Hello Garage Journal! I am new to this forum but not new to garages as I love garages! I am lucky enough to be re-doing our garage from scratch including placing a new door, flooring, walls and everything. I need your help in lighting! The contractor is placing 6 recessed light in a space for a 2 car garage, but that is obviously not enough. I saw some LED 4x2 panels? Please any help, advise, suggestions from you guys is greatly appreciated!

2 car garage lighting. The first thing to consider is ceiling height (which you have not provided).

The lower the ceiling, the more lighting fixtures with fewer lamps should be used. You want to having the lighting sources spread out, to minimize the potential for lighting to come from sources behind where you will be standing or sitting, and to minimize the amount of light that might be blocked by tall things (e.g. SUVs and trucks) in the garage. The taller the ceiling the more opportunity for light to be dispersed and reflected. Pay attention to the reflectors used in fixtures, as these focus light, reducing dispersion. Bare tubes without reflectors maximize dispersion, but may lose light to lighting areas which you don't need or want to light (e.g. ceiling).

The work areas also need to be considered. You want your work areas lit from above to minimize the potential for working in shadows.

If you want light while the garage door is open (for example working on a nice summer evening), you'll need to factor this into your lighting plan too.

I just put 4 8 foot 4 bulb T8 strip lights in my wife's 2 car garage and we love it! I had recessed lights and halogens and hated them. I was so happy with it, I put 12 of them in my 30x40 shop and I could not be happier with the lighting. I just used the cheap box store strip lights with cool white bulbs - if you are roughing in the boxes, it looks a lot cleaner placing the boxes under each individual light. The two car is 8 foot high and the 30x40 is 10 foot and both work great.

The required amount of light depend on the area of the garage and the ceiling height. you also can replace the recessed fixture bulbs with more lumens bulbs.

Agree with the above post. General lighting, go buy 4 eight foot, 4 lamp, T8 fixtures in the color index of your choice.

Good advice. I really like T8 bulbs. They are efficient and put out good light.
