Pyro: can you post a few pictures of a few of your old tools? so you'll know how to post pictures and so we can see more cool old tools.

ask questions if you have any and we'll try to help if we see it.

good luck and welcome

Define "old" most of my hand tools are at least 20 yrs old. But some inherited tools...
most of my shop equipment is homemade so quess they are fairly new.

Pyro: you can post pictures of any tools you like and homemade ones sound interesting. when i say old what i probably really mean is quality so if you have any pictures to post please do to add a little color to your thread.

cheers

Pyro: nice job posting pictures. it looks like you have a nice old project truck in your garage. i do like those old style trucks from the late 40's and do tell what it is if you wish to share. cool little grinder too.

can i mention that you should either turn the bolt over when you mount your vise if you can your use that nice old hack saw to trim the bolt because it looks like it will grab a finger or a hunk of skin sitting there under the swivel pin.

again welcome and ask questions if you have any and we'll try to help.

I just bolted that vise up the other day. But left the bolts long as I'm about to redo bench top. Once finished they will get finished with acorn nuts.

The truck is a 47 IHC kb-1 its a long term project. But hope to put back in rotation by Christmas.
I'm 36, married, 4 kids. I'm an electrician, firefighter, shadetree mechanic, apprenticed blacksmith.
I am interested in the "old school" methods and techniques. I feel that there is a huge skills gap forming in modern society. No one young is willing to learn, so no one experienced is teaching.
well I'M willing to learn! I have won countless beer bets by challenging some hot shot I can weld aluminum with OA better than they can with a tig.
That's cause I made friends with a retired aircraft mechanic in his 80's who was kind enough to share his trade. That's why I love the Internet and forums like this. It is by far the best use of technology, to bring experienced professionals and " been there, done that " guys who know better from a life time of trial and error. To a place where they can share their life experience with young kids and wannabes.
If they only make your weekend project a little easier its still worth it.
I also believe in the mantra " right tool for the job" that's probably why I have more tools than space to store them!

Pyro: great post and you will be a great asset to others and to this forum. Happy to have another quality member join our group.

as a whole the younger generation doesn't want to learn or do handyman type skills and maybe a part of that is because all the lawyers and the government took away basic shop classes from public schools. so the kids had nowhere to get started if their parent or a friends weren't talented enough to teach them.

there are plenty of teenagers on this forum though that have plenty of skills so you (we) can have the belief that the younger and older generation like me want to still learn. if there is good knowledge to share give willingly and let them decide if it's something they can use or do.

i usually hang in the old tools sections, but i also like watching the guys do some amazing things in the garage gallery.

enjoy the reading and hope to see a few of your posts.

welcome and ask questions if you need some help with the forum or on a thread you are reading.

BTW i totaled a 66 IH pickup in my youth running it off a road and down a small hill and came out with a black eye and a sore knee without a safety belt. i broke the steering wheel in half with my arms and didn't hurt my chest because that truck was built like a tank. so your older one might even be nicer when you get it running again.

Yeah my neighbors are all like " you shouldn't set things on your hot rod! You'll warp the metal" I just laugh and tell them I've used it as a step stool! They real don't make em like that any more.

Pyro: i don't expect you to know much about this truck i bought, but i just started a new thread about it. Talk about stout old trucks. it's a Ford F800 18 foot flatbed and i know very little about commercial old trucks. click on the link in my signature if you have anything to post or if you just want to see some pictures. or i'll post a few on your thread to add some color if you don't mind.

good luck and like i mentioned enjoy the reading because lots to learn here and teach us or ask questions when you wish.

cheers
