My garage is 24’x24’, with nearly 13’ ceilings. There are 4 ceiling electrical boxes on a common switch. The boxes are in a 18’x18’ square, so 6’ feet from the closest walls.

The garage is used primarily for parking a car and kids toys for now. Eventually, as kids toys (ride-ons, wagon, bicycles, etc) dwindle down, we’ll park two cars inside. I plan to do a wall of storage cabinets on the wall opposite of the garage door. Long term, maybe a car storage lift. For that reason alone, I want ceiling mounted fixtures for maximum clearance. I will use the space for cleaning/detailing our cars, so I want it well lit.

My question is how to evenly light the space with fixtures. I assume 4’ LED fixtures will be the way to go. How many, layout, and recommended fixture advice would be appreciated.

While I’m asking questions, is there such a setup where I could have 8 or more fixtures, but only have 4 of them on, when maximum light isn’t needed. I can post a layout picture if my description of the space doesn’t make sense.

Not that it really matters, assuming fixtures don't have to be right at the boxes, but your math isn't working for me:

24' - 18' = 6' / 2 = 3' from each wall
or
24' - 12' (6' x 2) = 12' square pattern

Your usage runs from one extreme (storage) to the other (detailing). To achieve both and maintain as even light distribution as possible you might want to consider 0-10V dimmable fixtures (which require you to run low voltage wires from fixtures to a dimmer).

My apologies. The ceiling boxes form a 12’ square, in the 24’ square ceiling.

So dimable fixtures were a thought, but I couldn’t find many, except these:

They seem to be a discontinued model that has good customer reviews. They have their own remote control for each fixture, so no additional wiring needed?

Would 4 of these be sufficient at their claimed 4800 lumens? I currently have 4 standard 60w equivalent bulbs lighting the garage now. Their light is barely sufficient.

Brian,

Check out the sticky on the top of the thread. Platonic has generously posted hundreds of lighting designs for dozens of garage dimensions, and 24 x 24 is common.

Good luck.
