Garage Construction Delay

I need some advice.

I'm having a 36x48x16 pole barn built to be my garage. Construction has been underway for nearly three weeks now. Everything has been going smooth with the contractor and his crew, up until a few days ago.

They were finishing hanging the girders and I came out and noticed they put girders where one of the roll up doors was intended to be. After a few minutes of being quietly frustrated, I told them it was fine and not a big deal that the door would be located further back than originally planned.

The rest of the day went smooth, they finished most of the girders, and left for the day. Usually they come let me know when they're leaving, but that day they just left. It's now been 3 days without them working, my contractor is responding to texts vaguely, and when asked when his guys will be back, he doesn't respond.

Should I be worried? I feel like I might be overreacting, but I wanted to put feelers out to get input from others. Thanks!

Maybe he told them he won't pay them for the screw up and they don't want to come back.

Are you calling girders what i call purlins? The horizontal boards that hold the screws for the metal sheeting?

At this stage those wouldn't to too hard to move, fixing the problem...

I would think an hour or so tops and all solved. Not much work to keep a client happy.

I'm calling girders the horizontal rails on the sides of the building. Aren't purlins the support rails that cross the roofing?

Perkins are on the roof.....girts on he walls. No girders.
My part of the world we call anything non stud framed that is designed to run screws into for tin siding a purlin.

From what ive gathered thanks to google im wrong and right. Wrong because technically purlin is only to describe roofs but it varies from region to region.

None the less girder is still wrong and confusing. Hence why i tried to clairify in my post the exact part i was talking about.

Purlin, girder, girt, rail. That's irrelevant to the original question. Thanks for taking it off topic though 👍🏻

I would go and have a face to face with the contractor, I would insist that it was fixed. You should have a contract and they should have plans that show where ever thing should be put.

Actually my original comment was that they should have just fixed their error with not being able to put the garage door where it was planned.

In not so many words i was implying thats a red flag. Seems like you had issues with this contractor before they quit showing up. I would be concerned a good bit at this point.

Seems like others agree with my point that the garage door thing should have been fixed as well.

Sorry for getting off topic but you said girders and i wanted to be sure we were all talking about the same thing which i called a different improper name and someone else corrected me on.

I think I would have a sit down with the contractor. Tell him you want the girts moved to match your original plans. Also demand an explanation as to why he has not been showing up or returning your calls. If a crew has been working 3 weeks on this pole building, it should be done by now.

I would have them correct the mistake, no ifs, ands or buts about it. There is NO need for you to take the hit because of the contractor not paying attention...but don't feel too bad, I had to stop a contractor from building a house on the wrong floor plan. He was prepping the site and laying plumbing in the dirt when I caught it. They were supposed to build a reverse plan instead of standard so the layout was 180 degrees off. It cost him a few bucks but it was his mistake, not mine. This was over 30 yrs ago and I still own the house.

Sounds like a small error easily corrected which should not be such a big deal that the contractor won't come back to the job. Seems like there is something else going on. Could be as simple as he's starting another job, has a previous job he is behind on or maybe, you have done or said something that pissed him off. It's time you sat down with him and got things straightened out so you can move forward. There's a reason for his attitude and it would be prudent for you to find out.

I wouldn't "worry", could be a thousand reasons why they are elsewhere - decided to to a small job for friend or family, somebody quit or got arrested, sick, hunting, mudding,... all are more likely than being upset about having a simple mistake pointed out ( you should just have them fix it).

He is avoiding your questions because he doesn't want to explain the likely dumb reason that they are doing something else...rude, but too soon to worry imo.

Update: Contractor came out yesterday and we had a long discussion. He was extremely apologetic for the lack of communication and for the door location being mistake. He insisted on making it right and explained that he's having some supplier issues for the trusses so that's why his crew hasn't been back. He said he doesn't have much work for them to do until trusses arrive. I asked him to just keep me in the loop and step up on the communication. Hopefully the project will get back on track soon.
