Garage door install before sheetrock

Progress is slowly being made with my build, Thur or Friday my garage doors should be installed. I am not having the GC sheetrock the garage due to the cost, but intend to go back and do it myself in the next few months after I finish my wiring plan etc.

I have read a number of posts regarding sheetrocking before the door install, or remove the door install then sheetrocking.

I am wondering if I have another option which would be to place squares of drywall up where the mounts for the door will go along with the opener. (Maybe 24"x24")

I know it will require more patch work setting large sheets up later. Any other problems with this?

Personally I would go with 1/2 sanded ply under the door mounts. Take it to the next stud, or corner if it's close. That is an area that will likely see some water at times and I just hate swollen sheetrock.
Just a thought.

Just drop the back hangs when you get to that point. Install the Sheetrock and just shoot the lags back into the same holes..No patch work!

Just make sure your door is at least 1/2 way closed when dropping the back hangs, no surprises that way..

I think he's talking about the ceiling and there better be no leaks there. :lol_hitti

Depending on the wall condition the uprights should be on lumber proud of the wall face. So bringing drywall up to the jamb should pose no problem AFA walls go.

Now with respect to the opener itself, if no drywall is there and the ceiling joists are exposed, the installer will go up along side the joist. You don't want that. That goes for the tracks as well. You want laterals screwed to the bottom of the joists and the struts bolted to them. That way you can remove the screws and slip the drywall under them just as upndown suggested.

Just did what you want to do, I had some smooth siding left over that was 1/2 inch thick so I ripped it 4 inches wide and put it under the brackets that hold the tracks to the wall. I just put a piece of sheet rock under the hangers so I can drop them and just install the rock and bolt the brackets back up. I'm going to wait on the opener until the sheet rock is installed.
