We had the reverse problem some years ago. I had a buddy who was a white collar office geek, but loved to hang out in the garage and do 'guy stuff'. His wife was an obnoxious snob who made no attempt to hide her disdain for a troglodyte like me. No- I didn't bang her- too skinny.

I didn't grow up around any of this stuff. Wanted to take shop in HS but "you have to take Latin so you can get into college" . And my dad had NO interest in anything like this and the one or two times he tried to show me something I didn't hold the hammer right or something and he took the tool away from me. So 4 years ago I decided there were some things I'd always wanted to do and it was now or never. Have made a lot of mistatkes but have all my fingers and now that I'm "retired" i'm douling down. LOL:)

I've been real lucky in this department. My wife and I met at a conference and had a long distance relationship until I took a job in her city to be with her and try living somewhere where not everybody knew my name. For a while, all I had were her friends, but she has great taste in friends Almost every single couple she was friends with are awesome people. I have become great friends with the husband and wife in nearly every situation. In fact, I would have a hard time deciding which I liked more. All her girlfriends are real, intelligent, down to earth, fun people, and their husbands have a lot of the same interests. One guy is a auto tech and we worked at the same shop for a while, another is a really good guitarist and amp building enthusiast; I play keyboards and on amps too. Another is a brazen intellectual who makes some of the best conversation ever, and loves to cook and eat great food. All of us have kids around the same age and it's cool to see them growing up together.

I can just see him back on his forum posting his dislike of you!

Your not going to like everyone you meet. But it could be someday your going to have a heart attack and he is going to operate on you.

If this is your biggest problem this day then be thankful for all you have.

Usually sports is the common bond for guys, but I usually ask about other interests.
This was one conversation with the husband of my wife's friend:
"So what hobbies do you have?"
"Watching sports on TV."
"Great, but do you have any interest in other things?"
"I like to watch sports on TV."
About that time he realized his house AC had quit. He had no idea what to do, and asked me for advice. I said, "Lets watch some sports on TV."

I have a few good "Garage friends" but many more guys I know who just aren't into that kind of stuff, which is just fine with me.

Of course I don't limit myself to just garage related hobby's either so that helps in talking to guys who aren't into that kind of stuff.

Last week I had to go to a work function with the wife, I do not have much in common with your typical hairstylist but I made conversation with a few of the guys and had a good time (free booze helps)
