floor drain

hello , I will be building my shop soon, before i pour the concrete i wanted to install an floor drain. I found a trench drain at homedepot it is the plastic nds. Would the plastic be strong enough or should i find a metal one? I have had much luck finding a metal one. If anyone can give me a link, and or some pic that would be great...

First thing you need to do is find out if it is even legal in your area. Around here there are pretty much no floor drains allowed.

I used the NDS system in my shop,ran it wall to wall with a 4" line running out of each end.These go into a 55gal plastic drum (on each side),then I have 40' of 4" perf pipe laying in 2x2 drainrock trenches comming off of each one.There are 2 square floor drains also,one in my machine shop and one in the bathroom floor that are hooked to the system,and 2 utility sinks. The drums act as separaters and are the type with removeable heads for cleaning. The actual code in mi says you can only do this if the drainfield is within the footing,but since I have 3500 sq ft, that was not a problem.Anyway,the NDS stuff works great but requires a lot of time to "get right" before you pour. I built the whole drain system up on 2x10 reated that was set down first with the fall going 1/4"-4' each way.we then covered it all with good ole duck tape and poured the concrete.I'll find some pics and put them up tonight.

NDS from Lowe's, works great for me. A section in front of each door.

Used 1.5 inch pvc for mine. Wish I had of used bigger pipe, as every once in a while it clogs. No problems other than that, and it is infrequent.

If anything heavy or with a high p.s.i. will be rolling over the drain, consider something like Polydrain made by ABT. More money, but way stronger. It's a polymer-modified cementitious material with a choice of various heavy duty grates. It has fall built in so water flows to the outlet.

Any plumbing wholesaler that deals in Wade,J.R. Smith or Zurn products can order similar items for you,they won't be cheap.
