Eric, you will soon discover how vastly your world just changed by having machining capabilities in your shop. Congrats. Looking forward to seeing them set up in your shop.
Thanks Mike, this stuff has been on the list for awhile, not just high priority. I've always kept my eye out, trying to find a good deal.

I lost out on this brake about 10 days ago. Once that auction was done and lost, I went to buy a 30" SWAG press brake, but it wasn't what the guy had listed. It was a 20" press brake and I passed on that deal. . . wasn't much of a deal. If it would have been the actual 30" brake as appears on the SWAG website ($800) I was scarfing it up for $450 but it wasn't. . . . . and yes, before anybody mentions it, the SWAG press brake and Dayton brake are for different work, I'm aware.

I usually get out bid. Once I landed the high bids on the tooling, it was a matter of placing bids on this stuff and winning the bids. I was watching the auctions and had the high bid on both for several days. Nobody tried to outbid the lathe but in the last 10-15 minutes, someone tossed a few bids in for the mill. I had to step up my game and figured if I was making the trip for one, might as well go all in and bid up the mill. Buy once cry once.

Between the taxes and buyer's premium, I'm into both for just over half of the new lathe cost. granted, I realize, they are used, the mill is a round column and I(we) have a road trip ahead of me. I reason it like this, I'm not buying new for what I'm using it for. . . . good enough for me. Again, something to learn on and we're not building rocket ships. The road trip is a short vacation and time spent with the wife, you might say quality time.

As far as setting up the shop, I still haven't finished the welding cart and need to get on that. I have a ton of tooling to sort through. I think I will figure out what will work for me and sell the rest. I believe I'm going to try to utilize the HF 56" cabinet to set the lathe on and see what happens.

Unfortunately, to be honest, I'm starting to run out of room. I need to get the golf cart running before spring when the enclosed trailer comes out of storage. It can go in there and I'll sell the Yamaha Timberwolf 4 wheeler. I'm hoping that I can spend some serious time in the shop this year. . . . just to get some things done.

Those lathe and mill should serve you well. My friend had the same or nearly the same models back shortly after we graduated high school that he put in his parents basement. For a minute I was wondering if those were his since they're in NE Ohio. We made a lot of paintball gun parts on those. Mill was pretty solid. Lathe took a little finesse to keep the chatter at bay in certain materials. Definitely not the precision and rigidity of a monarch or hardinge but pretty good for the size and price.

These are not them, these came from The University of Alabama.

Got back last night about 11:15 after leaving Sunday morning at 6:15. Last stop on the road at Buc-ee's for truck fuel and fuel for the body.KIMG3228.JPG

My wife hates this, but I'm the guy that will walk up to you while you are fueling up and congratulate you on a beautiful payload!
My wife would probably hate me if I did the same thing. Funny thing is, after I pulled out of the building after loading up and starting to tie it down and wrap it for the ride home, another guy showed up to pick up his auction purchases. He said something about it, I didn't pay much attention but the wife talked to him for a minute.

Apparently, he had bid on the mill (and possibly the lathe too) and told the wife that I got a good deal for what I paid for it. I guess that might have put the wife's mind at ease seeing and hearing from a complete stranger that I did well on my purchase. .. . not that see really cares.

What did it cost you to pay him off to do that? :lol_hitti

@LXCam just a heads up. Test scores came back, three of us Lts took the test, all passed and the scores fell how they fell. I came in second, so the guy that got 1st will get promoted probably next week. When next summer rolls around and the other Capt retires, I'll pick up Capt.

The #1 guy beat me by one question on a 100 question test. If we would have tied, I would have gotten the nod as I have a spot on him in seniority.
I found out last duty day,(Wednesday) that the time frame of next Summer is going to be wrong. The Capt that is due to be retiring June-August time frame isn't retiring at that time.

He's actually moving his date up and will be done in January. He's basically running out his accumulated leave that he has on the books. His last day on shift will be November 14th. I will get my second bugle in January rather than Summertime. Chief said he was ordering my shield and badge this past week.

Fortunately for the young guys, Firefighters, that means two of them will be getting promoted to Lt in January after their promotional exam. For those guys, he has to wait to see scores what on the exam before he orders badges/shields. We have our badge number incorporated on them.

Congrats on the early bump!

In doing this, I found a short section of Flexzilla house that I didn't know I had. It's perfect for the blast cabinet.

Next up is replacing the light fixture inside. I had already done some work on it but it has burnt out 2 fluorescent bulbs. I'll be swapping the fixture and putting in some LEDS.

I also put a couple more rivets in your trash can that I had drilled holes for the.

Congrats Eric.

At least your department makes notification about promotions.
I got a letter from thr Fire Chief being promoted to Technician (driver),
Nothing for Lieutenant or Captain, I did get a call from the Chief when I was promoted to Battalion Fire Chief.

Now they get a call and a multimedia blitz on Facebook on any kind of promotion/achievemnt.

Now you get another 6 months of adding to the OT and DROP accounts.

I came to work today to see the official notification for the eligible Firefighters that they are testing for Lt.

This is the notification we get to take an exam.

This is what is posted after the tests are done, Civil Service verifies them and the notice is posted. I was candidate #03.

So I picked up a new strip light for the blast cabinet and a pair of hybrid LED 24" bulbs.

I get the fixture out of the box and look at the knock out on the end .. WTF size is this? I'm not sure if my finger will fit in the hole.

Back it's going to go....I guess I will end up putting a new set of tombstones in the other end and try to remove the ballast.

If it's not one thing, it's another.

Could the knockout be sized for a hard plastic bushing, with a compression fit on a 16ga cord? That's how my cheap fluorescent tube fixtures were wired, but they came with wire installed at the factory.

Yeah, very possible. It would probably be "okay" in most situations but inside the blast cabinet, I don't want an exposed cord.

It does however have a 3/8" or 1/2" KO in the top of the fixture. I'm not going to put another hole in the blast cabinet, so that gets ruled out.

So I had picked up a pair of 24" T8 LED bulbs and decided to bypass the ballast. The bulbs I bought are hybrid, they can be used with or without ballast. So I decided to use it without the ballast since I had two bulb failures in quick order.

I started by replacing the tombstones on the end that had a broken one. Then removed the ballast...once that was done, I put in the bulbs. Then it was time to power it up. The lights came on and one went out as fast as it came on. This is the same side on the fixture as before..KIMG3249.JPG

So I figured enough with this fixture...done. I'm going to use the fixture I have mounted under the cabinets above the workbench.
KIMG3251.JPGi know this fixture has no issues.
