Is the LiftMaster 8500 still the hot set-up for residential garage door openers?

Also, how does one add battery backup? Just buy the battery and install it? No additional kit necessary?

I don't know about the battery....

But I do know the only potential drawback to the 8500 is your type of door. The operner depends on some weight on the cables to keep them tight

A lot of people swear by certain brands, but personally, I don't think it makes a whole lot of difference. I guess in some cases it matters, depending on what type of a door you have, some really big heavy doors need a really "tough" opener, but for a regular garage door I suspect pretty much any brand would give you acceptable service.

I have a chamberlain opener, my oldest daughter has a Genie, two friends of mine have a Craftsman, and the list goes on. They all work reasonably well so I have to think that any opener would give you decent service as long as you aren't opening and closing the door constantly. If the door will be going up and down 50 times a day, then I can see where you would want to be much more selective in the opener that you buy.

The LM 8500 is a nice opener. I have 3 of them and had no problems with them. The back up battery plugs into a connector on the front/bottom of opener. No other parts are needed.

I have 2 of the Ryobi GDOs and I'm very happy. 2hp belt drive. Battery backup from a Ryobi tool battery. Tons of plug n play accessories as well. Smartphone app and wifi enabled right out of the box.

You'll be surprised by the weight of the 8500's battery pack. That being said it's plug and play.
