First Project - Welding Table

I took a welding course this past fall (Adult Ed at a local Voc Tech School) and started on my first project there, a welding table. The table is based on the plans on the Miller web site, but my table is smaller I changed a few things and added others. Most of the changes based on things I saw here. I ran out of materials before I could finish the table and put together a rack for scrap metal with the remainder of the class.

This winter I picked up a 3/8" plate for the Top from a salvage yard. A great classmate from the welding class hooked me up with a friend of his who cuts steel with a water jet machine. He cut the plate square and cut out the removable piece that covers the cutting bin (along with the finger holes for removing it). So grateful. Makes it so much nicer.

I started to finish it using my old AC-225 Stick Welder but it was not working out very well. Most of the welding in class I did was Mig welding and my lack of skill and practice at Stick welding was showing.

This weekend I bought a Millermatic 211 after a long time considering what make and model to buy. What a difference, what a great welder.

I "completed" the table this weekend. A lot of fun. I keep thinking of changes, so it really isn't done, but it is done "enough"

The Vise, Grinder and "Anvilish Thing" are all removable, using trailer receiver tubes.

My next project is a cart for my new welder.

Cheers!

Jim

that looks good.....Is that a kobalt welding helmet? how dose it work, do you like it?

Thanks. That is a Kobalt Welding Helmet. I do like it. It has adjustable sensitivity and adjustable shade. Works well. I have not tried a Miller or Lincoln Helmet, not sure how different they would be. When I bought the Kobalt it was around $100.

Cheers!

I like the table. Is that a water table on the end for plasma cutter? If so do you have anymore pictures of it?

Great looking table. Well thought out.

You do know that the $1 in quarters you put in at the hand carwash was only for the use of the vacuum, right? You weren't supposed to take it home. :lol_hitti

This comment made me laugh out loud. A coworker gave me that car vacuum this winter. His family had a car wash and closed it a few years ago. I am excited to mount it outside my garage. Just waiting for it to be a bit warmer here before doing it.

Cheers!

All that is is a drawer/bin bent out of sheet metal, under a metal grate (To allow me to cut over it and catch the droppings in something). The Miller plans called for a much larger cutting bin with a drawer at the bottom to empty and vent hole for fumes. I opted to simplify it greatly, figured I could always make the more complex bin later if I decide it is worth it. The smaller drawer also gives me more room under the table for storage.

As it is right now I do not own a cutting torch or a plasma cutter. Trying to figure out the best thing to buy, looking out for deals, so no urgent need now.

Cheers!

Livley; no that is a complete running car. It replaces the altered that we wrecked 3 years ago.
It is a 1927 T roadster that should run Super Gas one day.

I like the table a lot, especially the trailer receiver tubes. I want to incorporate that into my table when I build one.

I can't seem to stop working on this welding table. I got tired of trying to drag multiple extensions cords across the garage to the table. I mounted a few boxes, strung them together with conduit and added a flex cord with plug. So now I basically have a few outlets acting like a power strip. Makes things much easier. I keep the bench grinder mounted most of the time and I can just keep it plugged in now. It seemed like it was always unplugged when I went to use it. I also added a bracket to wrap the flex cord around when the table is not plugged in.

Cheers!

I added another interchangeable item to the welding table. I bought a compact metal bender from Harbor Freight and bought one of the Harbor Freight hitch mount vise plates and mounted the Bender to the hitch mount vise plate. Now I can interchange it with the bench grinder. Looks like this will work very well.

Whichever I am not using (or both) I can just place on the shelf under the table. I mounted the Bench Grinder to the same hitch mount vise plate, but I had to weld some "wings" on the sides of it to make it wide enough to accommodate the base of the grinder.

Cheers!
