I was wondering if there are other options for hanging garage door rails other than the classic angle iron kits ? I was looking for white brackets or something a little cleaner (less cheap) ? Any ideas ?

I could always paint them white if I can't find any other options.

I'm talking about these angle iron kits.

Its just a structure, you could make it from bent rods or tube steel, sheetmetal or real angle iron, welded or bolted. It could be dressed with wood grain or painted. Those are just the minimum-price-point-one-kit-fits-nearly-all-sizes.

As others have said, it's just structure. Also, you don't have to buy this stuff in a "kit" you can buy the punched angle at your big box home improvement store, in 8-10' lengths. Also it comes in both "residential" and "commercial" sizes. The commercial size is just larger and thicker angle. I've bought 10' lengths from a local garage door business for several non garage door projects around the shop.

Really fancy it up....

Use two sistered 2x4s (making a 4x4) and then slip a deck post cover over top. High-line look all the way... but cheap.

I did more or less the same thing. If they don't line up directly with the ceiling joists, you just put in a couple crossmembers to hold them in place. It's plenty rigid and strong.

I used some angle iron about 36 inches long and bolted it to a cross member in 2 places above the ceiling and it is very rigid. I am going to install a metal ceiling so I will just have to cut a L shaped hole for the support. I mounted my junction box for my heater on one of them.

Sounds interesting! Wonder how well the powder coat holds up where the roller makes contact?

Let's just say, I've never done a follow up call on a door that used powder coated hardware that looked like the day it was installed. Not so much wear on the powder coating, but staining from different lubricants, black powdering at the hinge points etc. if you clean it, it still needs to be lubricated...vicious time consuming cycle! But hey..to each his own.

Hi all,

I'm looking for similar options for the rear hangers - I just reconfigured my garage door for a high lift option with a jackshaft opener and the brackets are the ugliest thing in the room now :)

What are any options that you have been using since this was originally discussed ~4 years ago?

My garage door opener is hung from EMT that has been flattened on the ends and the bolt holes were punched in them.
