Thank you all very much for the positive comments. They are an excellent motivator to keep me out there plugging away at things.

looking great! what do those two wheels in the lower left of the last pic belong to? don't believe I have seen those before. doing auto restorations now (again)?

jim

Jim,

That's the 3100 Chevy truck I'm putting together. I started a thread on it a while back, but there isn't too much on it. It's pretty much the reason for me buying and restoring all the equipment. Truth be told, i haven't touched it in 2 years with moving and now putting up the shop. As soon as I'm finished with the details on the shop, and my bank account recovers, I plan on getting back to it.

Tease.

How much later? Some of us are REALLY bored at work! [emoji14]

Haha, well I intended on getting some shots this weekend, but it was an exceptionally busy one. I did however manage to get 80 bales of insulation blown in the attic. Nothing too exciting, but it will be great for this winter! I will do my best to get some more photos posted tonight!

As requested, some additional photos.

Here we are painting the panels. I thought this would never come to an end, but thankfully it did. I couldn't imagine putting up sheetrock, mudding, sanding, priming, and then painting this much wall.

Being that I am about the furthest thing from a wood worker, I was pretty satisfied with how the trim work turned out. Props go to the Milwaukee miter saw.

I've got my sled and a buddies (my old one) in for some service work. Hoping for some snow this winter, but its not looking promising.

The east wall. Still not certain on equipment placement, but this is close. The plan is to have a South Bend 16" lathe facing opposite the 9" at some point where the blue sled sits.

Areal view. I've also got a 4x4 in for some service work. Feels good to be putting the new place to use.

West wall. The saw will not be against the wall, but i need to make my metal rack before i place it out in the open floor. I spent a honest hour polishing up the welder. It was long overdue, especially after sitting in the barn for 8 months.

Been following for a while. Fantastic build, and a great looking shop. I might have missed it, but what are your plans for heat...if any? Don't think there was any radiant in your slab. Wood burner, or?

Must be great to have it together and usable. Congrats!

Can't wait til you get back to machine restorations:beer:

Hopefully I don't need to restore to many more! I still need to make a 4' blast cabinet, and would like to pick up a larger lathe. Perhaps a metal shaper at some point, just for the novelty of it. The mill needs a lot of love, though I'm not really looking forward to it.

It certainly does feel great to have it completed to this point. Ample lighting, and a draft free building are a welcome change. I might not have said it before, but I plan on doing radiant heat tubes for winter comfort. They will need to wait until next fall due to their high cost. For temporary "heat" this winter, i will be picking up 1 or 2 small electric IR heaters for local heating.

I don't know why but instead of wanting to give you a hard time for being a tool polisher I have an urge to go out to my shop and polish the welders...

Haha, no worries if you did give me a hard time, it get it often from my buddies. In my defense though, that was likely the first time it's ever been shined up since it was new.

Just caught up on this thread and think the last time I saw it was during the demo of the old garage. Nice work and your attention to detail is amazing.

I have the exact same Tig & a MM210, they both look new even though they are at least 7 or 8 years old. They get used & dusted/polished

yaidunno - very nice shop. I am interested how you did the metal panel walls trimmed out in wood with the paneling above. Do you use and J- channel at the bottom or any thing on the top? A close up picture or explanation on how its hung there would be great. I have a 12'6" ceiling and trying to figure out how to finish out the walls.

Thanks much for the interest and comments everyone!

Just curious on what bulbs are you using in those ceiling lights?

The bulbs are an 85 Watt CFL in a 4100k color. I've got 24 of them in there, and the light output is really great. I took a shot in the dark on the wattage and amount of lights, and couldn't be happier with how it turned out.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who keeps the welders clean!

I started out at the ceiling, and went around the perimeter with J trim. After that, I hung all my sheets up there. After purchasing my Smartside panels, I took note of their length. They all came in at 8', +/- 1/8". With that in mind, I put up my belt height trim (1x4) around the building. The sheets were set on the top of the trim, and there was 1/8"-1/4" gap up top between the J trim and the sheet. That gap was hidden with the 1x2 crown trim. Down below, the tin sheets were butted up against the bottom of the belt line trim. Finally, the base board 1x2 trim was put on the bottom of the tin. The thickness of all the materials is what makes it work well. The tin is only 1/2" in height, and the panels were 3/8". Being that the trim boards are all 3/4", they stand proud of both the panel and tin. Hopefully that gives you an idea of how I went about it.

Really good looking and well constructed garage/shop. Now that it is up and ready what kind of fabricating will you be doing?

Thanks much. I plan on focusing on automotive related projects, but really don't plan on limiting myself to one specific thing.

Awesome place and machines! Look at all that extra floor space. What ever will you do with it? ;)

When's the lift going in?

Eh, I keep my blues brothers polished up as well. Now the baby red, just looks neglected, but he came to me after leading an already full life.

The extra floor space will be filling up soon I'm afraid. A 4'x8' fab table is in the works, and a 4' blast cabinet will soon follow once i have a suitable work surface to build it on. Along the back wall will be a 10'x2' work bench with Lista cabinets and overhead storage.

I'm still not sure i even want a lift to be honest. I've spent many of hour underneath one working on vehicles, and I certainly appreciate them for what they are, but don't have much desire to put one in. I'm guessing I should be banished to the corner for speaking such blasphemy.

Thanks for checking in!

Great build, the attention to detail is second to none. I got to stop find these great threads. I'm still about 3 weeks out until I can get home to start finishing my interior.

One question, is there a reason you didn't insulate the ceiling, or did I over look that part.

I did end up insulating the ceiling. Perhaps i forgot to mention that in my ramblings? There's about 10" of blown in celulose up in the attic now.

Thank you for the reply, I have sometime to consider my options. Being that my scissor trusses are 48"OC, Im looking for the lightest application possible.

Well, I posted this up briefly in the other thread i have going, but figured it was a large enough addition to the shop to warrant an update.

I got the sign that i started a few years back finished up and hung. I've also got the electrical runs on the west and south walls complete (not shown).

Thanks a lot guys!

Tunajoe, the goofy birds came with the farm when I bought it the place. They are wild for the most part, and are self sufficient for 9 months out of the year. Once the ground is covered with snow, they get fed cracked corn. They stick around though, only venturing to the neighbors houses in search of food.

MAN, you have come a LONG ways since I last stopped in back in May. Couldn't believe it was the same thread I had started following and left off with demoing of the old shed. You've done an awesome job and in a short amount of time relatively speaking. Relative to MY dang build which is taking forever. Love the brightness and open space and all the great old equipment and machines. You did good yano!!
Curious and pardon me if I missed it, but where did you get all the light shades, the ones you painted green. I'm looking for some, cheap...

Lamar, thanks for checking things out, and the kind words! I did my best to get things buttoned up before winter came, and I was indeed successful. There was a fair share of long nights, but it was well worth it.

The lights were purchased at Menard's under the "Patriot" brand. They were cheap, relatively speaking. I got them for $34 each. I now see they bumped the price up to $42. Northern tool also has them for $37. Used ones seemed to go for, at minimum, $75 each and Barnyard Electric ones start at $175. With 24 of them to buy, I too was after an affordable solution. Their quality is acceptable, and reflects the price.

There's certainly no shame in the progress you've been making! Your buildings are hand crafted works of art that understandably should take time.

Love the choice of outside color and the ceiling/light combo.

What do you mean by auto restoration? As a hobby/for friends or doing it for a living? What kind of cars/trucks are you interested in?

Thanks JB. I hope that the building will serve my needs for many years to come.

Thanks onemanarmy. If your referring to my business plan, It will be targeted towards automotive/motorcycle fabrication and restoration. It would, at least initially, be an after hours and weekend affair. Should it take off, I would love to make it full time, assuming it makes ends meet. I'm interested in cars/truck that are pre '65. I have a good appreciation for most all makes/models.

As Red kindly pointed out, there is a photo showing the painting of the shades a few pages back. It was very time consuming taking the lights apart and putting them back together. The color is an Oliver green from Fleet Farm.

Thanks for sharing Bryan!

Awesome build! Can't wait to see what you do next

Thanks for checking things out red! As for whats next, I'm in the process of getting the mill operational, and making a 48" blast cabinet. I will be documenting those items in my other thread, in an effort to keep this one more garage related.

Here's a small, but important update. I was able to get the remainder of the electrical runs put up. This includes the 240V for the mill, drill press, and shear. I had to upgrade the VFD on the drill press to a 240V unit to avoid a nuisance GFI trip. There's just one final run that needs to go from the panel to the area between the garage doors for a retractable cord, but that will wait until a later date. On with the photos.

Wow, super nice shop.
What kind of insulation arrangement did you use in your walls? I don't see any extra framing where you hung those batts? ... and is that super large batting, or what is that stuff?

I'm getting to that stage for my shop, so I'm idea shopping! Thanks in advance of any help you can provide.

Thanks for checking things out! You are correct, they are indeed 8', 5' and 4' wide rolls. The side walls had the post spacing right at 8', and the end wall was 9' OC, so the 4' and 5' were used together.

They are hung by pinching them up on the top horizontal beam. A 2x4 was air nailed in place while holding the pre cut batt. It was a 2 man operation, and probably one of the least enjoyable parts of the project.

VFDs and GFIs are not very good friends :)

Excellent build, do you have plans for heat inside of there?
