Yes it will. You need to make sure you have a ventilation gap between the insulation and the underside of the roof. You also want plenty of vents at the bottom and top of the roof. This will cause a natural draft above the insulation and save your roofing material from the build-up of heat. Done properly and you will notice a huge difference.

1 1/2" would be better and you need enough venting area to get airflow. That is usually the problem. Not enough flow and the heat has to go somewhere and reducing your gains.Would a gap of 3/4" be sufficient?
