Between 705 & 1200 SQ/FT Garage rebuild

7 years ago o bought my house and was super happy with the garage, finally a place for me to work in, i put a barrel stove in, and was happy.

2 years ago the roof started leaking, the F250 didn't fit through the garage doors, and my project cat didn't fit with the hard top... Planning started, it went from raising the ceiling to tear it all down and start over, back to raising the ceiling again.

Anyway this is what I have:

25x31 size, ceiling height is 8ft, garage doors are 9*7 and everything was in general need of some love

Since the roof would have to get higher, the chimney had to go, it was leaning away from the building, and just took a light tip from the tractor to topple over.

I found this guy living in it


Last weekend was deconstruction day..



That was fun but apparently the garage was built better than i thought, it took a bit to get her naked

Btw the only picture i have from the inside, normally it isn't that empty, but i knew i was going to rip her apart, so i stashed everything in the basement... Wife is not Soo happy about that, but she knows the garage is important to me

Then i started raising the walls by around 3 ft.. it is 3 ft because a 2*6 is 12ft and u get 4 pieces out of it

Oh, as you can see, the front wall between the garage doors didn't survive, it was too wobbly..

I have to hurry, the rafters i ordered a few weeks ago should be delivered this week, I'm not planning on installing them myself, i have enough work to do, so i will outsource that part, together with the new garage doors it will be the only part i outsource, the rest i do myself with the help of some friends that know more about construction then i do.

Oh and God bless the inventer of battery powered nail guns, i bought a Milwaukee framing nailer for this project and it's awesome!!! Saved me Soo much time!

Finally ready for the trusses, can't wait for it to see how it's going to look. Only thing I can work on until the trusses are up is the garage door opening frame and pretty up the block work.

Well the trusses were delayed, they are supposed to arrive this Thursday.... I hope, i need the garage ready, got to fix the tractor, side-by-side and my car, and do maintenance on the truck... Seems like everything is breaking at the moment

Probably not, but.. its still a possibility.. I'm just worried that the lift be in my way since the garage is pretty small

If it was me, I would be beefing up that 'post' you made between the garage doors. The verticals should be doubles at least or there will be some unwanted movement over time. Just a thought since you have time.

Since you are dealing with Concrete Block, I'd be interested in seeing how you frame the door openings for the overhead door tracks. Tell us about the fasteners.

If it was me, I would be beefing up that 'post' you made between the garage doors. The verticals should be doubles at least or there will be some unwanted movement over time. Just a thought since you have time.

While I'm no engineer, the Header looks pretty substantial, and similar in size to what a 16 ft door would use.

They will be be getting a 2x10 on each side for the garage frame, but it's not a structural post, the header is a one piece, the post is just to attach a garage door to it

While I'm no engineer, the Header looks pretty substantial, and similar in size to what a 16 ft door would use.

One big door was originally the plan, but it was simpler to do 2 doors.

As far as framing, i will frame this out with 2x10 to get the right opening size.
I will use glue and some tapcon screws, originally the frame was also glued and nailed, and it was a pain to remove, so i will do the same ( expect i don't like nails)

You aren't half assin it, are ya? Looks like good progress and a good plan.

Trying not to half-*** it, kinda hard since that's my standard process when I'm trying to save money.

I'm still trying to save money, but the garage will be like i imagine it, no matter what it costs, even if i run out of cash and have to pay with credit card, the garage is forever, debt is temporary...

Anyway, 1 day after delivery of the trusses, the Mexican crew came and put them and the sheeting up for 900$ + 100 beer money.

Also ordered the garage doors, should arrive end of next week or the week after, so next week is framing the garage door openings

Here some pictures, I'm really loving it, it feels Soo much roomier with the higher ceiling.

Not making progress as fast as i would like, I'm working on the garage door framing, and decided to farm out the shingles, so those should go up next week, this weekend i plan to finish the door framing, and enclose at least 1 side of the gables.

Still slow but got some more progress.
Garage framing is finished, and ready for the doors to hopefully arrive next week.still need to close 1 gable next weekend, but i got 3 sides weather tight.

Still been busy with the garage, I did squeeze in a few das of vacation, but generally I'm working every day on the garage.


I'll post some inside pictures later, but I got everything rewired, got some ceiling fans installed and I'm using the garage. For emergency projects, since I am neglecting everything that's not an emergency so I can focus on the garage.


Anyway, I got the rear finished and one side, here is a picture, I love it more then I expected.




The windows in the dark grey cinder block wall will be replaced with new white windows and the gutters are also still missing.


October is outside finishing month, I am almost finished with siding the second peak wall, and this weekend I should be working on the front side and maybe finish it

Because there will be a small apartment in the second floor

Then next Saturday gutters and Sunday will be lazy day where I will spend the day on the sofa drinking beer and watching movies....
