So I need to pad the existing studs out a bit .
Existing are 2.5" , so I need another inch.
Is it a problem to use 1/2" drywall to gain the 1"?
Or is plywood necessary. Going to be hanging 1/2"
Sheetrock.

Thanks!

I've seen it done that way, and it can work if you use longer screws for the drywall on top.
But, are we talking about a small area?

Yeah that was the plan.
I assumed it'd be fine, but just wanted to double check. Thanks !

You can temporarily attach the furring strips to the existing studs with construction adhesive, then fasten the drywall to the furred out studs with the longer Drywall Screws.
