Finally, a few garage-related updates, though nothing that major. In preparation for my Swisstrax flooring (should be ordering end of January), I decided to wall-mount my two NewAge rolling tool drawers that were previously on wheels. Reason being, in the year+ that I've had my NewAge setup, I have yet to actually need to move either of the rolling drawers. That, and with the wheels on, the rolling drawers actually just barely fit under my workbench. So there would be absolutely no room to get Swisstrax under the wheels. And I didn't want to have to cut around the wheels, as that could end up looking really janky.

So I did what I should have probably done from the get go and just wall-mounted them. Now, the Swisstrax will be able to be placed cleanly under all the cabinets/drawers and everything will just look that much cleaner and better.

I also finally (not sure why I had been dragging my feet on this as long as I have been, but alas) re-mounted my HF Air Hose reel. I still have to paint the piece of wood I used for mounting so it blends in better with the wall, but I'm happy with the location and height. Just need to clean up the area underneath it so it's just the pancake compressor and nothing else.

And yes, I'm aware. I need to hide black cords. I have some leftover cord management sections from when I mounted my TV/sound bar/extension cords, so I just need to find the time to dedicate to cleaning this area up for good.

In my various travels around town lately, I've found two good examples of 3 car garages attached to colonials similar to our home. Here is the first:

49169681718_20849da998_c.jpg

While I don't mind the look of this one, I found another that both I and my wife liked much more. So much so that my wife said she'd be 100% on board if our garage could look like this one. Again, this wouldn't be for a few years, but it's never too early to start researching. Here's the style I found that we both loved:

49229598557_3c60769d79_c.jpg

We both really like the single gable to go along with the double-gable look of our house. That, and we like how the lights are located above the garage doors as opposed to being offset.

The one thing I would change is to probably put a bigger window in the gable, but that's really my only complaint.

Would the gable be purely decorative or would it create more garage space for a lift in the center or storage space? I don't know if they are just build onto the roof for architectural detailing or functional square footage.

In our scenario, it would be purely decorative. The ceilings in my garage are already 12 feet high, so I don’t need any additional space.

Don't ever let her forget this :lol:

Would look very nice if you decide to move forward with that!

Oh I won't!! haha

Agreed with the one you guys like. Seems to tie in much nicer with the house.

Agreed!

Drove by again today while in the area to get some daytime shots to get a better picture of the entire house. Aside from wanting to replicate the garage, my goal is to also enlarge the porch on one side (at least), much like this:

SwissTrax should be ordered in just about a month, once my bonus hits. Just remeasured for the 2nd time (measure twice, cut once) and it came in just under 28x24. To be safe and to account for mistakes while cutting and what not, I decided to just go with 28x24 but I may even opt for a few extra tiles, just to be safe.

Happy that I'm a HexPlus member on Obsessed Garage and will save 10% off the entire purchase price, plus SwissTrax ships free! Going to work on some possibly layouts/color combos shortly. Will probably share some of those here to get some feedback, but pretty sure I already have a good idea of what I want to move forward with.

Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas (or whatever you celebrate) and here's to a Happy New Year for all!

Second one looks much better, it looks like the garage is part of the house, the design.
The first one looks like they built a house, and then somenone dropped a garage right beside it.

I could express my thoughts on this much better and be more graphic, if it were in Spanish, lol. Sorry.

PS: Happy new year to you too!

First one just lacks the gable on the front and if it had one it would look out of place as well. Shame the land developer strips the area of natural trees, as it takes so long for tree to mature for shade and comfort in a yard.

Can't wait to see the flooring.

I see you used one of those new Harbor Freight curved blades to cut the wood as well. :lol_hitti

You know, I debated including that picture precisely because I was afraid of this. [emoji2357]

But yes, thanks for noticing. I don’t really have any proper power tools so I ended up cutting the wood by hand with a small saw. Obviously not straight enough.

I’m hoping once it’s painted it blends in better, but if it really bothers me, I’ll remove it and straighten the cut with the proper tool.

Yep, they all do it, unfortunately. Ours left a few of the trees, a few of which have already died from the ground being torn up during the initial construction phase.

Neither can I. Thinking of going with this color combo/pattern.

Yeah I do. Matt from Obsessed Garage has black cabinets in his new wash bay with that same color combo and it looks fantastic!

Funny enough i hadn't realized when i initially posted that my place has a similar peak that matches the house.

Excited to see your space with the flooring which will completely transform the look. And yes always order extras!

One suggestion, based on your OCD level of course, would be doing something similar to what i've done in my last three garages is having black on the perimeter and then paint the lower stem wall to match and visually allow it to flow. I know Matt had baseboards which worked with his application but i didn't have baseboards, nor was i going to install them. Food for thought!

Been moving at a snails pace lately. Winter and kids have taken over. But if I had to provide any updates, I guess I do have a few.

About a month ago, I used some of my fantasy football winnings to grab a few things I've been meaning to pickup. Some directly for the car and others indirectly for the car. First off, after much research, I decided to go with a set of opaque angel eyes from the Angel Eye Guy:

49317190658_da41617008_c.jpg

49317686686_05d15a7f8c_c.jpg

Very much looking forward to getting these installed, but not much of a rush since she's not leaving the garage until April the earliest.

Continuing with my Coby Wheel trend (steering wheel, shift and ebrake boots), I picked up a black Alcantara ebrake handle with red/navy/blue stitching.

49367833328_5fdae22712_c.jpg

I also took Matt's (OG) advice and picked up a set of Future Classic 15mm spacers. Haven't installed them yet, but I will be putting these up front and my 12mm spacers in the rear.

49363393972_5cf715b19e_c.jpg

Oh and I snagged these sweet BMW M-Tech inspired socks:

49363516821_6134c58d0f_z.jpg

The other purchases were detailing related. I picked up an EGO 530 blower (kit w/ battery and charger) to mainly use for drying off my cars after washes, but it will also occasionally see yard duty. But I've got an older Echo gas blower that will be the primary yard tool.

ego-cordless-leaf-blowers-lb5302-64_1000.jpg

And lastly, to pair with my Sunjoe SPX3000 pressure washer and 50' kobrajet hose, I picked up a Cox Hose Reel:

I'll probably need a 5' jumper hose, but I'll wait until everything is in and mounted where I'd like before I grab one. Again, no rush because winter. That said, I did find some pretty good inspiration on the OG Facebook group for mounting my reel. Love the look of this setup https://www.facebook.com/groups/obsessedgarage/permalink/2221704434744947/

Just not sure how easy it would be to find something like that, as I don't think I am capable of making/machining something like that, myself. Anyone have any ideas? My backup plan is to do what I do with the air hose reel and use a wooden board to mount it between my garage doors. Roughly right around where the top of the shovel handle ends (pardon the old, pre-painted photo):

43947661180_f126e64256_c.jpg

Before we left for our cruise last week, I did have a plumber come by to give me a quote on running water (hot and cold) into my garage. To have it run to the same area as the reel (between the garage doors), he said it would definitely be under $800, but he wanted to price out all the materials before he gave me a more precise number. This would be with using Pex for a clean, finished look. And ideally I would have two hookups added. A dedicated bucket filler and another for my pressure washer. Still waiting to hear back from him, though we did touch base earlier this week. Hoping to get this done in early Spring, so needless to say, I'm VERY excited. I need to keep in mind that I'd like to add a DI setup to my pressure washer, so things will need to be spaced out to eventually accommodate that. I'll probably switch over the outlet to a GFI to account for being near a water source. I may also raise the location of the outlet, but we'll see about that.

What else....um, I got really lucky and stumbled upon a spare used EGO 2.0Ah battery on craigslist a few weeks ago for a fantastic price. My blower came with a 2.5Ah, but I wanted a second battery as a backup if/when I run out of juice while drying cars. I met up with the guy yesterday and since he was only asking $40, I didn't bother trying to negotiate any lower, since that was already a great price. For comparison, Home Depot sells them brand new for $129.99.

Oh wow the og OG garage. I need to go back and find that thread.

Yessir! It's always fun to go back through his old posts.

Funny enough i hadn't realized when i initially posted that my place has a similar peak that matches the house.

Oh go figure!

You and me, both, man! I was amazed at how much just the paint and cabinets transformed the garage. I don't know if I'm prepared for the next step the flooring will allow me to take. Order will be placed roughly 22 hours from now!! :bounce:

I'm actually going with mostly slate gray for the flooring, with a black border for some contrast. But the black border won't be up against the walls. Instead, it'll be one or two tiles away from the walls, so not sure it'll work for me. But I appreciate the suggestion, nonetheless. I love how it looks in your garage!

Oh and I still need to fix the air hose reel mounting board, since I was called out earlier! :lol_hitti Trying to figure out the easiest way to fix it without removing it from the wall, entirely. Perhaps simply a sanding block?!

HA, it's mainly been play money (fantasy football winnings). The flooring will be paid for by my annual bonus that hits tomorrow, a gift to myself!

Fair enough. I know AE's aren't for everyone, but I absolutely love the look of them on E46 M3's.

From everything I've read, 15 fronts/12 rears are the ideal setup for OEM ZCP wheels on stock suspension. So should be close to flush.

Spacers are a go to for me, i think my personal inventory is at least 10 sets to get that perfect fitment.

I had originally put the 12mm's up front, but they weren't enough to give me the look I was going for. That, and the place I had the tires mounted and balanced at didn't do a great job of balancing the wheels, so there's a little vibration up front. Once the weather warms up, I'm going to a more reputable shop to get the wheels re-balanced and then install the spacers, front and rear.

We'll see if it's one and done for me. I won't hold my breath. :headscrat

better me "pointing it out" then moreman seeing it and blowing a brain vessel.

I got you!

Nicely done Shaun! I may be biased because yours looked familiar. I put mine up quite a while ago. I changed the guide roller to face down because I whacked my head on the quick connect one too many times. May have gotten carried away with the mounting screws.
attachment.php

I got more than a decade out of the original red hoses but when they started cracking I replaced them with Flexzilla hoses. Because the Flexzilla hoses have thinner walls I was able to replace the 3/8" hose with 50 feet of 1/2" Flexzilla.
attachment.php

I started out with a 25-foot reel and didn't want to toss it when I installed the 50-foot. The hose that goes up to the ceiling connects the two with a 20-foot run of 1/2" copper. The second reel is over the third bay and really comes in handy to blow off the wheels when I'm done washing the car and when the temperature changes and I have to fill the tires. Something to think about when you do the garage expansion. I was sanding the Corvette bodywork so I was always covered with dust. Installed that green shower head with a ball valve so I could blow myself off before going in the house.

As many of us on GJ know, your opinion is a valuable one, Bob. So thank you for the input and feedback! I will definitely keep that in mind moving forward. I blow off my vehicles with a leaf blower, but will occasionally pull out a blow gun and get into the cracks.

I am watching the VinWiki garage series now... have you noticed that every garage or shop space he designs looks identical? The garage design business is going to be super easy for him to start if its just, "get these cabinets, this paint, this grey swisstrax...."

I thought the same thing. And perhaps I'm just drinking the Kool-aid, but I love that look. And most others seem to, as well. So why mess with success?!

My walls are painted harbor grey and I went with slate grey and black Swisstrax.

Haha I didn’t say it was a bad look, I like it. But he has put out a free blueprint for anyone to follow, why would you pay him to design your garage. You know what you are going to get.

Oh I don't disagree. I think he's simply targeting those people who don't want to do any of the work themselves. Those with big $$ and little time (or care).

Yeah probably. I’m trying to figure out why the vinwiki guy needs a massive air compressor and 5 drops to fill up his kids basketball. That dude doesn’t work on his own cars.

Haha, Matt actually references that it's probably overkill, but why not. Again, big $$$. Dude can afford it!

And in the VinWiki video where he presents his overhauled garage, he even jokes about the compressor, too.

Matt has got something great going for him, but I'd love to see more creativity in his garage setups.
Maybe for things like this, I never got really hooked by him or his YT channel.

To chime in to this convo, i agree with all that mention his places all look the same. But i think to be fair that's exactly what his true market wants. They simply want his exact look; not a traditional designer role where its inspired by the actual owner of the home and created based off that. I think for the most part this community enjoys hearing and seeing ideas and then incorporating them into their own unique interpretation. My two cents :)

Sorry didn't mean to start a thread jack. I enjoy Matt's videos, they are great to have on in the garage or while on the treadmill at gym. I like the design but if he starts doing a lot more videos on garage builds they are going to be kinda cookie cutter. Dubber is a perfect example of having a style, but all 3 garage builds have some different elements that make threads interesting.
