I know Curtis compressors are good quality, I was just wondering if $600 was a fair price. Its a 80 gal, 220 single phase motor. Looks like a single stage compressor. Any thing I should check out specifically? I assume its somewhere I can plug it in and see how it runs.

Thanks for any help or advice.
Kris.

If it is single stage, it may be a HVAC or fire system compressor for building systems. Need to determine the max pressure, hp, and whether it is single or two stage (two cyls the same size, or one larger than the other)

not always single stage means more volume of air just at a little less pressure. Being most airtools only run at 90psi i personaly dont see how it will matter much as long as it makes that 90 psi or a bit more.

Anything used is worth 1/2 as much as new depending on what shape it is in.

Pretty sure its not a HVAC or Fire system compressor. Not sure what you could possible gleam from these pictures but ask and you shall receive.

FWIW, mine is a 1966 model and I scooped it up for 200 bucks. I think 6 is pretty steep. For that it should at least be a 2 stage unit IMO

KrisKustomPaint - this is what a 2 stage looks like / notice one cylinder is much larger in diameter.

Judging by your user name - I will say, for body work, a 2-stage will put out cooler & drier air / plus >CFM.
- I paid $750 for my 6HP 2-Stage compressor (175 psi max.) with Sharpe Air Drier + 3 brand name used paint guns
- still better than a new $999 2-stage, from TSC / that over-rev. at 3600 RPM (old ones at @1740 RPM and go forever)

1-stage value - quarter to half price, of a 2-stage model (rough estimate) / looks like a decent unit, your considering.

Test a used compressor volume - by hooking up a 6" D/A sander to an air line and trigger it wide open, to see how the CFM keeps up / if only adequate (have to wait for the tank to refill) - ongoing sandblasting would also be limited.

I work for the Postal Service and we have a Curtis at work. 2-stage, horizontal 120 gal tank, 15 hp with a top of the line air dryer. It's 3 phase though. Dang thing has been sitting in the boiler room for 7 years, brand new and never used! We fire it up a couple times a year just to make sure it runs. U.S. Government capital property, so we can't sell it. They're talking about closing our facility so I know what's gonna happen to it. The local metal salvage company is gonna get an awesome compressor, for free!

Much like the time a bigwig from Washington was coming to visit the plant. Maintenace manager ordered us to clean up the outside storage. 3 Yale forklifts in various states of disrepair. A few hundred dollars in parts would have had them all working. Nope, not enough time.........call the junkman! Basically, we have morons running the show. No wonder we were $8 billion in the whole last year!

This is what a Curtis two stage would look like,

Steve

So it may be a two stage then. I've seen other side by side cylinder compressors that were single stage, just wasn't sure if was two stage or not.

I don't really care to use it for sand blasting. Most of my tools are pretty low cfm consumption, my paint gun is 9.5 cfm.

It looks like a twin to mine, 5HP 80 gal D96. These are very well made compressors, they are also not too noisy.

Steve

Thats why I was looking for an older compressor. My friend has an old Saylor Beal that you can stand next to and have a conversation while its running. Another guy I know has one of those little stand up craftsman 17 gal or what ever they are. You can put it out side the shop and its still louder than I can stand.
