i just ordered my g73 electric heater today for a 24x36 garage with 8 foot ceilings.well insulated,hopefully it lives up to what ive been hearing about it.will post how it works in southdakota in the winter

mine works great, just takes a little while to heat up when its really cold out.i have an uninsulated 24x24 though.

You're probably a little shy in the KW department, but it should work, especially if you're well insulated as you say. 5000 W into 864 ft2= 5.8 watts/ft2. That's a little low. Well insulated residential heating is spec'd at ~ 7 watts/ft2. An older spec was 10 watts/ft2. I predict it'll take quite a while to heat up your space after opening a garage door in the middle of winter, but time will tell.

If it's not enough, you could always plug in 1 or 2 1500w baseboard or fan-forced heaters if you have enough capacity. Our code here requires one 15 amp circuit for each garage bay to allow for plugging in block heaters in the winter.

I had a 4800w construction heater in a 22x24 well insulated garage, or 9 watts/ft2, and it was enough but did take a while to heat up. I only used in intermittently though.

i recieved my heater,i was kinda shocked at how small it was,i opened the box and there was another box inside it,well packaged and prompt delivery,but the reviews were good.im positive i will order another just so im sure it will keep up if i half to open the garage door in the winter

i put the g73 in,runs great,didnt get the start up smell,not very loud,puts out a lot of heatwill see what it does this winter.used a 30 amp breaker with 10-2 wiring

I've got my Dayton G73 in the garage waiting for me to get some time to install it. Install looks straight forward. Wondering how effective it is at heating your space as my space is a bit larger at 26' x 32' w/12' ceiling. I've got R19 in walls and ceiling and suspect I'll have to pick up a second unit if I want to bring temp up from 20's-30's to 55-60 degrees.
I see you mentioned you may add another one as well. The Dayton G73 I have looks different from the one you installed. Is yours a G73 as well?

I have been looking at these as well. The ones from air & water are advertised as a G73 but do not have the Dayton label. Some other brand. The physical dimensions are also much smaller than the Dayton G73. Otherwise, I think the specs are the same. Do your own comparisons before pulling the trigger. I will be ordering the Dayton.

I have the Dayton g in a well insulated tight 24x24 9' 6'' ceiling it does a great job
but for the size of your building I think in order to be happy, I think you will need two units and when low temps hit use both.

I've got the exact same Dayton G73 unit as Harvero in the above post. Hooked mine up last week and it seems to be okay though I haven't put it to a real test yet as the temps are still not that low. Walked into the garage this morning, temperature reading of 47, turned the dial on the wall mounted thermostat to 60-65 and about an hour or so later it was at 59. That's really all I'm looking for. Just hope it can do that when it'ws 20 degrees outside.

its about 10 degrees out today and my g73 is keeping my motorcycle side of my garage(12x24 well insulated 2x6 walls) about 60 degrees on low,uninsulated walk in door.putting one in my car side(24x24 2x4 insulated walls and insulated doors) love working in a warm garage.only thing i dont like about the air and water inc. one is the thermastat is on the back,hard to see....but works great

The Fahrenheat and the Dayton look to be the same deal, including the mounting strap configuration, holes, etc. That would be a Good Thing.

The NewAir box doesn't look like either of those units.

I recently bought the NewAir, and I'm not too happy so far. I'm in Pittsburgh, and current temps. are 30 degrees or so. My garage is attached, insulated, and is 19x25. Temps. started at 42 in the garage (I had the door open before turning the heater on), and after an hour it reached 48. I exchanging this unit right now....hoping somehow its defective.

you must have a bad unit,im in southdakota and the temps been down to 0 and my heater heats up plenty,almost gets 2 warm on high,gets garage up to 70

Also, if the G73 is like the Fahrenheat unit, the heat output can be adjusted by moving some jumper wires. Be sure your unit it setup correctly.

does your element in the heater turn orange at all when its on? i'd expect some sort of color change when this thing is getting hot??

i think the NewAir only has one way to wire it...

no my element doesent change color when its hot,i keep it on low because on hi it almost cooks you out when your workin

I just got the Dayton G73. For awhile I was a little fooled as well by the New Air mislabel. I purchased from the greenhouse mega store and it was delivered a few days later. My G73 is installed in a 750 square foot insulated (r13 walls, r30 ceiling) 3.5 car garage. With the temp at around 6 degrees F, the garage started at 36 and went to 51 degrees in about 2 hours. For me, this is exactly what I needed. I have since set it on low and it keeps the garage about 48 degrees. I am very happy with it thus far!!

I was just out in my attached garage...the G73 switched on when I walked out. I'm still amazed at how well that little guy works. I keep that garage set at about 50 since I'm not out there...just two cars parked there...but I want to make sure my car washing stuff doesn't freeze.

I don;t remember ever seeing it ever get red or "look" hot..but it pumps heat!

For a 5 kW G73, you need 10-2 w/ground and a 30 amp breaker. Unless the run is like really long, which it should not be in a 36x26. They stock 10-3 w/ground in the box stores and it's cheaper - you can run that and just not use the neutral wire. I used a 30A twist lock plug and socket with a short piece of 10-3 cord at the heater. That lets me spin it around and it's also easier to take it down should I need to service the unit.

I've been running a G73 in my 28 x 32 x 10 decently insulated garage the past two winters. At the lowest setting, it keeps the garage at 45F when it's 10 - 15 outside without running all the time. Any warmer and the electric bill shows it.

Quick question about the G73. I see on mine there is a setting of "Low" then two marks on the other side of that. Are these two marks the "off" position or just a lower temp setting. If I turn it all the way counter clock wise it just stops instead of a positive click indicating the unit is off. Any thoughts? Thanks! Chad

Hey guys, any reason a natural gas heater wasn't an option? I'm building a garage that's a little under 800 sq ft and put a Hawt Dawg gas heater in there. If I set the thermostat up from 45f to 65f, it reaches temperature in about 10 minutes. Tested it earlier today, and it's about 15f outside.
Gas is pretty cheap these days...

Hey Bugnett. For me it was simply as ease of installation issue. I didn't have easy access to my NG pipe and I didn't have the resources to put in a vent myself so I went with the G73. Total cost for the heater and electrical was less than $300. Don't think I could do much better than that for initial cost. Electricity is only about 5.5 cents per Kwh so that isn't bad either. I picked mine up today for my 20x28 insulated shop.
