O.k., the search thread turned up a huge amount of threads on this subject. I would like to insulate my garage door to retain heat and keep cool in the summer. I have seen kits at HD for this. Question, how well do these work vs. me cutting to fit my own foam with a foil covering?

I was going to go with the kit but ended up buying insulation board and cutting it to fit. I works very well, but I can not compare it to the kit.
I'll upload some pics later if you want.

On my double door I did 2 layers of foam, one was a blue foam and the other was the foil backed white stuff.

On my single door I got a kit and it turned out to be a fiber glass batting like you use in the walls only thinner. I used that and also put a layer of the white foam with the foil to make both doors look uniform on the inside.

Either way was about the same.

I did two 7x16 doors with 1/2" reflective backed foam. I've done one 8x7 with 1" hard foam insulation. All worked/working very well - I would not see any reason to buy a kit. Kinda help to know how big your door is.

I bought a kit from Lowes.com. Well worth the price. The panels are serrated to make it easier to install in the door panels. Also, the scrim side can be painted.

I just did the foamboard, attached with construction adhesive. Works great, but fragile. I wish I had something to cover it with.

Be sure to buy the insulation seal that attach to your door frame. Inexpensive. That helped a lot in the wind leakage.
