I thought it would be handy to have a little 8×12 framing square. Thay are very cheap so no big deal. On Amazon, the Vinca, made in China, got good reviews but complaints that the scale on one leg was in 12ths. I looked at the picture and sure enough, it was. Then I looked at the picture of the one from HF. Same thing, 12ths. Maybe it comes from the same Chinese factory. Is there some carpentry need for 12ths of an inch or is it just a Chinese screw up? I have seen tenth scales, I have one, but never 12ths. My guess is the metric schooled Chinese figured if there are 12 inches in a foot, then the inch must be sub divided into 12ths. Sort of Imperial base 12 vs metric base 10 (mm, cm, meters).

Why bother with those when a Swanson or Empire is only a few bucks more. I only work In 8ths or 16ths

I believe its original intent was for achieving an accurate fractional measurement on a roof rise for partial of less than a full foot.

But you could do a scaled drawing where 1 inch was equivalent to 1 foot and each line would represent an inch :D

A framing square is used for framing and 1/12 divisions is handy for some layouts. I wish someone made a large square the size of a framing square but with 4r or 5r graduations.

I stand corrected. Irwin also has a 1/12 scale on their square. My measurements are more ground based and I know nothing about all the exotic calculations for roof construction. At least I avoided a square with a scale I have no use for.
