Well I'm having a guy come out to the house and do a consultation. I like the fact that they have many options for set up but I'm still skeptical on cost and construction. The only thing I have found is that Hometime TV did a segment on them.

I am in an area with no representatives. In such cases, redline will deal with you directly. I contacted them twice and no response. A year later they got back to me and apologized. I had already gone somewhere else.

What kind did you choose and how do you like them?

I looked at them but there just powder coated MDF. I will never buy a wood cabinet for a garage in michigan. It's just a matter of time before they fail from our winters and all the moisture in the garages. I went with baldhead and love them.

I ordered saber cabinets in blue steel. Waiting for those has been another story but they are in freight right now to be delivered Monday. I'll have a review up in a couple weeks as I put them together / install them.

Baldhead Cabinets great people to deal with and excellent cabinets

Yeah. There are lots of good high end cabinets. I looked at them all and they don't fit the OP's criteria. In the end, I decided that spending $5k on a full wall of storage cabinets and work bench was more to my liking.

Since saber is a sponsor of this site, would be good to know your experience with them. I've been eyeing them also and they look nice on the web.

Hello! I happen to work for one of RedLine Garagegear's sister companies, GarageCabinets.com.

@c7fx Please let me know what area you are in and the name of the dealer you contacted for a consultation. I will personally get in touch with them to make sure they provide you with the best service and information possible. For more info about RedLine Garagegear products, processes, and some great installation photos please visit www.RedLineGaragegear.com.

@bdamico I would like to personally apologize for the oversight. We value every single customer that we have the privilege of working with. Like any machine, sometimes one slips thru the cracks. Please forward me your information (i.e. name, city, state, zip code) and I will look into this further. Even though you went with a different company perhaps there is something we can do to rectify this situation.

@911mike I'm not sure what your experience with wood cabinets has been but I can assure you that "just powder coated MDF" is not an accurate description of the garage cabinets provided by RedLine Garagegear. The powder coat has proven to be able to withstand the typical temperature extremes, humidity, and rough handling one would find in most garages. And just in case that isn't enough RedLine Garagegear provides an industry leading lifetime warranty. As of this posting not one customer (in most all Northern states and Canada) has needed to use that warranty due to breakdown under temperature extremes.

Thank you all so much for posting your thoughts and opinions. Please let me know if you have any further questions. I look forward to learning from all of the great folks on Garage Journal and also look forward to sharing my knowledge with you.

I have a old cupboard in the garage made of mdf. The bottom got rotten because of being wet. I took my skillsaw and cut the bottom rotten boards off and replaced with some scrap wood I had laying around. Should be good for a long time now. I bet this cabinet is at least 5 to 10 years old. (Got it from my sister inlaw)
Mdf is fine as long as its off of the floor.

No need. The guy I spoke with was very nice and explained it was an employee issue last year that has been resolved. It was funny. I emailed twice looking for quotes--no response. Then I got one of those automated mass emails from the company and I responded that you guys didn't even bother to respond to my requests. They called me and explained. Frankly, it looks like you all have some good cabinets--although I like the plain fronts of your cabinets better than redline's (if memory servers me).

Just got 4 pallet loads today. Cracked a couple boxes open and they look beautiful. It will take me a few weeks at least to get to it, but I'll create a new thread when they go up.

I don't disagree that they are not a good product my point is I think that a good powder coated steel cabinet will out last a good powder coated MDF cabinet. Also there are features like multi small shallow drawers that were available and heavy duty shelfs plus they did some very custom cabinets that made better sense for MY needs.

The cabinets I purchased were a bit more money than the Redline but in my opinion they will be the last cabinets I ever buy for this garage.

@TedM RedLine Garagegear has been featured on the hit television series Home Time and also in several other print publications. RedLine has an online presence via their website (www.RedLineGaragegear.com), Facebook (www.facebook.com/RedLineGaragegear), and Twitter (www.twitter.com/RedLine_Garage). We have over 50 dealers operating in various locations across the United States and Canada. I invite you to learn more about RedLine Garagegear by checking us out online.

@911mike Thank you for clarifying that it is your OPINION and that your choice was based on YOUR needs. I'm not really sure how you are quantifying "outlast" but I just want to reiterate that not a single one of our customers has ever had to replace a cabinet or system due to its inability to withstand temperature extremes. We build our cabinets to last a lifetime and that's why we can offer a lifetime warranty you won't find anywhere else.

@dandan111 Because our MDF cabinets are powder coated they are resistant to most water damage. But just to be safe our cabinets are designed with an off the floor design so there is no risk of them getting damaged by water on the floor.

@bdamico I'm happy to hear that someone has already contacted you; sad to hear that you had to go with another company because we were too late. I hope your new cabinets work out well for you. Thanks.

it drives me absolutely insane when there are no prices on a website. I just move on 99.99% of the time when i come across this.

What drives me a crazy is someone who advertises on-line with "please call". Also people who's primnary business in done on-line but they don't promptly answer e-mails.

@DigitalFusion I can understand your frustration with that. There are several reasons RedLine Garagegear does not post pricing online. The main one, however, is because every system we build is custom. We have over 500 different cabinet lengths, widths, depths, and configurations available to choose from. We think it would be simply overwhelming for a customer to look through all of that to find what they need. This is why we encourage you to enter your zip code on our website (www.RedLineGaragegar.com) to find your local dealer. If there is no dealer in your area you can contact RedLine directly by filling out a form. From there you will be able to see some pricing and one of our design specialists will assist you with putting together your storage system.

I'm a little skeptical about powdered coated MDF, but then, there are different things they come up with everyday. I'd be willing to try one out, but I'd like to see some prices on the site. If they are reasonable then I may even go for a few. I'd really hate to go for something like that though and even if it has a lifetime warranty, it just gets to be a hassle when you have to use it.

Why don't you guys buy some a-b fur 3/4 plywood, glue, screws, hinges, nails, stain , varish, etc. and go for it! Make it yourself and be proud of it. $1000s for garage storage, give me a break.

I think powder coating MDF is a very similar technique to powder coating metal. Involving an electric charge, curing oven and all that. I think it is a pretty common to find powder coated wood in home and office furniture/cabinets as well. The DIG cabinets I have for sale have black powder coated panels but the doors have thermal formed vinyl.

@bdkruger1 It is absolutely possible to powder coat wood. Check out www.PowderCoatMDF.com/powder-coating-wood/ for all the details.

@lowheat You're right the process is pretty much the same as powder coating metal just using different materials. I believe the metal is a bit more forgiving, however. With wood everything has to be just right for the powder to bond with the wood (i.e. MDF has right internal bond strength and accurate moisture content; heated and cooled to an exact temperature; etc.).

I have learned that sometimes its cheaper to buy what you want than to try and build it. Today raw materials, time, and energy can cost more than going out and buying it.

Well I talked to the guy today and looked at the samples. My first impression of the powder coated MDF is it looks like plastic feels like wood. Its hard to describe but its like when you perceive something to be heavy and as you pick it up its very light. Thats the illusion I get with this product. I was thinking it would be flimsy but in fact its very rugged feeling. Not to say it looks cheap because thats not it at all.
The drawers also look well built with dovetail construction. I didn't get to see the whole system together but I do have the opportunity to visit the showroom.

Things I liked about the system is that there are many different combinations of drawer sizes and cabinets. Its very modular so one can pick and choose the combination that best suits the need. The countertops are thick. I liked the butcher block better only because the "impact Coating" looked difficult to clean since its a rough texture. Its basically truck bed-liner.

The Brushed stainless (contemporary) handles looked very nice and beefy, but I would caution the use of them on the drawers since they will just act like hooks and grab everything from belt loops to anything you might be working on. If I do go with this system I would probably get them for the cabinets and have the Anodized aluminum handles for the drawers. Just a thought.

I was very impressed with the guy who came out seemed very knowledgable and had some great ideas. He gave me suggestions with reasons behind it which I liked.

I do have some concerns that I asked about. One was if having a vice on the countertop would harm it. His response was depends on the weight of the item and the torque that might be used. One thing he did suggest was to install feet on the normally hanging unit to counter extreme weights.

I wasn't impress with some of the colors like the burgundy. I guess thats a personal impression and has nothing to do with the quality.

So the million dollar question is cost, and at this point I still don't know. When asked he honestly said until he works it out in the computer he really doesn't have an idea or doesn't want to tell me. Not sure but thats fine I understand it will be all custom so price will vary. I will keep everyone posted on the cost and if I actually use them. At this point I like what I see.

well I got a quote from redline with a computer sketch of the final product. They tell me that it would be about 6700. That is complete install etc. I like the idea that it will look uniform and that its a lifetime warranty but I just can't bring myself to the fact that its so much. I'm just trying to justify the price in my head.
Anyways I wanted to post this for others that might be interested and curious of cost. Since I couldn't find anything...The top cabinets were quoted at 1400 alone installed. Hope this helps others who are curious. Price will vary depending on what options you choose but at least this gives a ballpark idea on cost

That's pretty cool. I'm going to start to post my saber thread within the next week. Really like the stuff. My full wall was about 4k delivered (I got 3 uppers/2 six drawer lowers / 90 inch work top/2 48" storage cabs / and 1 30" storage cabinet)--I'm guessing with significantly more storage space (but less work space). I really like it and think you would too.

I had these installed and my first impression is that they are a quality unit. The people that installed them took their time and did a great job. They came out yesterday set up everything installed most of the cabinets. Today they came back hung all the doors and installed all the drawers. They even installed my vice before they left.

Here are some pictures after the first day and complete

c7fx,
Those cabinets are sharp looking.

Thanks They actually are very solid. Time will tell but I'm happy I got them and the price is in line with other cabinets of similar quality.

+1. Same thing happened to me. I kind of like the product, and the fact that the tall cabinets hang entirely from the wall. That would have worked really well for me.

The lack of prices online puts me off as well. I think it's a terrible business model in this day and age. Then I had trouble getting a response from them, and I moved on.

Their loss.

Damn those look great. I'ma likin' the pull out parts bins. Any other hidden goodies like that in any of the other cabinets?

Just out of curiosity, any idea as how those compare to the IKEA kitchen cabinets? Heavier built, thicker wood? What makes me curious is how those have legs that keep them off of the floor and IKEA are about the same way plus IKEA's are made from MDF also.

$6000 may seem a little steep, but I'd say location may play a part, but they do have a lifetime warranty, as long as the company is in business for a lifetime. I'm sure it added a little equity to the house if you would ever go to sell.
