Hey Everyone,

I have been browsing these forums for a while gathering quite the inspiration and ideas! I am a first time homeowner and while working outside got old real quick, I made sure this home came with some type of shelter to work in! Im an avid auto enthusiast and the family mechanic, (the whole family):eyecrazy:.

Now that the remodeling in the house is winding down (sort of) im starting to concentrate on our mudroom and garage. Mudroom is approx. an 9' x 10' area and the garage is a single stall 12' x 24' cement block walled.

First things first is to insulate the garage/mudroom and add an electrical sub panel. I've looked into rigid foam board and then sheet rock, although im having an energy audit done on the house and may have them foam fill everything. Look forward to everyones input and feedback.

From Outside Mudroom and Garage

Inside Cluttered 8x10 Mudroom, Notice the window on the left behind the ladder. Seems that the mudroom and garage were added later as an addition. Pretty cool since its a straight through into the kitchen, like a drive through when i want a beer or food when the fiances cooking.

Mudroom originally had old drop ceiling tiles, those were removed along with the ferring strips going to build to beams across and cathedral the ceiling.

Inside the cluttered garage :eyecrazy:

Peak of the rear of garage, garage will be tight width wise so im going to be utilizing alot of the height.

A door used as shelving in the garage, PO wasted nothing lol
IMAG0797_zps8b4d8888.jpg

Opening goes straight through into the mudroom, this will obviously all be closed later.
IMAG0789_zps27c91cae.jpg

The last of the old wires in this house, cant wait to pull them and run the new sub panel and eletrical. Plan is for the sub panel to run the mudroom and the garage circuits.

That is a real great space. I would be driving myself crazy as just how I wanted to utilize it. I love the outside as well. I am very interested in how this comes out!!

Thanks for posting and I will be following.

I have a question guys,

As said above there was orignally a drop ceiling in the mudroom. I removed all the ferring strips (except the those last 3) and all that is left are the 6 collar joints. My idea was to take the 3 collar joints and stack them on the outside edges. There will be pretty much 2 maint beams running along the sides as support. Can this be done without there being any damage to the integrity of the roof and walls? Ill get some better pictures this evening.

Heres another picture, you can see the outer collar joint against the wall and the one to the left of it are 16" and then the next is a 24". Question is can I remove the third and fourth and add them next too the first and second collars? Kind of hard to explain...

Hey thanks, do you have any picstures of the current home layout that we could possibly take a peek at? Its difficult to really judge without seeing some sort of pictures of the plot or anything. I would prb start your own build thread and post some current pictures of your land :)

So after some thought and research, going to be putting up a ridge beam in the mudroom for extra support. Either making my own or just grabbing an LVL. Either way i can then remove the collar ties without any worries. Pretty excited about the vaulted ceiling!

Thanks for the "heads up" :) The height that your seeing will actually be opened up eventually, Previous owner just threw down those pieces of random lumber over the collar ties for some storage above. Im going to eventually do the same as in the mudroom, The collar ties are going to be removed and a large lvl beam will be installed and it will open the low ceiling right up. Floor to peak is actually over 15' in here! Those last few pics are of the mudroom not the garage just wanted to clarify.

Small update, added another Joist and collar tie to match the other side since everything will be boxed in and sheetrocked. Had to be done or id have a 16" wide "beam" on one side and a wider 24" on the other. Now that both sides match, the main ridge beam is going to be comprised of 3/4" ply sandwhiched by a 2x6 and a 2x8 all truss-lok'ed together. You can see when it was built the difference in angles, hence the 2x6 and 2x8 beam

Some progress over the weekend. Got the beam in the mudroom in place and supported, ans took the center colar ties out. Looks nice and open now. Sub panel in the garage is in place and wired up with the 6/3. Next up is too reconnect the power to the garage temporarily and start roughing in the wiring for the mudroom.

Beam up in the mudroom...

Had to make a mess of things again for now...

Previous owner had those racks screwed into rigid board insulation that was glued to the cement block....Not safe...Tried scraping the adhesive off with no luck...

Finally got the panel wired up at the main this weekend, and ran a 220 line for the electric heater...Started a thread in the electrical and lighting forums having trouble determining if this panel is an 8 circuit or 6. looks like the bottom stabs on the left are either modified or do not exist . Weirdd :dunno:

looks like you're making some good progress. I look forward to seeing what organizing ideas you have to maximize your space. My shop is a similar size and it is getting tight quickly as I add more and more.

Hey Ainsley, definitely trying! Trying to finally get my lighting in the garage. We have been remodeling the house at the same time, so i've been back and forth between the house, mudroom, and garage. What are you using the shop for mainly? For starters those steel racks that I have are going to be tossed, going to try and get everything off the floors as much as possible. I have some good height in the garage which helps.

Got a little surprise from my uncle last night, its an Eaton 30 Position 40 Circuit Box :rocker: Going to be using this as the Main service in the house, then going to replace the small 6 position sub panel in the garage with the original house service box. Cant wait! Current box is wayyy too crammed.

I did all my house renovations first because I needed to get moved in. Took a break for a couple months and then got into the garage.
I'm going to be using my shop for mostly small projects but I'd like to start building cabinets and eventually do all new cabinets in my kitchen... might need a more serious table saw for that though.
I'm doing two 10' long shelves along each side of my shop hanging from the ceiling. I designed them around Rubbermaid totes so I'm hoping that gives me plenty of material storage. I have two office style cabinets from my old shop that I keep locks on for all my power tools; those are going along the back wall.
Are you planning a work bench at the moment?

Good stuff, Ill keep an eye out on your thread! Not sure if I will be building or buying a work bench yet, leaning more towards making one since I can build the storage how I like. it will be going in the back left corner of the garage and will most likely build it so I can tuck the tool box underneath. That will open up a good amount of space where it currently sits. That fridge on the white box is also already gone.

Did some work inside last night after running some wires for the garage lights. Sprayed the ugly brass fireplace surround and did some tiling.

Nice work. You are going to be very happy that you took care of all the basic "bones" sooner vs. later. I just insulated the garage walls in our old house / rental property after living there for 12 years. :(

Just a thought re: the adhesive on the garage wall - I would try a heat gun & putty knife. If that doesn't cut it, hit it with a grinder. Either way, it is going to stink in more ways than one.

Thanks for the post Huxley, I'll give the heat gun a shot see what it does. I'm going to be painting/waterproofing the cement block so it'll be nice to have the adhesive off the wall.

I really have to get my good camera out instead of these phone shots but, here's a quickie of the space with some lights finally! Going to Add 1 more 4' right down the middle. I have a 4' trougher in the back, and then the 2 double 4' on the sides right now...

Engine bay looks uber clean, nice work. Looks like you really spent some time tucking and deleting.

Thanks! Yeah definitely most of the time went into the shave. Forgot to mention i did a 6 speed swap last summer. I have plans to do some hardlines in the engine bay soon after i finish up the upholstery. Any plans for yours coming up?

Looking good!!! looks like it's going to be a great use of space!

I will try for sure! Alot of those shelves and stuff will be gone and off the floor soon hopefully! We aren't in the house yet as I've been kind of jumping between working on the garage/mudroom and the house.

6 speed was a good plan. My discretionary budget had moved to my garage and will most likely move to more house stuff this spring. That said i do still want to get on with a big turbo upgrade, but i want OEM reliability as my car has been great since day one. Last spring i had been planning on doing a big brake conversion, although it already has the Audi TT set-up, but the package i was planning on going with was out of stock for about 6 months! All this to say as of now nothing is definitive :)

I know how that goes! I actually daily the car in the summer, have been for about 3 years now with the turbo. Knock on wood it has been great, just have to keep an eye on things a bit more closely. I also don't drive like a maniac redlining the thing all over the place  The important thing is to upgrade the rods as its the weak point in these 1.8's. The stock 6 speed ****** holds plenty of power so you'll be good on that :3gears:.

Some slow progress, Raft R Vents are up, wires ran and lights connected in the mudroom. Ended up using a 3-way occupancy switch/dimmer inside the mudroom to turn on when the door opens, as this is the main entrance we use.

Havnt updated in a while, still working inside the house. But finally got around to building my work bench. Thinking about making a corner bench and continuing it to the window.
