Eric,

Do you think the shop is brighter now with the new lights?

The old picture shows how much the station has become now. When did it last operate as a Mobil station? I can see the motto “Mobil Lubrication” on the front wall.

How warm does your new third bay stay now after a year? Do you keep the door open or closed to that portion during cold weather? I believe that is where the JD tractor lives.

Thanks

Yes, appears to be way brighter than before. I'm also going to clean the dust/dirt off the old bulbs/ backing plate of the other fixtures. That should help too.

It became a Shell station in the mid seventies I believe. After that, nothing major label.

Addition stays plenty warm. With a single heat duct and well insulated, it does fine.

After being sick this past week, I got some time in the garage yesterday. This was all basement project work.
Drilled out some holes in the angle iron and used some good ol Rust-Oleum paint. . . never fails. When you want it to dry fast, it takes forever. After 4 hours, hanging above the wood burner, you can see my fingerprints.

KIMG0353.JPG

Anchored twy beans together for a removal of a section of the basement wall in the future. Five 1/2"x 5" Lags.

You might notice different fittings on each end. The right side has a longer brass fitting for black poly pipe. The left is a shorter PEX fitting to get crimped after the hose goes on.

It got mocked up on a piece of plywood and a few straps.KIMG0352.JPG

Then to the basement, our old creepy cellar as the wife calls it. I'm tee'ing into the line that goes out to the garage. I should have done this years back with all the work I have done done there.

I've found that Rust-oleum will stay soft for as long as it's warmer. Get it hot for an hour or two, then chill it for the same, and seems to harden faster.

Sounds like a plan but I have used the same can and other times, it drys quite fast, hanging in the same place.

No pics but I cleaned the lights on the woodshop side of the garage. They were just as dirty but more wood dust than gritty dust.

I posted these saw horses in the new tool arrival thread a couple of weeks ago.
KIMG0358.JPG

Honestly, I bought them for one project in the basement. Here they are set up at their shortest height.

These include 2x4 mounts.

So every few years in the Spring, I find this spot in the driveway that looks like a tree. It seriously comes and goes. You can see it some times and other times you can't.

I've always thought, must have been a tree in the driveway at some point or whatever the hell is this ???

Since it has rained a fair amount lately, I put the backhoe on the lil Deere and got busy.

Then I remembered that picture I posted up last month, shared by my neighbors brother on FB, when their family owned it and it was a gas station.

Yeah, a great utility pole... someone just cut off and buried it up.

The only thing I can figure is happening is, the frost is heaving it up to the surface where I can see it.

As Spring rolls in, along with the rain, the driveway is soft. When I back out of the garage and pull in, I'm driving over it. Doing so, pushes it back down just below the surface.

KIMG0391.JPG

I'll need to get a few tons of stone to top coat the driveway now.

What else have you found while digging around the property?

There’s a thread here on GJ about “what’s the most interesting thing you’ve found on your property” or something similar. The light pole should be a candidate.

Oh yeah I forgot about that thread.

When I put the addition on and tore up the driveway on the other side, I found more junk.

So last week I was trying to get things ready to mow and needed to change the oil in the push mower. Unfortunately, unlike the older stuff, this Briggs doesn't have a drain plug in the bottom but I did pull the blade off to sharpen it.

It was during the same week I stumbled across what I felt was a deal. I've been looking at a larger 2 series John Deere utility tractor.

Like my smaller 1025R, I wanted a TLB and I thought would have been to trade in the smaller one for the larger one. Since I have been doing more at my parents house, which includes 17 acres of woods, I considered a grapple for future use.

I almost fainted last fall when I was told the price of a 2038R TLB at close to $43K. That's about 20 large more than I paid for the little guy. I came up with the idea of buying used or an insurance job off Copart and fixing it up. This is going to be used in the woods so it doesn't have to be perfectly pretty. So I looked.... and I looked....then looked some more.

I came across this. Screenshot_20230404-151309.png

That's a lot of hours. . . .

at that price might as well pay the extra 4 for a new one...
Sorry, at work and didn't get to finish.

That $43K was for 2022. What the ad shows, isn't just a TLB. What it includes is a grapple plus 3rd function and valving. That's a $5K add on.

I had the salesman price out a 2023 2032R, tractor loader backhoe (TLB) with grapple and 3rd function valving. That price was about $53-54K. Like everything else, pricing has gone up.

I bought pictured above for $36K.

Looks to be in good shape…..200 hours is about 100 hours a year? You had the hydrosplus on the 1025, if I recall. Did that help with trade in?

The JD dealer was about 2 hours away so I made a road trip up to look at it and work out a deal. As you can tell from the post above, I got it for two grand less than listed in the ad. After a week of waiting for the dealership to work something out on their side, I got the call to come get it.

The wife was kind enough to take a day off work and go with me. We made a day trip out of it, crappy weather and all.

I found out, my 14' dump trailer is a bit small... I had to put the bucket and grapple in the bed of my truck.

Once I put it in the garage.

I didn't trade the 1025R in. It has the mower deck for the yard and the wife said to keep it. Since it's paid off, she said it stays.

However, I think I might try to sell the back hoe off of it.

You got a good deal, very nice setup with all the extra's. If you passed this one up by the time another comes along, prices will have more than likely gone up again. Looks in good nick, a little dent like that doesn't matter.

I've got the side of my smaller bucket bent worse than this one, so I'm fine with a little dent.

I'll be making a chain hook for this bucket like I did the other.

Congrats on the new JD, and that really isn't a bad deal at all with all included, it'd be a great addition at my place. ;) I have been eye balling backhoes for a while now and just haven't pulled the trigger, I have a feeling once I get one I'll wonder how I ever lived without one though.

I also waited to find a grapple tractor, mine is smaller but the ash trees keep falling. Your back will thank you for the grapple! Nice tractor!

There's an upfront cost buying one but just having it and not needing to borrow or rent one makes it nice. I can use mine anytime the need arises.

I'm to the point in life where I just buy a tool when I need it. If I borrow one and break it, I have to replace it. I could have bought it for myself.

Probably the most important thing, it beats the hell out of a shovel.
