Floor joist blocking - code surrounding boring

Does anyone know which code section to refer to regarding boring holes in blocking between floor joists? I have 2x10 floor joists and need to cut a 6 1/4" hole for a range hood duct in order to vent this to the outside.

If the blocking is just to prevent joist rotation, you're fine, in fact you could replace the block with a flat 2x4 at the top and bottom of the joist bay. If the blocking is transferring point load weight from above...that's a different story.

Thank you for your response. It is certainly to prevent joist rotation. There is no point load above. Do you know if there is a section of the code that addresses this scenario?

Thanks

The blocking that the code is concerned about is for fire ......

If this is a new house you will have the plates -- an inspector will want to see fire stop foam around any hole in the plate.

The other blocking -- have never seen an inspector say anything about it.

Nothing in the code relating to 'mid-span blocking' which is to prevent rotation. Simpson makes metal 'X' bracing for the same purpose, so take that for what it's worth.

Look at IBC 2308.4.6, which provides lateral support requirements for floor and ceiling framing. Lots of ways to provide support when needed.

Having just seen this done, here range vents have a fire blocking requirement (no cite) - we had to be more than 1/4 off the wood... If you think about it, these can contain a grease fire... Note sure if it's the same there.

Not trying to make it harder - I'd cut blocking all day long to pass a vent through it, it's not structural and how else you going to run vent along joist...

There is no “code requirement” for this particular scenario. The best thing to do is just remove it. I certainly wouldn’t expend energy/time to bore/cut hole in blocking- especially just one, in a single joist bay.
