Is it a piece of ****?

I've seen pictures of similar presses in some of you guys' shops, so it can't be all bad. The pulley on top of the motor has a chuck out of it, so I'll need to replace it, there seems to be a slight bit of wobble in the center pulley, some idiot drilled into the table several different places, and the paint is cracking off (someone tried repainting the head without cleaning off the old paint first) But all in all it seemed solid and it spins. Holy **** it is a heavy s.o.b.... its about 42 inches tall over all. I think the motor is a 3/4 hp.

I paid $25 for it. Worthwhile as a tool, or expensive scrap?

Good get.

someone smack the guy that drilled all the holes in the table. At least he was sort of even in spreading them around.

Over on the OWWM/OMWM site, it's known as "the arc of shame."

Got to use the drill press today and I'm very happy with it. My wife even thinks it looks cool and keeps commenting on it! How cool is that?! :bounce:

One thing I have got to do is figure out some kind of switch to turn it on and off. Right now it just has a plug wired straight to the motor, so to turn it on or off I need to plug or unplug it which is a serious p.i.t.a. I fried the end of an extension cord today from doing this, the end was tight and the plug didn't want to go in right, had smoke rolling and a glowing plug in my hand for a second or so.

How should I go about making a switch for it? I have a new standard light switch laying around, will that work or should I do something different? I think one of those switches that have a red and green push buttons would be cool, but I couldn't find one at Lowes...

One more thing, the chuck key doesn't seem to be quite the right style for the chuck... it is about the right size, but the teeth don't fit together quite right so tightening a bit down is a little tough, and I occasionally made the bit stall because I couldn't get it tight enough. Any pointers? I don't think it is the original chuck but I really can't be sure, I'm still too much a newbie with tools to know all this stuff.

Walker-Turner is top shelf stuff. If its got no run out and you paid
25 for it you stole a keeper. I got a floor model last year and I love it.

That looks like the ones found in school shop classes.

For the switch, wire in a foot switch. It may save your hand or something one day.

Thanks, JASTECH

I have a floor standing unit that I bought last year for $75, I too had to rewire as someone along the lines wired it up with a lamp cord. The two holes on the left side above the spring housing are where the original switch was located. I bought a toggle switch, metal outlet box, and black faceplate to use as my new switch, I'll post a pic tomorrow.

i was going to get that, but when i factored in gas and travel time and my other presses, it was hard to justify. glad it went to someone here! even non working, the parts value alone would have made it worth the $25.00. you did well.

interesting that you mentioned the red and green button switch. they do show up on ebay from time to time, but i don't know of anyone selling a modern, ul listed, version. i emailed rockler about making one, but they weren't interested in at as a product. fools.

even though they look modern, perhaps that would work for the op. however, i was referring to the round style red and green push button switches - generally from the same era as the press. i've not seen those reproduced.

ohhhh, I know the ones you are talking of, my press has one on it, The green button has a metal shield around it to make it a little harder to press, while the red button doesnt

IF you want to make one like the original I have one like it. Mine is the floor model but it looks like the same one. From your photos you can even see the holes where the switch went. The original was just a square box that a toggle switch screwed into. Then it had two screws that went threw the box and screwed into the frame. You can get a parts manual at OWWM.org
Here is a picture to go by on mine. And yes you will love this thing the way it runs.

Hey WILLIE8436,
I like the looks of your shut-off switch and your machine, but it might even run better if you install a belt from the motor. Must be a child-proof feature.......TIM

It looks like he's using them new "Invisi-Belts", that OSHA is now requiring for workplace safety. It's designed to avoid injuries if someone accidently gets their hand (or tongue) caught in the drive mechanism.
