Funny how doors get too big. I had a similar issue, but fortunately the edges of my doors could be "ripped" 1/2 inch or so without a problem!

I know what you mean about being heavy. I just about lost one of my door standing it up!! Just finished my third and last door for my workshop. . . .

Well I did rip 1/2" off but it took more than just a swipe with a circular saw.

After mowing two yards today, (my elderly neighbors will be moved out and the house is already sold) and 3 hours later, I started back on the door.

You can see here, I siliconed around the J-channel to help seal it against the weather.

Since the door was close to clearing but not right, I decided to take a 1/2" off the hasp side of the door. The first thing I did was to mark and scribe a line on the coil stock. My plan was to remove just what I needed and try to patch the edge back in.

Then it was off with what I had to take off. Two more passes with the utility knife, pulled a few nails and it came off fairly easily.

Next up was to remove a half inch on the 2x4 trim, plywood and 1x4 backing. I set uo a piece of plywood as a guide. Notice those c-clamps, they were in the way and had to go. I set up some blocks under the plywood to hold it up and then screwed it down, in place.

I cut as deep as I could with my 18V saw using some wedges to keep it from binding on the blade. It cut through the 2x4 and plywood leaving the 1x4.

I grabbed the 18V Dewalt recip saw but apparently, I had a couple batteries that needed charged. I broke out the old standy, the Porter-Cable corded recip saw and then the orbital sander to clean up the edge.

I was ready to wrap it again. I was feeling optimistic and it was dark so I didn't test fit it. I bent up some trim.

Since it was going to rain tomorrow, atleast they are calling for a chance of showers. I decided to keep up with the optimism and caulk what I replaced.

I broke out a new tube of RTV, cut the tip and put it in my caulk gun. I started to lay a bead of RTV. . . . . . .


WHAT !!! You got to be fricken kidding me.

OMF'nG, I can't win for losing on this damn door. So here I am, the same spot I was about 24 hours ago.

I was trying to not say anything and have the door done and post pics of it. I will be siding it, the reason for the J-channel. I was just planning to have the door hung so I could finish it and post a picture of it from the road. Hopefully, it will all blend in and not be noticeable as people drive by. The door issues threw that plan all out of wack.

Guess I twisted your arm to post the details on the door then! Sounds interesting. I'd be concerned that if the door sags, that may mess up the field.

Everything sags as it gets older.

If it becomes a problem, I'll add a steel frame to the back side !

Sorry with my type-o as Yes it was PAGE 37 that I got to after enjoying reading the entire thread. It's addictive and really wanted to see how everything turned out. You've done phenominal work, especially think your concrete work is as nice or better than paid vendors I've seen.

Also, quality of the chimney is impressive and glad you point out the hangers that needed to be there for ensuring it didn't fall over (ie tie chimney to the building). Curious if there's any physical vertical connection up & down the chimney (ie steel rods up through the open space of cinder blocks), if any required?

Thank you again. The new floor was poured by us, my FIL and BIL finished it. They work commerical construction and concrete is one thing they do all the time. The apron out front, a buddy of mine and I poured. I finished that with a broom, well, bench brush. The sidewalks, I finished all them myself.

The chimney has has rebar in it and it was concreted in place as the chimney went up. Required, I don't know but it made sense to me when I did it.

Again, impressive workmanship on the chimney. With the clay, surrounded by sand, inside the cinder block, that is re-barred and cement together all the way up, that is one super well-built chimney!

Forgot one comment on cricket to steer water away from chimney, my carpenter brother has done lots of roofing and we re-roofed my house (original construction had none!) and used exposed valley tin in the two valleys on either side. That way it flushs out gravel, debris, or snow/ice that might build up on regular shingles. Same is true for normal valleys, in that valley tin helps keep roof clear, rather than just shingling both ways up to joint as leaves and debris collect there holding water. I'm a valley tin believer now and also learned that roofing tar is a good thing to prevent leaks for pipe covers, vents, etc (ie cheap insurance).

One more idea on big beam on top part of roof, maybe you could find nostalgic neon light with Ford, or Mustang instead of firehouse theme? Would be way cool to say you're the house with nice big garage and Ford blue-oval neon up on the roof!!

Keep up the excellent work! You're inspiring me to improve my garage.

I'm hoping that you will hang the door before installing the siding to get the horizontal lines to match...?

Thanks Jeff. The door will get hung before the siding goes on. The very first piece will need to get trimmed to match the lines of the siding already installed. The rest of it will be (should be) just hang and bang.

After that is done, I need to install some door stops and make a lock hasp. I looked for one but I can't find what I want.

Since we have been here, 12 years, I've painted it twice already. It's a PITA in my book. On the back of the garage, there was a whole rotted section which they used rolled roofing prior to the standing seam. There was literally no roof decking under the standing seam in a few spots. Where the roof line (left side of back roof) came down off of the main roof and met the vertical wall leaked under hard rain. That same roof line came down behind the small back room wall creating a dead valley where the water couldn't run out.

The standing seam needed to come off to repair the decking, I wanted to get rid of the dead valley and I can't do standing seam. The shingles I can do and it matches the house.

Standing seam should last forever if taken care of. There were spots on the house prior to reroofing it, that had holes rusted in it. The previous owners weren't much for home maintenance. The last owner was the daughter and SIL of that owner, the SIL actually painted the roof at one time with latex paint from Odd Lots. The newer baked enamel or epoxy coated standing seam is a different animal than the standing seam of old.

Since it rained yesterday, I took the time to get the siding cut for the door. That didn't take long, 5 minutes. I decided to start repainting the KIlz primer that I had done back in March. I had half a gallon and wanted to get it used.

Getting bright again

Here you can see the difference in color between the Kilz paint and primer that had started to yellow. That's not a mistake I'm proud of, live and learn.

Notice the shiny and dull white on the wall.

It was a decent day out, it would have been nice to be cutting wood but there was alot of rain yesterday. So I got back to the door.

It's hung, the door not me.

From the inside, it's hard to tell but I have screwed in the door stop.

A closer look at the door stop on the upper corner and the hinge holding the door on. I bought some long lags, that'll replace some of the screws.

I put some tar paper on the plywood to help protect it from the weather. You can also see the test piece of siding. I wanted to make sure the lines would match.

Yep, they match. I'm not sure why the lines of the siding appear like they do, maybe the lines mess with the digital of the camera ?

Yes, since the latch isn't done, there's a 4x4 holding the door shut.

I looked at a few places for a lock hasp that I wanted but couldn't find one. So I made what I wanted and I'm sure it's stronger than the stamped sheet metal one that I would have bought.

Starting with some 1"x 1/8" (maybe 3/16) flat stock.

I drilled the holes, then put a little heat to them and bent them in the appropriate areas.

Cleaned them and shot them with some primer.

Then with some paint, they were swing when I took the picture. lol

Looks like a nice, clean finish to the shed; well done!

The hasp, some weather stripping (to keep the bugs out), and maybe even some drip flashing on the jamb top and you will have some nice dry, secure storage.

Thanks, I'm planning on picking up some weatherstripping sometime. I was thinking about a piece of drip flashing as I still need to but a little flashing around the door stops. That wont be much but it should help keep the weather of the exposed wood and I can use some scrap coil stock.

That being said.

The lock hasp is on and the shed is secure, empty but secure.

I wanted to wait another week or so but I figured I'd get on with it. . . . . burn it down now or later.

The simple latch you've hand-made and painted to match color of siding also is great craftmanship.

Neighbors are lucky to have you living there. Can you take some wide-angle shots of whole garage/house from various angles?

Thanks, now that we havehad some rain,the yard is starting to green back up and look like a lawn again. If you notice the bare ground, that's an area that I have lowered after the siding was done. It was too high and the grass would actually touch the siding. I broke out the shovel and wheel barrow and dug away.

Sorry, I haven't done much. Just had things going on, raining, and windy. I worked inside today and covered up my glass block window. I get some natural light through it but was always cold during the winter. I figured it was a big heat sink.

Where I started, the flash wouldn't go off so looking into the window, it made it dark.

I had some left over styrofoam. 1 layer of 3/4" with the foil facing out the window, a second layer of foil faced rigid insulation and another layer of white stryofoam on the inside. All the foam was 3/4" and maybe a total R-value of 7-9 all together.

Then added a piece of 1/2" plywood.

Trimmed it with some 3/4" pine.

Finally caulked the edges and tomorrow it'll get paint.

What color do you think ? Black or white ? I'll be hanging my table saw blades on the plywood.

Looks like the beginnings of a handy, if somewhat shallow, cabinet. Some stout hinges, some deep doors with pegboard/shelves/racks and you've got decent extra storage. Years ago, I 'modified' a plywood, recessed, triple medicine cabinet that I tore out in a bathroom renovation and it made a very handy shop cabinet hung over my workbench. I used the same approach with the deep doors/pegboard and it became a great storage for my fastener supply and hooks for paintbrushes, short handsaws, files, etc., etc., etc.. An added bonus for your situation would be that the doors provide even more separation between the warm shop and the frigid winter weather.

Ha ha I considered adding some doors to it for a cabinet like storage area. I do have some pegboard I could stick in there, add some pegs to hold blades and such. Hmmm, now the gears are turning.
