If you just want to warm up you dogs- make a bed with a heat lamp (or two) over them. Or mount a heat lamp on the roof of their doghouse. That's a lot cheaper way to go. It works well, too.

Like Gary mentioned, insulation ? Any thing you put out there is going to be about worthless without insulation.

If it is insulated, I'd suggest an electric oil filled radiator. It should be reasonably safe with the dogs out there.

Yes it's insulated but it is always cool out there. I have a small one of those radiators from home depot but it don't heat it very good.

My wife has two in her 20'x20' building. She uses one that is set on medium and it keeps it at a very comfortable 65 degrees. If it gets down below zero like we had last week, she will kick the second one on and it will be 65-70 in there. And her building has concrete floors with nothing on the concrete, plus her building is out in the open so it gets hit with cold from all four sides. I did build it with 2x6 walls and we have R19 in the walls and R30 in the ceiling.

My garage is 28' x 36' and I have a 45,000 BTU Hamilton hanging heater. I went with the Hamilton from Carter Lumber because it was cheaper than a Hott Dawg and other brand name heaters. Mine runs off of propane, and I have a 120 gallon tank sitting right beside the garage. If I went with a bigger tank, the tank would have to be at least 10' away from the garage. If it stays around 20 degrees, the propane last me a little over a month, if I am out in the garage every day and when I am out there, I keep it around 70 degrees. When I am done for the day, I drop the thermostat to 50, and rarely does it get down to 50 overnight. My garage has 2x4 walls, 8 1/2' ceilings, and R30 insulation in the attic and R13 in the walls.

Just picked up a 175000 Modine gas unit for my 33x44 garage withd 14 ft ceilings for 200 and all it needs is a thermostat and the vent deflectors are missing already pre wired and put a gas line in during construction. I think if you have gas something like the ceiling mounted units would be the best option

AC Wholesalers has had a 'daily heater special' ongoing this week. I got my mini split system from them this spring. Might be worth looking.

I recently found my perfect garage heating solution. A patio radiant heater, about 144,000 BTU if I recall correctly. It doesn't take up much floor space, it's quiet, it's fast & efficient, uses propane, warms objects (keeps your tools and parts warm!), and even has a small adjustable shelf to keep tools within reach. It raises the temp in my 2-car garage (10' ceiling) from 35F to 50F in about fifteen minutes. After that, I set it to low and even turn it off. 20-lb cylinders last an adequate amount of time in my opinion. The radius of warmth is impressive. Come Spring, I'll move it outside to get it out of the way.
