For those that didn't know, your gloves can get soaken wet while fighting fires and freeze in the winter.

***** trying to pull a pike pole or hook with "ice armored" gloves, doesn't it?!? :D I usually end up wrapping my gloved hands around the exhaust pipe on one of engines for a few minutes to melt them back down. Temporary relief at best.

Just finished reading your thread all over again. Started it a long time ago and hadn't made it back. GREAT JOB! Can't wait to see more projects.

Looking good! Bet you can't wait to finish this part up. The idea for venting looks like a good one. I know my garage gets super hot and one of the problems I have is lack of venting.

Great job on the garage rebuild - you've inspired me to blog my own experience about my garage build. I recently moved here to Nerk, Ahia from SoCal and dealing with the colder weather and humidity will be and has been an experience. My 1930 house came with a small carriage house which isn't big enough to pull my truck into - so a pole barn is in order.

I spent 2 1/2 years in southern California, 29 Palms MCAGCC to be exact. I thought about staying out there but I prefer Ohio much more.

Welcome to GJ and most definetly start a thread on your build when it starts.

Re: garage refurb

Well, I do have an update. It seems lately, that I have been taking some time off work and not getting much done as the rain has started to pick back up. When it's nice, I've gone in worked some OT.

Thursday, I took off half the day and got the front porch roof shingled. It was a PITA to do, because of the pitch. You can't stand on it and I didn't want to jack the roof, something about putting nails into new shingles that bothers me. I did borrow an aluminum plank from a guy at work.

Here's a shot closer up, you can also see the front step in the picture too.

Re: garage refurb

The front step is a place of interest for now. It's too low for a proper step and rain water tends to run to it now that I have the apron poured. The foundation is somewhat hateful looking, not really bad but it does need some work. I decided to fix the problem now, before the siding goes on.

09112011garagepics004.jpg

A rotary hammer makes the job easier than an 8lb sledge. I'm planning on forming it up and pouring it tommorow, weather permitting. I have to do a few errands in the morning, including getting some more stone and another bag of portland cement.
After a few hours of work, the step is gone. I have noticed a spongy spot in the ground, I believe I need to dig a little bit of dirt out before I put some stone in.
09112011garagepics005.jpg

I'm not sure exactly how I'm going to form it up. I've thought of doing a small "deck-like" porch in front of the door, extending over to the closer 4x6 post. I guess some measuring will be in order be forming up to pour.

Re: garage refurb

NUTTSGT, not to make more work for you, but from what I can see from your pictures, you might want to do some more excavation/investigation. It appears that the base of your bump out is crumbling or failing due to freeze-thaw cycles; yes? Have you considered digging out around that bump out and making a wrap of sidewalk tying in the sidewalk you poured (on the right) earlier all the way around to the stoop/porch? That might give you the chance to beef up the building curb, and curtail the spongy situation between the stoop and the bump out. Are you planning on digging some piers to prevent frost heave in front of the door? That nasty winter weather in Ohio may have taken its toll on your buildings foundation. Sorry, if I'm seeing more work for you than is actually the case.

You really are bringing that building back to life, keep up the good work!

Good eye and you understand what I'm up against. What you suggested is the plan of attack. I merely broke and dug out the concrete step that was there. I know there is more excavation needed. I was on a time limit yesterday as I still had to mow the yard before I went to work at 7pm.

Vern, OSB is cheap and the black paint tends to hide the dirt. IMHO, it ends to add some contrast to the lighter white paint and it basically fits with any other color, kinda like wearing blue jeans. :lol_hitti

I do consider Norwalk my home track but I haven't been racing much the last few years. I generally try to race True Street events (NMRA,NMCA and the old FFW). I split my 302 block back in '07 and have had to pretty much buy everything new, including several pieces in my G-Force T5. We went to the Ford race at Norwalk last year with a stock engine and found the transmission still isn't right, it wants to lock up going into 3rd gear.
Between daughters graduating, working on the house, and refurbing the garage, the car has been set on the back burner. It might come out next year, depending whether or not I get laid off in the near future. :(

Re: garage refurb

Sorry, about not updating for a few days. I have been working on the garage but just not updating the thread.

When I last left you, I had broken out the step and was ready to pour a new section of apron or sidewalk. I also wanted to try to reinforce the front foundation of the garage. I added some rebar, tied to the existing foundation and apron. Right or wrong I don't know but I was trying to tie it all together. I also dug out the soft spot, I didn't go to the frost point but I do hope it'll help to keep it from heaving.

If you compare to the other pics above, you can see the concete came up above the bad spot in the foundation. I hope this helps or atleast out lasts me. lol

Re: garage refurb

Before I side the garage, I wanted to make sure there were no rotten boards underneath. I've removed the T-111 siding and resheathing it with OSB. I did have to replace a few pieces of the original pine siding underneath. It addes to the process but I know it needs done. I took care of the area under the windows and above the windows. I still need to rip off the old trim, check it out, replace it with OSB and retrim the windows. Once that is done, I can wrap the windows, which is a PITA. ugh.
09152011004.jpg

In case you're wondering, I chaulked the seams after I was done. I knew we had rain coming so I was trying to keep some of the water out.

Re: garage refurb

I had a goal set for today. I accomplished it, the yard is mowed. Oh wait, that's not it, but I did get that done also.

I wanted the porch lights done. That goal was finished about an hour ago. After mowing the yard and crawling around in fiberglass insulation running wire across the attic space, I wanted to get a shower. I had to make a trip to town to get some light bulbs too, so I stopped to BS with a buddy while I was in town.

I'm sorry but you'll have to ignore the motion light, I killed power to the circuit after dark and now it will be on all night.

09152011-2001.jpg

Sorry, I didn't realize that picture was that crappy and grainy.
09152011-2002.jpg

I doubt you can tell it by the picture but, the light above the left door is off center by a few inches, one of the ceiling joists for the porch was dead on center. Same thing for the man door. That light I went ahead and centered above the door knob. It actually looks centered between the 4x6 post and bay window.

That would have been nice but I had a Pizza Hut P'zone earlier and it was giving me some serious indigestion, my eyes were irritated by the fiberglass insulation and I was beat. All I wanted to do was go inside and take a shower.
I did manage to post the pics up after I got out of the shower and ate some rolaids. I waited for the wife to come home and took her out and showed it to her. She gave her stamp of approval.

I appreciate the comments guys, thanks.

Re: garage refurb

Hopefully this will work now, or atleast somewhat. I've been dicking around with Photobucket for the past hour and getting slightly pissed. Sorry.

I was working on trimming out the door and window the other day. I ran into some small problems as how to exactly to do it. I knew in my mind what I wanted to do but it took a few extra steps to get what I wanted. As I have been doing this, I've had to rework and replace some of the older building parts.
09212011frontgaragepics004.jpg

As the sun set, I couldn't do any more for the day and figured I'd pick it up the next, unfortunately, the rain came.

Since it was raining, I started the other day putting up some soffit, as it was raining and I couldn't do much else. I added some blocking for the middle of the soffit to hang off of, which was mostly scrap pieces that's why there's a difference in material size.
09212011frontgaragepics001.jpg

I had the wife wash the baffles and trim rings for the recessed lights and then I hit them with some Krylon Khaki paint. It matches fairly decent for an off the shelf color. Today, I continued with the soffit since it was raining again. I also put two of the baffles/trim rings in.
09212011frontgaragepics006.jpg

I also picked up some 13 watt CFLs at the store to replace the regular incadescents that I bought last week. Hopefully these will look okay in the dark, we'll have to find out later tonight.

I stopped here today.
09212011frontgaragepics007.jpg

Before I hang more J-channel and soffit, I need to do a few more things. . . .

hang a new motion light, which I bought and painted this morning

tear off some more old window trim

replpace old window trim

resheet the remaining front exterior

wire up the motion light, which has to be done before I close up the soffit

Hopefully the rain will hold off tomorrow I can make some headway.

Re: garage refurb

It sounds a little bit like the "backup" isn't too reliable, NUTTSGT. You might consider a cheap USB drive and store all your important stuff on there as a backup. Easy to store in a fire-proof safe too (I'm guessing you might have one of those :)) Then you can upload straight to GJ and not worry what happens to the copy here. Just a thought.

The place is coming along nicely and should be great when finished. I really like that bay window in front.

Yeah it's not be co-operative today. I keep thinking about getting a memory stick just for that reason but I never buy one, it only crosses my mind at times like this. Heck, we have this mouse that screws up and nees to be replaced. it's been that way for a few months and still not replaced yet, one of these days.

Having the pics on photobucket allows me to link them elsewhere too, some sites don't allow attachments so for me it seems to have a photobucket account usually works ok. :lol_hitti

Re: garage refurb

Yeah, I hear ya - some other sites I frequent don't allow uploads either. The good thing about using Photobucket (or other) is that you can show higher res photos. They have a limit to the size you can upload here on GJ and its really small. My camera doesn't even go that low so I need to shrink them a bit. Its a pain sometimes too. There's no perfect world I guess.

Re: garage refurb

Ok, it's been a few too many days since an update. It has been like normal though, slow progress. The most important thing is I can see progress. I think a few other people have been noticing the progress too. Two of the deputies (the wife is a dispatcher and I know all of them) stopped by today, one this morning while running traffic who needed to use the bathroom too. :spit: Then this afternoon, another one stopped by as he was in the area. They thought it was looking good.

I finished up running the J-channel the other day before I went into work. I got to play with some angles so I practiced on some older pieces. I also finished the framing trim around the windows that day too.

Re: garage refurb

Before I finshed running the soffit, I had to run wire for a motion light, which in itself was a treat.
Well, not running the wire but the light. I figured the old light was about 9 years old and could be replaced besides one of the globes had rust on it. I bought one to replace it on sale. I threw some paint on it, let it dry and then realized it needed adjusted. So as I loosened up the locking nuts, it scratched the paint. I thought no biggie, I'll just hit it with some paint when I have it adjusted where I want. As soon as the paint hit the old paint, it crinkled and looked like ***. Being the new one was plastic, there wasn't many choices to fix the problem. I took the easiest and threw it in the trash.

I took the old one apart and bead blasted it, put it back together and painted it as it will hang. Problem solved. So one I finished up the soffit today, I hung the new light.
09252011garagefront008.jpg

Looking at where I'm at on this side of the garage, I think I'm going to make the soffit on the roof line look better. It'll take a little creative work as this has shingle on it but they will get replaced when I finish the back outside corner.

09252011garagefront009.jpg

. . . .and one more picture I took today.

Thanks guys. No pics to day but I did pour a step in front of the door. It was just starting to rain when I was finishing up. I covered it with some plastic in case it started to down pour and didn't get to take a pic.
