First post, handle old Hazet ratchet.

Hi all fellow tool nuts out there!

First post from a Norwegian memeber, works as an professional car mechanic now with electronics as an speciality, has worked on heavy construction equipment (Cat and Volvo) and 13 years as an electronics technician/fault diagnosis on component level.

So to my question, have an old Hazet ratchet exactly like the one pictured below, but with a worn out handle. The rubber has gone all hard, and cracked. I have a kind of sentimental feeling for the ratchet, i found it in a trash container (?) for 15 years ago and after some service on the ratchet mechanism it works like new. Is it possible to order a new handle from somewhere? I have asked my lokal Hazet sales rep. but he claimes that there is not available. I have found spare parts for the ratchet mechanism, but not the handle.

Any ideas? Or will a newer model handle fit?

Hii and welcome to the GJ.

Somewhere there is a old post showing how many of our GJ members made their own handles for their ratchets. perhaps if you can find a favorite screwdriver handle you could substitute it for your old rubber handle. Or make your own handle on a metal lathe,or wood lathe.

If you wanted to reproduce the original in a better, new or different material; you could make a mold of the old one! Could be a fun little project! You could sell them to other Hazet tool collectors!

Before going through all that work; I would contact Hazet directly, who knows... maybe they have some old new old stock handles deep in the stock room in Germany somewhere!

Dimmur, keep us posted on this project; did you contact Hazet? Do you think a newer handle that Hazet has now for the same ratchet would fit? Let us know; I'm sure others have old Hazet ratchets they need handles for as well.

The modern version of the plastic grip is available from Hazet dealers:

It will fit your ratchet, but it won't look the same:

I got the older black handle grip from Spaenaur in Canada:

But the original old rubber one like yours, I doubt you could find... Maybe on a dusty old shelf at your Hazet dealer's???

I sell Hazet to Norway, but I can only get you the new handle and I seriously doubt that Hazet has the old old old version in stock. I live more or less enxt door to Hazet and I know about their policy how to handle these old spare parts (just as about all German makers of anything).

I just replaced the handle grip on my 916SP.

Just soak it in boiling hot water for a minute, Put an extension on the ratchet for leverage and twist. It will come free intact and without much trouble.

To put the new one on, no soap is needed. Just heat the new grip in hot water and press on. The last few cm will need a whack by a rubber mallet. When it cools, it is tight.
