Re: garage refurb

Well, I hit a snag today. When I opened the first box, I found the Craftsman rollaway dented on one end. ugh ! Then I pulled out the other two and checked them out. They didn't have any dents but the quality. Oh my, talk about poor quality. When the drawers are opened, I bet they move back and forth 6-8 inches.

I made a trip back to Sears to return them. I also spent a 1/2 hour trying to write a review on their website but couldn't get it to work. hmmm.

Now, I'm almost back to square 1 deciding how to finish my benches.

Re: garage refurb

The wife and I made the trip to HF yesterday. We picked up some plastic bins for fastener storage. I took them out to the garage and thought about shelves for the bins for about an hour. Then today I started on the workbench. It'll still have about the same design I had planned on before but I decided to move where the fasteners will be.

Here is what I started with, some frame work for side bench. Most of the heavier work will be done on this side. It'll be beefed up with all 2x6s.

Then the back bench, the fasteners will be on the left side. On the right side will be an open area under the bench, giving me a place to sit at the workbench.
12292010017.jpg

This is an over all view. I have added some of the bracing for the top, but I will finish that on the next day in the garage.

Re: garage refurb

Now that Christmas and New Years are over, I tried to get back to working on the garage. But it always seems when you try to get something done, other stuff always pops up. It's all good, it was with family and friends.

I put all the cross bracing in.
01042011002.jpg

I just like the way this support turned out. It's where the side bench meets the back bench. I thought I better get a picture of it before I covered it up.
01042011001.jpg

The fastener storage will be here. I cut the dados in the 2x10, which will hold shelves with the bins. The 2x10s are screwed in place.
01042011004.jpg

Just to give you an idea what it will look like. (somewhat)
01042011005.jpg

Then I did get the ends enclosed last night after supper.
01042011003.jpg

Hopefully I can get more done today.

Are you going to put doors on this bench? I had a bunch of bins like that for hardware & they always ended up with sawdust, metal shavings & just general dust in them. I'm using some plastic Stack-on cabinets with drawers from K-mart now. I like them much better. They aren't as big or as strong, but when I keep the drawers closed they keep the **** put of the hardware.

I like how much better the garage is looking after all the work you put in it. Are you getting different tool boxes after seeing the quality?

The fastener storage will be getting some doors like the benches on the other side. The rest of the work bench, probably not.

I'm going to skip the tool boxes for the fastener storage and use sheleves and bins instead. They were only for storage of the fasteners and not actual tool stoorage. I have plenty of storage for tools at the moment. Thanks.

Are you only using two layers of those plastic storage bins? I'd hate to lose the storage area BEHIND the bins. Maybe put drawers in and put the bins INSIDE the drawers to utilize as much space as possible?

Re: garage refurb

When fully loaded I think the 7/16" osb will sag and cause you problems unless you
have plans for some intermediate supports of the shelves.

They are going on 3/4" plywood. I just stuck them on the OSB for layout and measuring them up. I'll post pics after while.

mdbeck1, I have a fair amount of storage. I might slide a few things behind the bins, not sure yet. I do need to clean out some junk and put less under the work bench, well, more organizing.

Nuts-- Fire up that wood stove, its cold!!

Hey, have you seen this.... a gentleman on GJ incorporated a viewing glass in his wood stove door. Click on the attachment, its pretty cool, I am going to do the same thing when I get my wood stove going in the pole barn. If you want to see more pictures of his setup, search Barrel Stove Kits here on GJ.

Trust me, that stove is burning down the forest every day that I'm home, whether I'm working out there or not.

I did see that thread and those pics. Kinda neat but I'd spend hours watching the flames dance. :lol_hitti

Re: garage refurb

I have all the bench tops done. They are 2 layers thick of 3/4" PT plywood. It took 5 sheets all together.

01072011001.jpg

I trimmed the edge with a strip of 2x4 ripped done to 3/4" thick. I still need to sand the edges off and make them smooth.
01072011002.jpg

After that was done, I laid out on the plastic bins I had bought. There's about 90 bins total.
01072011003.jpg

They will fit on 7 shelves of 3/4" plywood.

Re: garage refurb

The added some strips to hold the bins in place.

01072011005.jpg

01072011007.jpg

As you can see the plywood is used. I bought it last year off a guy in Michigan, 7 bucks a sheet and pressure treated. I used the other sheets when I put a new floor in the other side of the garage. I'm now out of that great deal.

One the glue has dried, I'm going to hit the edges with an orbital sander, and glue them in place. I think I'll paint them in as I put them in, it might make it easier.

Even though I'm using two different size bins, I made the spaces the same size. If I decide to take out the red ones and buy more blue bins, I won't have to make any changes other than swapping out the bins.

Re: garage refurb

Basically the work bench is done, atleast for now. I will put some doors on that cover the fastener storage area but that can wait.

I think it came out pretty good and I am happy with it.

011011001.jpg

I added a shelf behind the bins for some "unseen" storage.
011011002.jpg

Here's what the bench looks like with some black paint.
011011003.jpg

Since I had the black paint out, I decided to make a change to one of the walls. I guess it would be more like making some symetrical. I painted the vertical support for the beam to match the other side. I had a coup[le of spots where the blue paint (stripe)had run onto the gray and looked like ****. So I just covered it with some black, problem solved.
011011005.jpg

*If you look close, you can see my minor mistake in the first picture.*

:bowdown:Great remodel/refurbish/upgrade work! Subscribed

To paraphrase Paris Hilton - "That's (five alarm) HOT!"

Quick question, now that you have the shop pretty well buttoned-up with the lowered/insulated ceiling and new doors, have you noticed less fuel use in the wood stove compared to previous winters?

It's definetly taking less wood to keep it warm, there's no doubt about that. I have to be careful because it gets to the mid 70's out there rather easily. I need to do some updating as I've got a little more done.

Re: garage refurb

Ok, sorry for not making any updates. I haven't made much progress lately, just doing some small things.

Here it goes.

I hung the TV back up, I forgot how easy it is to get distracted watching TV in the garage. I added some PVC over the all thread and painted it black. I wasn't sure how raising the TV up would work, since the benches got taller.
1282011001.jpg

I spent a few days hanging banners, pictures and signs back up. I tried to make every thing look neat. I even washed the dust off the banners.

1282011005.jpg

I have a bunch of pictures of the Mustang from racing at different tracks. You can also see the Kuwaiti license plate I brought back from Desert Storm. Typical car guy, join the military, go to foreign countries, meet new people, kill them and take their license plates.

Re: garage refurb

I sorted out all my fasteners and added some to the bins. Some get pitched as there was junk in a few drawers. I also started buying some more bulk fasters at TSC.
1282011002.jpg

I made some doors today for the fastener storage. I decided to use OSB as most of the plywood on the rack was warped slightly. These are 5/8 OSB.

1282011003.jpg

Added some ripped 2x4 as trim like the other doors I've made in the past.
1282011007.jpg

Then they got a coat of black paint. You can also see the new paper towel holder getting a coat of paint.

Re: garage refurb

clever w/ the shelving behind the "bins". At first, I thought a waste of space, but now you bins + long storage. Good one to steal. - Brad

Wow, Great work! I just read the entire thread start to finish, so from my perspective, your entire garage build only took about a half-hour.

Re: garage refurb

Thanks for the nice words guys, it makes all the hard work worth the effort.

The shelf behind the bins was nothing more than a piece of 3/4 plywood left over. I just put it to good use. I'm sure It'll hold plenty of "almost" nevr used stuff.
