Eric, I like the lever handles. Nice to be able to open the door with a knee when hand(s) occupied carrying treasures or covered in filth.
Yes Bob, exactly why I swapped them over many years ago. When the youngest daughter moved back home, she carried our granddaughter along with a bag and whatever else. The main goal was convenience for her but I soon swapped the one on my garage door so when "I" carry stuff in.

I open doors at the fire house the same way, with my knee.

This is the old air pan I have had on the car for 25 years. It's going to be a touch too tall.KIMG1597.JPG

In it's place will be a new air pan that is going to be slightly wider. This will allow it to take full advantage of the openings for the cowl hood.

Just starting the layout..
KIMG1596.JPG
I'm going to round off the front corners and use 1" foam rather than 1 1/2" foam. The wife picked up a roll of foam from Jo-Ann fabrics.

Made a drive and a couple of pulls through first and second the other day. New air pan appears to work good.

Car has been starting a little hard and grinding when starting. I believe the starter is getting week. So I broke out the spare factory starter.

KIMG1612.JPG

I tested it and it spins.. but doesn't kick out the gear.

Not taking a chance with a race four hours away. I made a trip to Jeg's for a new aftermarket Tuff Stuff starter.
KIMG1611.JPG

Also grabbed some heat wrap to protect it from the heat of the headers.

Oh that new intake looks really nice, when you finish the passes share your times, I bet that car is pretty quick.

JB
This new intake is a TFS piece and it is 1/2"-3/4" taller than the current intake that is on the car, Edelbrock Victor Jr.

There's going to be more that gets done with the intake before it goes on.

The car is fast for a street car but there's plenty faster cars out there.

How fast do you want to go, how much do you want to spend ?

I completely get that, I certainly don't want to spend the money it would take to the fastest person out there even in a street class. My cobra is a ton of fun and pretty darn fast, but I know there are hundreds of cars in my area that are faster. Oh well, still fun to play around with.

One of the best things about your Cobra is it's weight... like nothing compared to even a stripped down (but full interior) car like mine.

At race weight with me in it, we're right at 3200lbs and half tank of fuel.

Mine is heavier than most from what I've been told, the new engine and trans didn't help that but with me and a full tank it is 2,500 lbs, it really is darn fun. I hope you are able to build one as you are planning.

Eric, what's your RPM going thru the traps?. At 3200lbs and making decent hp (obvious with the mph) I'm surprised your 60 isn't in the low 1.5 range. What size tire are you running?

Cam, it's about 7K going through the traps.

I need seat time, more than anything else. The car needs a a little bit of tuning..... It's me.

I swapped out the front tires for a 26" taller tire from a 24.5"tire. That has helped.

The swap to 3" exhaust has helped... working well with the bigger 850 carb.

Like I said, it's me and practice launching the car. Last year it was 1.7-1.8 60' times. I struggled.

I have a ClutchTamer to put in the car but I am working through everything as well. I just put a positive clutch stop in the car the other day. . . That needs tested and adjusted.

I'd like to get everything working together completely before it goes in.... just try to keep too many variables out of the equation all at once.

Basically dropping .15 out of the 60' for now on the first trip to the track, I was pleased. I took the plug out and put the power valve back in... I think (hope) I'm close to where it needs to be.

I did have one 60' that was a 1.57 but I screwed up the shift afterwards. I know the car is capable... it's the driver.

Oh yeah. 26.0 x 10.5 MT ET Street radials.

Ya that's a lot of changes to vet through. Not knowing where you were at thru the traps I thought you might be leaving some gearing on the table and little shorter rear tire might help (if even possible). But you've made really good improvements, that's for sure!.

I've been trying hard to make sure I'm going in the right direction this year. Even if progress is slow, I'm good with that, because I know it's moving forward.

Car is back together, might be making a trip to the track tonight. Just need to check on any plans with the wife.

Forgot to throw this picture up. Here's the new starter all wrapped before it went back in

KIMG1625.JPG

I have to admit, the new starter spins the engine over, sooooo much faster.
I had a new starter put on my 04 Powerstroke 4 months ago, and was shocked at how much faster it spins over, I didn't even think it was bad.

Mine was spinning slower but this engine has more compression than the old one.

As something changes slowly over time, most don't notice the difference.

I'm glad I swapped out the starter.

So the end result to the night of Test and Tune wasn't good. After the rain delay and running the slick tire cars down the track, we got to make our passes.

I was happy with the 60'. 1.61 and then I missed the 1-2 shift. I got right back in it and went 11.91 @ I think 120.

I need to look at the slip for the mph to verify.

As I got to the slow down area, I had no oil pressure but it was running and not making noise. I shut it down and walked back to the trailer. Got my buddy and 4 Wheeler.

I'm glad I swapped out the starter.

The same happened with the battery in my truck. Haven’t been driving it a lot and apparently the battery was weak. It would take a couple of spin to start the engine but it would start and I didn’t think anything was wrong, just the typical 6.2l I thought. Went out today and all the truck did was click. Checked the battery and it was dated for 2017, so I just called interstate battery store and made sure they had a group 65. $210 after discount, cleaned terminals, and it starts so much quicker. Was kicking myself that I didn’t just change it sooner.

So after so investigating, it appears that my issue is either the oil pressure sending unit, the gauge of wire between.

I hooked up a mechanical gauge and tried to spin up pressure with the ignition off and had none.

I was worried it being worse. I picked up a 1/4" deepwell socket and key stock to build a new oil pump primer.
KIMG1630.JPG

As a temporary fix, I used a long extension taped on and a drill. This time I got pressure on the gauge.

As a precaution, we cancelled our hotel reservation and won't be going to the Michigan race as planned.

As I mentioned our night getting worse..... I went with a buddy of mine and his son. Unbeknownst to me, his whole clan came up to watch and stayed for our first pass after the rain delay. They went home and got there safe.

Since I was done, I loaded up the 4-wheeler and then the car. Justin got called up for his second pass.

His car is an '89 ( I believe) Mustang GT with some Cobra ground effects. A 302 with iron GT40 heads. It has Procharger with intercooler at 6-8 lbs of boost. Like me, Justin has been trying to launch the car for a good 60'.
Last year, he bought a new helmet as he was going fast enough with the blower installation and over the winter, they added a 6pt roll bar with seats and 5 way harness. Last month, to get tech'ed faster than a 11.49, he had to buy a single layer jacket.

So as he launched on his second pass in the right lane, he had a clean launch and hit the one-two shift and was on a good run. We watched from the stands. We could hear the third gear shift. Then.... the veered across the lane into the left wall careening back across the track into the right wall.
His Dad and I got down to the other end, Justin was still in the car with medical and track crew tending to him. He was alert and oriented. I gave his Dad a thumbs up letting him know that he was fine.

The car wasn't. It's totalled.

Eric, so sorry to hear of Justin's accident but so glad to hear replaceable parts were the only things totaled. Not to mention the cage and helmet timing.
Yes Bob, just replaceable parts totalled.

The car is on the trailer and sitting in Justin's garage. Hopefully, the drivetrain is intact.

His Dad is already on the search for a new car. I sent him a link for one and he was was going to message the guy about it.

That is tough to see, sorry about the wreck, but glad he is just fine otherwise. Any idea why it lost control?

JB
Even though the track crew said there wasn't, we believe there was some anti-freeze on the track.

We do know there was some on the return road.

Doesn't really matter, the track isn't liable as everyone signs a waiver going in the gate and it's an accepted risk going down the track.

Made a run up to Summit Racing today for a new gauge. Switching back to mechanical.

Also going to do an oil change and grabbed a set of header gaskets for the trailer.KIMG1634.JPG
Those are the same style of header gaskets I installed on my camaro. I got one heat cycle on them now and I'll retighten them soon before I crank the camaro up again.

What's your reason for going mechanical for the oil guage?
