Flat Workshop/Garage ceiling insulation How-To???

Hello:

I have been reading and searching around on what's the proper ways to insulate my flat roof garage. It's currently has no insulation as I'm located in the Boston area. Therefore, it gets pretty cold up here during the winter time.

I'm currently confused on what's the cheapest way to insulate the roof so the garage would get too cold to work in during the winter time. Here's a little detail on my garage roof:

1). The garage is 1000 sq-ft and it's flat root
2). The rafters are 2"x10" and 1 and a half feet across
3). I believe the roof I have is called, "Cold Roof" where roof covering -->wood panel -->rafters. Pretty simple construction.

My ideal is to seal off all the cracks at the edge of the roof with hand spray foam of course from the inside of the garage. Then staple Owens Corning Raft-R-Mate Attic Vent to give some cavity ventilation space between the R30 and the roof wood panel, then cover it with Silvertanium Reflective Attic Insulation Roll as a vapor barrier or I can add some of the rigid insulation panels to add more R values right underneath the fiberglass insulation.

Would this idea be ok and wouldn't trap mold and other moisture in the ceiling? If not, what other ways I can do this?

Maybe perhaps I should add few pictures of my roof here so I can show you all what my current roof looks like and how to tackle this project?

Thank you all for your input.

spray foam

Hi, Thanks for the reply. I have thought about using spray foam and I think it's a bit expensive? Also, if I were to use spray foam, I can just spray it directly to the surface of the roof interior side and wouldnt need to worry about moisture being build up and riot the wood?

Once I spray foam it, would I still need to put up a vapor barrier after the foam or can I use the insulation foam panel to act as a ceiling?

Thanks,

most spray foams are a sealant in their own right. As long as your outer roofing is keeping water out, nothing will be getting between the foam and roof proper. watch some youtube vids on commercial foam application and you'll see what I mean.

For my own flat roof in mild dry SoCal, I just used kraft-faced R19. Haven't got around to putting up any proper barrier or foam board or drywall, yet.
