Thanks Cam ..
People think we get paid too much... I tell people we get paid to deal with stuff so you don't have to.

Went to a CISD about a week and a half ago.... without any details, it was interesting to listen to the young PD officers and how they took the call....I've seen a lot for a small town department. I told them, it's not a person anymore, it's just a body....treat it with respect but just a body.

Dark humor.....it's a real thing, it helps but many would probably be seriously offended if they heard it.... We have to deal with it, cope with it, live with it and keep going...... Business as usual.

I have a bit of a dark but true story on this one. I had a friend who got sucked into a sandpaper rolling machine that was rolling 4 grit. Found out later that his employer had disabled all the emergency shutoffs because they didn't work right and he didn't want to pay to fix them. Anyways, he got sucked into the machine after his hand got pinched, whole body was wrapped in the roll like a dead body in a rug before anyone could get over to shutoff the main power to the machine. It broke most of the bones in his body in the process. It was pretty brutal looking.

Paramedics showed up and it appeared to be a DOA. They cut the roll open and while they were preparing to extract his body, he breathed. The one paramedic had a break down on the spot and had to go sit down. They had already processed it as the just a body category, and the shock of that lump of flesh needed to move back into the person category took a minute. They saved his life and he made nearly a full recovery minus strength in certain ranges of motion of his left arm.

Eric, I agree, I don't know how you guys deal with the stuff you have to see and experience, that takes a whole different kind of person and one who is stronger than I am emotionally. I would have a hard time compartmentalizing those incidents and think it would mess with me mentally and emotionally.

Damn, that is a rough stretch for sure Eric! Appreciate your guys service and take care of yourselves. I know I couldn't see that stuff without it affecting me. :(
It can be difficult, especially for the younger guys/girls. We have no females but two young females on the PD we work on a regular basis. When I saw young, I mean younger than my daughters, born after I started on the FD (or were in diapers) or less than 5 years on the job. I've talked to a few of them, off to the side when no one else is around.

I'd rather not see one of them lose it and have to walk away from a good and promising career.

One of the attempted suicides we went on was a GSW with a Mosin rifle. . . 7.62x54R. . . big bullet. Dude was sitting on the edge of the bed when we got there along with a PD officer. I asked where the pistol was and the officer said, rifle, it's out there in the hallway. Like I said, sitting on the edge of the bed, a pool of blood on the floor between his feet, arms at his side, hands across his open lap. I bent down and looked at the facial damage. . . :scared: and thought, this is bad. As EMS arrived on scene, we were talking about how to move his down the stairs from the upstairs bedroom, he moans out. . . Leave me alone. . . Dude was alive. Mosin was so long, he basically missed. The round when through the bill of his hat, through the ceiling, and next shift, we drove by the house. You could see where the round traveled up and out of the standing seam roof and kept going. You just never know what you are going to arrive to.

Mike, I used to have a count of the GSW suicide and hangings that I had went on. I could tell you almost every call I was on during my career. There comes a point where calls, days, weeks and everything becomes a blur. About the only thing you never forget is the smell of a dead body.

I don't try to talk to much about it here at GJ, but I know there are other members here involved in LEO, Fire and EMS. I try to avoid the details as I don't want someone to get upset but at this moment, this is my thread, so I feel I can talk about it here a little more.

I notice a couple of those missing the swivel heads on the ends of the threads. Did you remove those on purpose? If you have them for reinstallation, how do you get them to stay on and still swivel? I am asking because I ran into the same issue on some clamps I bought used.

They were missing when I won them on auction. They are going to live on the welding table so I am not seriously worried about them.

Besides, I can tell they are cheaper clamps and the smaller ones of the lot...if they fail in their duties, they will get tossed in the scrap bucket.

First cleaning and oiling of the threads on the clamps.... I'll let them sit a few days and hit them again. I sprayed them with penetrating oil after the wire wheel.

KIMG3118.JPG

Still have some dirt, grime and rust between the threads.
You’re going to love the two large clamps furthest from the camera.
Over the years, by haunting the used tool places in the Detroit area, I picked up a wide selection of the drop forged clamps. One store in the late 80’s used to sell them for a buck an inch, or less.

Part of my collection (photo for insurance purposes)
After using the really good clamps you won’t want to use the cheapies.

Thanks for what you do

@NUTTSGT , my new job has me out in the field talking to a lot of fire departments. Yall see some heavy stuff. I have been party to many gsws, stabbings, od, drownings, all manner of mvas, but being first on scene is a lot different than being in the ER. My new job is working with EMS to promote 4 hospitals in my system. I love it so far and its nice to be able to lend myself as a resource to some of these folks as a way to unload some of the burden of things they see. Its not part of my job, but something I offer if needed.

We used to have a Doc in the ER, a good doctor but didn't care much for the fire/EMS crews. . . kind of a I'm above you guys type of attitude.... Then one day he was involved in an MVA himself. It took a medic criking him in the field and a full recovery for him to realize what Fire/EMS does for patient care and what we see.

From that point on, he had a different point of view about us and talked to us like regular folks. You knew if he paid you a compliment, he truly meant it. Over the years, in Trauma "A", he told me twice "nice compressions" while we were doing CPR during a code.

@LXCam just a heads up. Test scores came back, three of us Lts took the test, all passed and the scores fell how they fell. I came in second, so the guy that got 1st will get promoted probably next week. When next summer rolls around and the other Capt retires, I'll pick up Capt.

The #1 guy beat me by one question on a 100 question test. If we would have tied, I would have gotten the nod as I have a spot on him in seniority.

Way to go Eric! 👍

With that potential coming up in short order. Any chance you’ll go for a chiefs position before you call it quits?

How much time in the DROP program will you be a Captain? I know every little bit helps plus the pension at the end.

I'll be in DROP just over 3 years when it happens. At the 3 year mark, I will be getting 75% of my contribution rather than the 50% I currently receive.

It's a max of 8 years on DROP and the last two years are 100% of my contribution.

So I will see about a $2/hr raise and 25% increase of my contribution when (if) I get that second bugle. Our contribution is based on gross, so the more OT a person works, the more goes in the DROP.

Congrats on the promotion. Im curious do Lts drive in your dept? My former dept the Engineer or slang "operator" drove for the Capt. I heard some depts the captain is sorta like a BC. are you a medic or EMT?

for your kit did you compress the spring at all? I put 2.5" spacers in my F250 5-6 yrs ago. I remember it being a pain in the ***. To get the springs back in we had to lower the radial arms on both sides. Compress the springs and use a pry bar to get it back in. It was pretty sketch.

I started to compress the spring but knew it was going to take a bunch and really wasn't keen on the spring compressors I have. To lower the arm, I would need a porta-power or small bottle jack, I disconnected the sway bar end link but that was about useless to do.

When I put the leveling kit on my F150 years ago, I think I used some ratchet straps to collapse it the little bit I needed to gain. I'd like to compress the spring in place if I can, I think I can get away with less compression that way. I need to do some research on headlight adjustment when I do attempt it again.

We run a 6 man shift, Capt, Lt and 4 FFs. One shift does have an extra FF as one came back from deployment. The Chief hired a FF back in August to replace a retirement from July. As far as where guys ride, there has been some controversy and animosity in the dept as to some decisions made on that. . . . not from the hands of the Chief either.

I'd rather not put it out here but I have my opinion and the guys on the department know I feel and not afraid to state my opinion when asked. I don't go along to get along, nor am I afraid to the play the Devil's advocate. However, ask me why I disagree and I can give you the reason as to why I do. I prefer to look outside the box.

I have no issue being known as the department ******* and I have this decal on my helmet. The Chief has never asked me to remove it.
1759601446344.png

All the old guys are EMT-B and on DROP. The older guys (middle of the pack) and young guys are all Medics. We started hiring Medics back in 2002 for the future of the department and take over EMS for the City. We took over EMS duties back in 2020 which had previously covered by a private EMS company. In doing so, we upped the staffing from about 12 to 18. Through attrition, we lost 3 (from 15 to 12) and the city never replaced them nor did the last Chief try to uphold the staffing.

As a Lt, I drive the 2nd out squad but currently been riding the Engine. I have been running the shift as the shift Capt retired back in June/July. Depending on the staffing and which shift I am filling in on, I may drive the Engine.

Eric,

Amazing how the DROP programs are written in every jurisdiction. When my Dept started the DROP, it was 3 years at your base salary. Three years and you were retired. Now it’s up to 5 years max.

I’m glad I did the program and have retired. I miss some of the people but not any of the grieve.
When it started in Ohio (Ohio Police and Fire) it was 3 years minimum and max of 8. They based your retirement on 3 year average and soon changed it to 5 year average. At that time, DROP changed to 5 years minimum to get your money and interest.

You can leave whenever but don't have access to the cash until the 5 year mark and lose you interest. It has stayed max of 8 years since it's inception.

When I mentioned 3 years average, that means a 12 month period, not calendar year. The pension board does the calculation but I did a quick calculation using my high 3 years gross on payroll. I was off from their calculation which was beneficial to me, nor was I going to argue.

When I sat down down with the pension board my pension was $XXXX.00, when I finally "retired" and went on DROP the final number was $500/month higher than their estimate, a nice surprise.

I know for some following along, it's hard to understand but this is from OP&F website.

OP&F’s general investment consultant, Wilshire, presented a performance review as of June 30, 2025, at the Aug. 27, 2025, meeting. The review shows a gross return of 14.46% for the one-year period ending June 30, 2025, which places OP&F in the top one percent of peer plan sponsors in the U.S. Strong absolute returns in gold, midstream energy infrastructure, U.S. equity and non-U.S. equity contributed along with the strong relative performance of OP&F’s U.S. equity and non-U.S. equity managers vs. their respective asset class benchmarks.

OP&F’s portfolio is valued at $20.16 billion as of Aug. 26.

Not that it matters either way but I "bought" three years military credit/service time. My out of pocket cost was ( I don't have the numbers in front of me) was about $31K.
When the city sent the final numbers to the pension board to figure out what my "true" average was and what I would receive a month on my pension per my gross salary, which (for us) includes overtime, I didn't see an actual DROP payment for the first 6 months.

Once I hit that 6 month mark, I got a DROP payment and those previous months back dated. I had accrued more in the first 6 months in my DROP account than what it cost me to buy my military credit.
Whatever you may think as a financial wizard, it the grand scheme of things, I believe I saw a ROI in 6 months and also gained 1.5% extra of pensionable income.

I thought they were phasing out the ez pass transceiver units and going to coded stickers?
Don't know and can't answer that. I would guess if they are, we'll get them in the mail at some point.

However, I can say this, I really don't want a sticker like that across the top of my windshield if that is where it has to go.
