Not sure if this the place to post this or not. Recently I've binged on lamp making. Everything and anything that can be made into a lamp is vulnerable at this point. I think these lamps would work well in a garage or man cave. In recent years I've decided to get back into making things after a long hiatus due to raising kids and building a career. I'm finishing abandoned projects and ideas that have been floating around my head for decades.

First up is the Drill Lamp. Some of you may be angered by the butchering of a perfectly good electric hand drill. But honestly, there are millions of these things laying around out there being ignored. I've made a couple of these. The trick with the first one was wiring the lamp switch up to the drill trigger switch. The drill index, cherry base and coffee can shade finish the lamp off nicely I think.

Re: Garage/Man Cave Lamps Part #1

Very cool! I especially like the polished one. Nice work man.

I built this desk lamp for a friend using a valve cover and brake rotor:

Garage/Man Cave Lamps #2

My second lamp is made from an air pump off a AB **** offset press that was being junked. The rest is pretty self-explanatory I guess.

Garage/Man Cave Lamps #3

Alright, last one. This lamp has a bit of sentimental meaning to me. The gas can and license plates belonged to grandpa. I struggled with rolling the license plates but otherwise they just sit on a shelf. Now they are functional and I can look at them. The rusty old castle nut holding the shade on came out of a coffee can of nuts that sat in his shop. These creations along with the wrench displays I've posted in the Vintage Tool section will be part of my workshop/rec room when I upgrade houses in a year or so.

I recall reading akaLarry's build, I think it came-out great. These others also came-out neat. I certainly have enough stuff lying around that I could re-purpose.

I have one piece from a child's metal toy that I just cleaned-up, which I may now have found a purpose for saving it. I was thinking of using it for a wall-hanging, but this might be more-useful, though I doubt the wife would see my design 'in the same light.'

Not a printer. My FIL had his own print shop in the Chicago area. When he closed down 20 years ago I grabbed the pump. Thought it look neat but had no idea what I was going to do with it. It only took 2 decades to figure it out.

Love it! How did you etch the name into the rotor?

I'll post mine in a while... I have the bedroom small bulb wrought iron "chandeliers" from my other half and her brother's bedrooms when they were growing up, and grabbed them for the shop... and when we first got hitched, visiting the family, and going for holidays, looking at that chandelier... we just sold the house, and I wanted a few memories of mom and dad's place...

Not just good times... the BEST of times!

On the old drill did you take the drill motor out??

No I did not. Both drill chucks still spin. Everything is intact except the original wiring. Bearings are newly greased and the insides are cleaned. I wanted them to be as authentic as possible.

Not something I made, but a lamp that was hand-made by an employee at my wife's (former) employer, in-honor of her 41 years of service to the company as an electrical engineer, one of the first hired. I'm very proud of her.

We both just retired, me for the second time. I'm busy every day, and she is too.

Awesome lamps, a lot of cool ideas. I have a Briggs and Stratton from the '50's that I would like to use for a lamp.

I made this lamp from a kerosene lantern, and a wooden pulley. The worst part was wrapping the cord. I used nylon rope because I couldn't find hemp rope.

I have the same lamp, it was given to my grandfather when he retired from Westinghouse as an EE.

Using an analog utility meter is apparently a popular end-of-career item to receive. She told them that's what she wanted, and when the guy who made these for retiring employees died before she got hers, they had to find another employee to finish the lamp. It turned-out great.
