It certainly does look pretty damn beautiful! You may have already mentioned it but what type of insulation are you going with in the ceiling and walls?

I don't think I've mentioned insulation yet. I plan on getting blown cellulose up in the ceiling, and i'll be hanging 8' batts between the columns. Thanks for asking!

Love the drawings and clean electrical lines run.

All of my ideas seem to take form on a piece of engineering paper. Most of them end up in the garbage.... but hey, it keeps the creative juices flowing......

Nice looking shop. I like the way the post sit on the slab for a more traditional style building keeping the wood out of the ground. Interesting also with the tyvek wrap on the walls but not the ceiling? Is this there for a moisture barrier? Also just curious on what your trusses are spaced at. I know when I had my building bid out to numerous companies some went up to a 8 foot on center span. I am curious to how you will be finishing everything up inside since I hope to be doing the same think in the next upcoming months.

Thanks for checking out my build. The Tyvek wrap is acting as a moisture barrier. I’m hanging fiberglass bats between the posts now, so I wanted to ensure that no moisture could wick its way in from the tin seams. I opted out of putting any up on the ceiling, given the soffit and ridge vents. The continuous airflow should keep the moisture in the attic to a minimum. The posts are indeed 8’ on center. To address the large span, the roof perlins are installed vertically. As for finishing up the interior walls, I will be running 2x6 boards between the beams, much as they did for the exterior tin. Where my drywall and tin wainscoting meet, there will be a 2x10 in favor of the 2x6. This will serve as a backing for the two materials, as well as frame in my windows on the lower run.

It's been very busy past few weeks. The insulation is 80% hung, and the interior walls are now 80% run with planks for the interior finishing. We had our annual corn roast the other weekend, and needed some outdoor seating, so i made some tables for the occasion.

I originally ordered 12' sheets of tin from Menards at 27" wide. To my disappointment, the material was utter ****. Please do yourself a favor and avoid purchasing corrugated metal from any of the big box stores. The seams will not seal/overlap correctly, and it will come in significantly undersized in thickness. Thankfully, Menards allowed me to return the material.

I made a call to Corrugated Metals down in Illinois and had a custom run made and cut to size. 5 days later i loaded up the trailer and went for a drive. The material is absolutely fantastic, and the folks there are great to work with. Moral of the story: don't cheap out on building materials.

Here's the first two 44" sheets hung

One soffit light is hung. I'm hoping to have the rest up tomorrow. You can also see the gutters that were installed a few weeks back. I also just recieved the gooseneck lights for above the garage and service doors. My hope is to have them installed this weekend.

Glad to see some progress. I'll bet I'm not the only GJ member saying to himself, "D@mn, I wish he would finish the place so he can get back to restoring old machinery and updating his tools thread."

Thanks for checking in guys! Yes, the wait for getting this thing up and running is killing me too. Hopefully I'll be back at it this winter.

You're not kidding about the quality of the Menards metal. It's taking me forever to get the seems looking o.k., but they will never be perfect. I'm just hoping I don't look up often enough for it to bother me.

I really couldn't believe how poor the material they sold was. It was beyond being acceptable, so i wasn't about to settle for it. The thickness came in at .0105" (that's 3 sheets of paper). I was afraid that it would dent just by sneezing on it. Hopefully yours is better then the stuff i got, and best of luck on your tin hanging.

For those following, here's an update on the garage. I've been making slow but steady progress on things. The exterior lights are up, and the service has been run from the house to the garage. (I know the exposed Romex to the outlet is not to code, it is temporary.)

Today I had a friend come over and we knocked out half of the ceiling install. I also got 4 of the 24 lights up in place. It should be quite well lit. I'm happy with the light spread so far, no bright spots.

Light output from the 4, 85 watt CFLs so far.

Great project - I like your design and attention to detail! By the way, good choice in tractors (from your shots of barn interior). Is that a DC, or an SC? Like the signs on the interior wall too. I have a couple of original rectangular "Case Farm Machinery" metal signs from a couple of generations ago in my family I have on the interior of my barn. Keep up the good work. You might use a little flambeau red somewhere in that new fab shop . . . .

Hankoh, good eye on the tractor, a DC from 1953. It was my late grandfathers and it's a real privilege to own and operate. I will be going through it, and giving it some fresh paint in the not so distant future.

I'm quite jealous of your signs. They are highly sought after, and sadly I can't afford the high price they command. Flambeau red has certainly crossed my mind for some odds and ends in the garage. I'm sure it will be used somewhere!

Thanks for checking in guys. Hounddog, about the only collection I've got going so far is the tools that will fill the floor space.

Here's a shot from this weeks progress. 2 of the 4 rows of lights are up and work great! I was pleasantly surprised at how quick they come up to temperature/brightness with the cold weather we got. Also managed to get the wains coating and belt line trim on one side and back wall. If all goes well, I'll be moving things in on the first week of November.

I was able to get 9 sheets up tonight. It's about all i have room for to let dry, and the damn things take two coats. A bit of a setback, but it will have to do.

Your shop is looking fantastic. When you are all moved in and the winter winds are blowing.Which isn't to fare away. It will be a great feeling to know that you have reached your goal and now will start to enjoy it.
I have a Nephew that lives on Marsh Rd. near 45 and 10 are you anywhere near him?

I'm a fairly modest person, but even I am surprised with how well this is coming together. I spent a good deal of time researching nearly every aspect of the build, often running through the installation in my head and sketching up the specific task. It wont suit everybody's taste, but like Crown said, its an atmosphere that should be pleasant to work in.

Bootlegger, I know what you mean about old man winter moving in. I feel it looming over my shoulder, and it keeps me plugging away out there till 9 every night!. So far I think I'm pretty close to being on track for the Nov. 7th moving day.

Yea i know right where Marsh Rd is at. I'm a bit west of it over in the Fremont area, but I drive over Marsh every day going to work.

For those following, here is the progress so far. Thanks to the help of a few good friends, i was able to get things moved in last weekend. Its a bit disorganized right now, and there are no benches or wall cabinets. I've been spending most of my nights removing the rust and touching up all the equipment. There is still a ton of work ahead of me, but I'm grateful that all my stuff is under one roof and out of the elements.

This disconnect is for the compressor. I could have just as easily bought a new HU361 from Square D, but that's not really my style. A nice older unit cleaned up well and will serve me for many more years.

I will follow up with more photos later.
