I couldn't resist plugging it in to see how it worked once I brought it home.

Holy $#!t, now I need Outlaw to come pick it up before anyone gets seriously hurt!

Actually, if you clamped it down, and with a platen/anvil under that mallet, it could be made pretty useful for metal working.

Holy $h1t is right!!!...that's freakin' awesome! Thanks.

Steve sent me the Vid, the kids loved it; SWMBO was like "But what would you use it for?" Duh, Hammerin! :D

Actually, I want to do some light forging and with my right shoulder the way it is, that is the real reason I wanted it. That and see about settig it up for metal forming over a shaped anvil. Which is what I believe it was originally intended for. I don't think the casters are original, and after talking to the PO before making the deal, I'm even more sure of it.

The bottom hammer face has (what is left of) a rawhide insert, the top has a steel one. (I think for added mass for a heavier blow.) I'm also thinking I could set it up with a special hammer face, and a special anvil along with a guide, and do blade fullers on it as another possibility.

No, its not an extremely heavy duty power hammer, but again, its for relatively light work. Change the striking face to steel, and replace the top steel one with a good slug of lead and I'd bet the head could weigh in at 5-6 lbs....

Here it is. Looks like it is missing a piece.

Doesn't really explain the rawhide insert . . .

[EDIT] A little more info:

Also called a Cavanaugh nailer, it was used to assure a uniform tight bond between the hardwood and the floor joist.

Historical Usage

From a historical perspective, thinner hardwoods (most notably 5/16") were used in several time periods and are still being used today in some markets with the California Bay region being one. The older product had one common characteristic; they were milled without a tongue and groove that required top nailing or fastening into the face with a specialized tool called a Cavanaugh nailer. No longer manufactured, a new pneumatic fastener made by High Pro Tools ...

In my region, here in California’s Bay Area, older homes typically have a floor not commonly found in many other areas: solid 5/16-inch-thick, top-nailed oak floors. Some are 2 inches wide with a square edge, some are random widths with a full bevel and walnut pegs, ... (there are also pockets of this flooring in other regions of the country, such as Philadelphia and New York). If you mainly do tongue-and-groove floors, then you will be surprised and challenged by working with these top-nail floors (and vice versa). I have learned the following while working on these floors over the last decade.

Here in Portland Oregon, many of the grand NW and SW Portland homes have "Siberian Oak" as the top nail material. It came to America in the 1900's as dunnage on freighters and became flooring thru Yankee ingenuity.

According to the Urban Dictionary, karled is defined as:
To be extremely drunk or wasted. Example: Did you see Steve last night? He was so Karled he passed out in his bowl of chicken noodle soup.

That could lend a whole new meaning to "Karled Power Mallett" :lol_hitti

Holy ****, how does that thing not destroy itself in the sheer physics involved? I can see that thing eating bearings and snapping weld joints.

And it would be awesome to watch it do just that alone.

Cool!

Reminds me of that old show "Battle Bots". regardless, it looks like one very powerful tool...to be treated with respect *shutter*

Hahhaha I'm crying over here I'm laughing so hard.

I want the damn thing. Would be a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon, playing a game of "will it smash?"

To wit: "Don't Breath this!"
