Having several well placed fixtures is what reduces shadows, not lumen output.

I was joking, but that makes sense. Here is what it looks like. The shadows show up much more in the pictures than it does in person. How does it look to you? This is my first lighting project so I ha r no idea if I ended up with something good from a shadow standpoint

Dude looks awesome. Congrats on your diy work! Great satisfaction knowing you saved a $1000 for install by taking it on yourself! I was contemplating only 2 rows deep for my own but seeing yours, they really do provide good lighting and minimal dark spots in the gargage!

@kroc0005: thank you. I am really happy with the way it turned out as well. It felt good when they all turned on at the same time.

@Platonic Solid: Suhweeeeeeeet!! Now I just have to stop myself from going to the garage for no reason other than to turn on the lights.

I still have some outstanding questions that probably got lost because of my wordiness that I will list out in case someone can answer them.

You did a great job documenting your journey in words and pictures. And for those that chimed in to support, kudos to you all as well - that was as meaningful to the effort too.

Two questions I was still hoping to get answers on are my extension box and whether or not I need straps on a few runs of conduits.

Extension box: there is a very tiny gap between the extension box and the round light box in the wall. Is this acceptable?

Conduit runs between 52 and 58 inches: There are four conduit runs that are this length. Do I need to put a ******** each of these runs? The lights and conduit seem solid the way they are.

Thanks again.

Appreciated your thread, thinking of going your route as well.

Where I may differ in implementation is that I may end up with 3-5 fixtures' wires connected in parallel from the existing round ceiling boxes that are centered half extender and emt over to them depending on how I do the layout. I figure using a wirenut to connect two wires together is no big deal, but does it scale to 3 or 4 or possibly even 5? Mostly it's for looks to have some kind of uniform emt pattern on the ceiling.

Did you look at the colored emt from Allied at all? Been thinking about blending in with the ceiling paint color (white), or having an accent color that matches the garage gear.

Glad you enjoyed it!

If you have the correct size wire nuts, putting five wires together is not an issue. Pushing the wires through the conduit was easy as well. However, standing on a step stool, stripping the wires, managing to route them, and holding them all together was more challenging IMO. So if you could get away with routing less wires, I would totally do it!

I wasn't aware of the colored EMT, very cool. I think I would of stayed with the metal colored EMT in the end though for the same reason, I like the look. Looking forward to seeing what you pick.

I would probably caulk around the box just for looks otherwise it's fine.

The conduit needs to be strapped max 3' from the light and no more than 10' between straps.

Thank you! Knocked it out while the kids were napping today. I ended up putting a ******** each of the conduit runs that were greater than 3ft between lights.

Just double checking; the short 2ft runs between lights do not need straps, right?

Yeah I agree. Just wanted to make sure the enclosure was ok. I am going to wait until I figure out what I am doing storage wise. Then if the box is out in the open like it is now I am going to make it look prettier.

Also, another amateur tip :). I was having a hard time wiping the pencil marks off of the conduit with a towel and some cleaner. Then I starting using an eraser until my wife came into the garage and said, “why don’t you just use a magic eraser”. Duhhhhhh. The magic eraser worked like a charm!
