Re: garage refurb

This was last night, after it was all formed up, wire and rebar in.

The concrete truck can about 8am this morning, concrete poured and broom finished.
10132010garage006.jpg

I was happy the way it turned out, I even tried to make it look nice by brooming around the column supports.

A view from the road, can't really see much, but it'll have new doors real soon.

Re: garage refurb

I ordered 3 1/2 yards to make sure I had enough. I had plenty and kept saying to myself, "more?" We just kept forming up more sidewalks.

Next step, throwing some paint on the walls, which I'm dreading for some reason. :headscrat

Re: garage refurb

It's coming along well and ties in well with the house. I can't wait to see the final product. I know you can't wait to get into it and actually do some work.

Out of Curiosity, what is this thing in the lower right corner?
Yes I know my MS Paint skills are less than stellar

Re: garage refurb

Well, I'm making some slow progress, wish it was going faster.

I have part of the walls repainted. It's everything at standing level or what I could reach off the short step ladder. Then I moved up to the corner to get behind one of the speakers and trimmed it out.
10182010garagedoorpics001.jpg

Took the foil backed insulation off one of the doors, getting ready to take out the door and replace it.
10182010garagedoorpics003.jpg

Taking out the door turned into a nightmare. Square head nuts, all 5/16 bolts but some of the nuts were 7/16, some were 1/2 while a few were 9/16". While about half came off, the bolts just spun in the old wood door. Finally after about 2 1/2 hours, I got the door out. I cut them right down the middle to make it easier to handle them.

Then while I removed the old trim I heard a creaky sound, I tried to move but bam.
10182010garagedoorpics005.jpg
right on the noggin.

Re: garage refurb

Since I raised the floor level, I had to reframe the door openings.
10182010garagedoorpics006.jpg

Notice it's dark outside when this was taken. It was a long day, door reframed.
10182010garagedoorpics009.jpg

As I unpacked the doors, I noticed this panel.
10182010garagedoorpics011.jpg
I'm not sure if Wayne-Dalton will replace the panel or not. I bought these doors back in March and they have been sitting on the garage floor waiting on the floor to get done.

I don't have a pic but one door is up, today I will do the other door, hopefully it will go better. It won't get finished as I'm waiting on a piece of hardware, which was missing on the first door and borrowed from the second door.

Re: garage refurb

Nutts, just read this thread from the start. From what you started with to what it is now (even unfinished) is awesome. The house is beautiful. Very homely with just the right touches. Your vision and hard work to bring it all to reality is a credit to you. I will look forward to following this build all the way.

ps - The GT aint half bad either. I have a soft spot for that series 'stang

Re: garage refurb

I am hoping you are planning to retain the gas-station feel of the garage and will be successful in that regard.

Thank you. There were days I was so frustrated along the way, working on the house, I wanted to give up. The wife would tell me to take a break and that it would be worth it in the end. She has given me a ton of morale support, especially on "her" steps. :lol_hitti I told her one day, if just one person stops and say it looks nice, it would be worth it, there has been more than one compliment.

After the garage is back together, I'll get some more pics of the GT. I've had a few people ask for more pictures of it. I'll try to start a thread on it in the future, just give me some time.

I am somewhat keeping it the same, just making it more practical to me. Hopefully if we ever sell the place, the next owner will appreciate the work I have done and make it easier get the place sold.

Eric

top top effort!

both the shop and house show your skill, grit and determination - awesome!

Best

Shane

Thanks Shane, I've learned alot along the way. It's amazing what you can learn by reading a little and watching some home improvement on TV. Get some knowledge and then do some hands on makes it self satisfaction.

For what we bought the house and what we put into it, I feel that we can easily get back out of it. My time and what I have learned along the way is priceless but was well worth it and I try to pass onto others what I have learned, sometimes learning the hard way.

Re: garage refurb

Well, I haven't updated for a few days, atleast not with pics.

One door done.
10262010garagedoor001.jpg

and both doors done.
10262010garagedoor003.jpg

I bought a roll of coil stock the other day, now just have to borrow the brake to wrap the doors. I've been doing a few little things in and out around the garage. I have most of the trim painting done, so I'm going to try to roll on some paint tonight.

I've also been tryin gto figure what to do about the ceiling. I think I might be doing it sooner than originally expected. I wanted to do it this winter but since everything is currently out of the garage, no better time than the present.

Re: garage refurb

I have most of the painting done now. All that is left is a little trim work around the garage doors.

10272010garagepics002.jpg

I guess I'll paint the main beam after the ceiling is done. You can also see a box of coil stock waiting to be used.

I made my decision on the ceiling. i'm going with OSB like the walls. I picked up 18 sheets plus all the 2x6s for the new ceiling joists and a little R19 to keep the heat in during the winter and out during the summer.

10272010garagepics001.jpg

Those are 12 and 14 footers sitting there, hopefully most of them will be up Friday.

Thank you

Some skills maybe :dunno:, a slight bit more than the average homeowner maybe, merely by experience of doing stuff myself.

I refuse to pay for somebody to do something that I can do myself. It allows me to do more only having to pay for materials vs materials & labor.

Re: garage refurb

My ceiling pile is diminishing. I consider that a good sign. AS it dwindles so does the temp out in the garage, I need to get my wood burner back out there. brrrrr.

I put up all the nailers Saturday, it took me all day to do it myself. Up the ladder, down the ladder, move the ladder, up the ladder and back down the ladder.

11012010garageceiling001.jpg

11012010garageceiling002.jpg

Sunday, I took off part of the day, not to mention I had personal time that has to be used by the end of the year. I nailed in all the joist hangers and put the joists in the hangers.
11012010garageceiling006.jpg

11012010garageceiling007.jpg

Today, I need to nail the joists in as they are merely sitting in the hangers. I'm also going to put in the blocking too. Also included in todays plans, a trip to Menards for some new lights, and getting the wood burner back in the garage. That last item will include a chimney cleaning also.

Re: garage refurb

I got one of the most important things done today with winter coming.

11012010garagepics2001.jpg
The wood devourer is back in and running. I had to make a trip to town to get another piece of black stove pipe. This will make it more comfortable to finish up the refurb unless I get it too warm.

I also nailed in all the joists in the hangers and now have half the blocking nailed in also. A framing nailer sure makes life easier.
11012010garagepics2005.jpg

Also accomplished today was the trip to Menards for the new lights. The two things I didn't get done was cleaning the chimney, I'll do that tomorrow before I get a fire going in the wood burner. After that, I'll finish up the block and work on running new wire for the lights and removing some of the old ones.

Re: garage refurb

Blocking is done, along with cleaning the chimney. I've had a fire going the last few days, it's getting colder outside. I ran the wire for the new lights Wed before going into work. Yesterday, I took a break from the garage and didn't get much done.

Today, I was back at it and it was an itchy day. Can you figure out why ?
11052010ceilingpics002.jpg

Making prgress and getting a rhythm going.
11052010ceilingpics001.jpg

Finally finished, you can see the acess to the attic. I will make a door that will slide in place once the ceiling is done.
11052010ceilingpics003.jpg

Another view, there is a scuttle on this side too. It allows access to a vent door that is generally shut in the winter. It is also opens above the breaker box, incase of running new wire, it'll make it easier.
