I was wondering what type of flashlights you use at work
How do you like it?
How long have you had it?

Im thinking of eventually picking up a MAG-charger or a Streamlight LED stringer

I am somewhat of a flashlight nut. I don't know every make, model, intensity, etc but I do know, I enjoy bright lights when the moment arises. I have three or four flashlights in my pickup at any one time.

None of which are cheap $5 flashlights either. I usually carry two (3D) Mags, one small (2-123A) Surefire, and a decent (2C) Rayovac....with that being said;

The Borealis, which can be found below will be my next flashlight. 1080 lumens in a Mag body, rechargeable, and great runtime for a light capable of that intensity.

http://www.blackbearflashlights.com/

The website is a bit cheesy, but LE agencies and plenty of others who depend on good flashlights will vouch for the flashlight. It is expensive, but rather comparable if you are shopping for an expensive Surefire, Streamlight, etc.

I'm not a flashlight nut, never paid more than about $20, and that includes a nice little Coast I no longer use much, and most recently a 3watt Maglite on clearance at Home Depot. What I use the most though are one of the freebie HF or a $7 clearance NexGen.

The Maglite is great, but too nice for me to bang around or leave in a toolbox. The NexGen is old, not as bright, but decently bright with a good spot and since I have two or three I keep one in my travel tools bag. I've got a dozen of the free HF LEDs, so they are often the handiest to use.

Hard to resist keeping looking for a better one though. Bang for the buck keeps getting better and better.

In my tool box;
Mini Mag AA, LED light from menards I got for Christmas.

On me;
Either a 2-D LED maglite or a 2AA Led maglite or both

At home;
3-D LED maglite, 2x AA mini-mags

The LED upgrade is very worth it for the larger maglites.

Pelican SabreLite 2000 -
Submersible, ,Xenon uses 3 C cells and is bright and long lived. It's also Class1 Div 1 approved, required by the safety gods on the job.
On/off with a twist of the lens cover, kind of a pain in the ***, my next light will be a Pelican model with a separate switch.

I carry a 4sevens Quark AA2 everywhere with me at work. Serious lighting and overall high quality flashlights. 4sevens.com if you are interested. For Canadians 4sevens.ca

stinger led with the tail cap switch and a piggy back charger with the extra battery. and get a car charger so you can take it home or on a trip with you. when your light is brighter than the cops it makes them real interested in your light and want to know where they can buy one if they do not already carry one.

Agreed with mrshaun. I love my Stinger LED. I carried a regular stinger for a year before I bought the LED, day and night difference.

Thhe link below is an example of a RayOVac Roughneck flashlight. Not LED, maybe even old school.
I purchased one of these with 3D cells probably 20 years ago when I had a Pinto that always broke down. I was so impressed with what the light went through that, over the last 2 decades, that's all I ever got. I now have the 2D cell flashlight in every car, 2 are rolling around in the garage, 1 in the basement, 1 in the kitchen tool drawer, the boy has 1 for camping, and I have 2 at work. I kinda like them because they have always worked perfectly and some of them have seen some HARD use.

Nice collection,, no doubt that your an avid CPF reader. :beer:

surefire led. Best flash light I have ever owned.
I have to agree....I am partial to SF for more reasons than one:bounce:

That mini-Mag looks like it has seen some use. :thumbup:

Out of all of those, what would you feel is the best light for the money?

The mini mag is actually, a 650nm/200mW laser. I used the minimag body as a host for my build. Before that, yes it saw lots of use in its former life. :thumbup: Actually in the pelican case in my picture in the above post.....every thing on the right hand side are actually lasers I have built.

Pictures of the minimag 200mW build......

As far as quality, IMO surefire cant be beat. But you asked "best light for the money"....As much as I hate to admit this, its has to be my Ultrafire WF-016. It is the flashlight in my pelican case, in the middle bottom with a silver bezel. I got it on dealextreme.com for $31.50! It does not have the quality my SF's do, but its not far off. Its built pretty damn well. Gives any of my Surefires that run on 123s (6P,9P,E2DL,A2 etc) a run for their money as far as beam brightness and quality! Nothing can compare for the price...Trust me I have quite a few flashlights and this subject, well...has a lot to do with how I make my living. :thumbup:

Specs on the Ultrafire WF-016

  • 380 lumens, nice pattern with little to no artifacts.

  • Uses a cree SSC-P7 emitter (LED).

  • It uses a single 18650 rechargeable.

  • Has a 5 mode tail clicky.

  • My real world experience it has around a 60 minute run-time on the brightest mode! Manufacturer states it has a 75 minute run time.

I have this exact setup and have been very pleased with it. Plus, you always have a spare battery charged up and ready to go.

Pelican flashlight. Get the one that uses 4 AA batteries and an on-off switch. Some have a twist the end on-off feature which is for divers and firemen wearing gloves.

I sailed in the merchant marine as an engineer for 30+ years and your flashlight is your life when things go dark. Pelican lights were in the engine room and also in the lifeboats.

Through the years flashlights in general have gotten better. It used to be that a Brightstar wth 2 D cells was the thing to have...the model suitable for explosive vapors. Then we started using a grey rubber casing Ray-o-Vac with the D cells and then the model with the two C cells which was lighter and went into your back pocket easier. The C cell model was discontinued or at least the purchasing dept. coudn't get them anymore from Grainger. Last I knew you could still get the D cell model and would recommend it after Pelican.

I have owned some Mag lights but never used them professionally. They are metal and I only want a non conductive flashlight casing.

Also when I worked on gasoline tankers a mag light would not be allowed on deck...droping it could mean sparks and it's bye-bye everybody. :wtf:

Originally it was a o-like 200mW/650nm. Lasted about a year. Diode crapped out. So I tore it apart, threw in a drlava driver and a GGW-H20L 405nm diode. freaking rocks now. :thumbup:

I've had my SureFire C2 Centurion for more than seven years. I cannot say enough good things about the quality of my light and the exceptional customer service at SureFire. I like it so much that when I saw one on sale for 30% off, I bought it just to have it in reserve.

Glad you like your C2. It looks like it has served you well! I like the battle scars. I have a few SFs like that also. I also have a favorite...so much that I have a few reserve also. :thumbup:

mkdive, so on that Ultrafire WF-016, how do the different "modes" work. Do you click it once for low, twice for medium, etc.?

were on a farm and the work never stops so were always usally flashlights

i recomend a streamlight polystinger with 2 extra batteries

if you can afford it a streamlight HID lightbox we have a few and there 500 bucks but if you do alot of work with a flashlights and need to see far distance there worth it

i would also suggest the firevulican as a mid range light

but stramlight is the only breand i recomend

spend a few more dollars but get a quailty light

You fully click once for "on" then lightly depress tail clicky for the different modes. Then fully click for "off".

Modes:
Click full = ON (full output)
Light depress 1 = (med output)
Light depress 2= (low output)
Light depress 3= (fast strobe)
Light depress 4= (slow flash in SOS pattern).
Click full = Off
