Just wanted to show what Im working with, took some better pictures....Put up some peg board over the work bench, going to be painted eventually...

Space up top, currently filled with bags of insulation. Going to frame up attic space and cross vent to all me to insulate. Plan is to take those boards off to open up the head room.

Another shot to show the height of the garage...

Some peg board hung and framed up to finish it off a bit, also going to put a shelf right above for some storage...

Hey guys I have a question...

DSC_0807_zpskj9jidbe.jpg

This is my garage currently, I would like to begin insulating and understand im going to need to vent. I am planning on putting collar ties across about 2-3 feet below the peak. essentially building an "attic space" then cross venting with gable vents.

Am I OK with installing rafter vents, venting from this "attic space" and down the ceiling without soffit vents? The way the garage was built it currently does not have any soffit vents and are impossible to put in without removing the roof lol.

I'm not a pro at insulating but I did insulate my garage. I put R13 fiberglass in the walls and R19 in the ceiling. I also added a power vent to the gable end. I can maintain a 20-degree inside/outside differential with a 12,000 btu wall-mounted window A/C unit.

You could insulate the outside wall with furring and rigid foam insulation but the roof isn't as simple. If you don't have a way to get air flowing from the base of the rafters, there won't be much heat flow up to the peak. I always thought you needed the air flow but all the spray foam insulating I've seen in Florida goes directly on the roof sheathing.

From the picture of the outside of your garage, you don't actually have soffits (can't tell if the mud room does). You might be able to install venting under the gutter on the fascia board. A continuous slot might be possible or at a minimum these small round vents:

hey thanks for the reply! I will have to get some pictures of how the garage was built, but the base of the roof is sitting directly on 2 stacked horizontal 2x 4's which are sitting right on the cement blocks. I don't think I will be able to add soffit vents.

Like I had mentioned, I am going to add a small "Attic space" and vent via gable vents but yes your right I cannot get airflow up from the base of the rafters. I guess ventilation might help? This is a tough one...

I don't think ventilation for the roof is absolutely necessary because I've never seen it required in stick frame walls. What is required is a vapor barrier on the heated side of the insulation. If you put a continuous Visqueen sheet over the insulation before you sheetrock, it should be fine.

Space is looking nice! Another dubber here as well, just sold my 2002 Jetta wagon that I had for 8 years because I picked up a super minty 2004 1.8T Jetta last fall for cheap.

I should really start up a house/garage thread with all we have done. Pegboard in your space looks great! Going to copy that idea to place it under my tire rack and above my workbench.
