Steve sent me the Vid, the kids loved it; SWMBO was like "But what would you use it for?" Duh, Hammerin!
Actually, I want to do some light forging and with my right shoulder the way it is, that is the real reason I wanted it. That and see about settig it up for metal forming over a shaped anvil. Which is what I believe it was originally intended for. I don't think the casters are original, and after talking to the PO before making the deal, I'm even more sure of it.
The bottom hammer face has (what is left of) a rawhide insert, the top has a steel one. (I think for added mass for a heavier blow.) I'm also thinking I could set it up with a special hammer face, and a special anvil along with a guide, and do blade fullers on it as another possibility.
No, its not an extremely heavy duty power hammer, but again, its for relatively light work. Change the striking face to steel, and replace the top steel one with a good slug of lead and I'd bet the head could weigh in at 5-6 lbs....
