Re: garage refurb

I must admit, this is starting to be a PITA. I think I have the stuff I need and start plumbing and find I need something else. I made a trip to HD the other night to buy some extra parts, covering what I thought, once again, would be enough to finish this project. I want a couple more 1/4 turn ball valves as I put an extra one in.

01262013airline005.jpg

As you can see, I finished the drop for the blast cabinet. Since it's regulated, I wanted to be able to shut this drop off, so I needed two valves here. What I had was a blue and a yellow handle valve, me being particular, wanted both to match.

Once I had the valves, I thought I needed a 2 1/2" ****** so I picked a couple up. . . then didn't use it. As I was finishing up the drop, screwing the regulator on, I dropped it. Like typical, dropping the regulator broke the guage. I can't win for lose.

Re: garage refurb

Still needing a guage, I plumbed on and wentaround the truss beam.

Going around the beam used up four 45° fittings and I think it came out okay.

As I stood on the ladder, I realized to go farther,I was going to have to trim the corner shelf speaker.
This is the right side that I trimmed up for the plumbing to fit.

The left side, well, can you see the problem ?

Re: garage refurb

Yep, I need to move some Romex. I've known I needed to move it at some time and just so happened, that time is now. The biggest problem is it runs across the wall and when I dropped the ceiling, it gets really narrow up in the attic space where I need to run new wire.

01262013airline010.jpg

I believe I can cut the OSB, drill through the studs and run the wire that way. I need to close up the gap shown, something I was going to cover up at some point. By cutting the OSB down and making the gap bigger, I'll just patch it in. After a little caulk and paint it'll blend right in.

If you spot the older white romex (12/2) it goes from the switch on the wall to the beam lights. It's time for it to get changed also. I'm going to move the lights slightly and close in the back of the I beam to make it a flush clean look. . . I hope.

Re: garage refurb

Hey Eric,
Nice to see your going the Black pipe route. Hell of a job your doing. I know the feeling of having to run out for one small item. I reached a point were i just bought handfulls of fittings. Figured i'd use them sooner or later.

Also nice your doing your own threading. I have a auto threader at work and do it all the time but i realized as i was buying just a few pieces at a time easier for me to just measure any piece i need out of the norm and had them cut it at HD. Saved me the hassle and the guys there thread well.

I started off taping the threads and then figured i'd be better off with the paste. Well most of the paste joints leaked and none of the taped joints did (probably the type i used) so i went back and taped them all. capped the system with a gauge and pressurized it. Only had a couple spots that i needed to snug up. I used soap and water at all the joints and couldn't find any leaks. I haven't fully completed it yet. I have one more short run along the back wall and then one more drop.

A good idea for leak testing is to cap and pressurize the system as you go along. Much easier to tighten up or resealing then doing the whole system at the end.

Keep up the good work.

Tape and no leaks but leaks with paste. ****, I'm screwed. I'm using a hand threader so it's not fast work here, I'm just taking my time and not getting in a hurry.

I would have thought paste would be less likely to leak as well. How could it do anything but fill the gaps.

Plus one would use paste on LP/NG piping, so wouldn't the problem be even worse (more dangerous) there?

Maybe dave67fd used some old paste?

You would think so.

I'd think that be true there also.

Could be or maybe something cheap. No offense Dave, some brands are better than others, but you think it'd all be the same.

BTW, I hate teflon tape.

Interesting. I'm using Oatey branded Great White. I've used it before with good successs, hopefully it continues. Maybe I should plug the system and test what I have so far ? :headscrat

I definitely agree with the "test more" for this. If you have a leak, black iron is not very forgiving and you'd hate to have to pull apart 15 joints just to fix a small leak.

How many disconnects do you have in the system to avoid breaking it all back if you wait until the end and discover a leak?

Looking good Eric. Plugging and testing before major directional changes or puzzle pieces is a good idea. I was lucky enough to obtain several salvage pieces of copper when I was still in construction. I got several joints of 1" and 1/2" new copper that had overspray on it. The fitters didn't want to use it and said it was going to get scrapped unless I wanted it. Pretty sure you can still see the black marks from my tires where I didn't waste any time snatching it up:D

Anyway, with that said, I would have ended up the same route as you had I not fell into the copper. And I too had PVC in my old shop and fought leaks CONSTANTLY. once you get it done, you will soon forget about the pita it is now and enjoy a trouble free system. Good work!

I'm not sure what paste I used, i'll have to look. It was brand new. I also used a few unions in critical areas so I wouldn't have to pull the system apart to fix leaks.

We used paste at my shop and had good luck with it. So i'll post up the name when I get a chance.

Probably not enough.

I checked it eariler today. I put a quick connect in regulator till I got a guage (picked one up at HD tonight) and a ******/valve at the end of the line. I pressurized the system and there were not any big leaks that I could hear.

Re: garage refurb

I started opening the wall today to reroute some of the wiring. I broke out the chalk line and the Dewalt circular saw and was happy to get a face of saw dust, well not really.

01292013openwall001.jpg

Once I had it exposed, I took the screws out of the corner piece of plywood. This was some of the first wall board that went up so I could hang speakers 10 plus years ago.

Re: garage refurb

I tried and pried but the plywood would come out. I cut the caulk in the corners but still not luck. :headscrat

Then I remembered that I had nailed the ledger boards over the wall when I dropped the ceiling. I figured it was no big deal since it was a cosmetic ceiling and not part of the laod bearing structure. So I broke out the Dewalt saw again.
01292013openwall003.jpg

I went and picked up OSB to cover the gap and box in the backside of the I-beam. I also grabbed some new black outlets to match the ones on the bench. This is how it looked when I came in for the night. The holes for the wires are drilled and the old wiring is pulled out/down.

If you're wondering about the clean 2x4s in the wall, that is where I closed in two windows after somebody stopped by and was snooping through the garage windows.

What kind of gauge did you get? I didn't think of just getting the gauge...I thought I would have to get a whole new regulater which had the gauge. Kinda like a V8 moment.:lol_hitti

I just picked up a HUsky branded one from HD. I just need it for the blast cabinet. Once it's set it should stay put and not changed about.

I'm going to buy some new regulators once I have the system done. The two I have right now are Campbell Hausfield and are rated to 150 PSI, my compressor runs at 175 PSI. I know the Rural King has a selection of Milton stuff so I will make a trip there.

YES!!!!! I made it to the end! Took me 6 days (at work) but I did it!!! Really enjoyed this "refurb" man. Took me a while, but I def learned a few things along the way so no time lost. I also split off on your other little project threads. Good reads all around! I must say it has come a long way and you have displayed great skill and execution. Your perseverance has paid off and you have one AWESOME place to hide and work on things. Again, good job and look forward to following from this point on. Good luck and most importantly, ENJOY!!!

J-man, glad you enjoyed the thread. I truly hope you were reading it while on break as I wouldn't want somebody to get reprimanded over a simple internet thread.

I'm glad that you have learned a few things as it makes me feel that my time stopping to take pictures and posting up wasn't a waste. Once again, thank for the kind words, they are greatly appreciated.

Re: garage refurb

The wiring is done, with the exception of the outlets for the beam lights. I'll finish them once the beam is closed in. I think I made 6 trips in the attic crawling across the rafters. I put new outlets in and used black so they all match. I do have one more to swap out but that one is on another circuit.

01312013wiring002_zps0b97d2a4.jpg

While it's not the neatest, it'll be covered up and I used 3/4 of the old wiring and the new I did run for the outlets, I left extra incase I need to replace something in the future. I also tucked a bit more fiberglass insulation in the wall. Between the dust and fiberglass, I desperately needed a shower when I came in tonight.

01312013wiring001_zps889933ac.jpg

Tomorrow, this will be covered up, caulked and primed, maybe painted depending on how things go.

The wall is covered and caulked. I had to add a little blocking in the corner for it to fit nice. If the caulk is dried enough, I might go back out and prime it tonight. :dunno:

Re: garage refurb

Not alot of progress, I did get the section I patched in primed and painted. Since I used oil-based Kilz, which stinks, I put two coats of primer on and did nothing else in the garage while it was drying.
The next day, I painted it white and touched up a few other places. I did also painted around the beam black which there is no picture of.

Another view, showing the corner a little better.

The corner shelf is back up, speaker back in place and I'm ready to get back to plumbing airline.

Re: garage refurb

Looking good, Eric!

Thank you sir. I expected to finish the plumbing tonight yet I hit a small typical snag.

I finished running the airline across the beam, putting a union in. You can also see where I trimmed around the end of the beam with some black paint.
I went around the corner with a 90, then ****** and a tee for the corner drop.
02062013airline005_zpse908cc28.jpg

I proceeded to plumb in the drop, with a tee for the quick connect and a valve for a drain. I leveled it up, put in some standoffs and straps to hold it in place. Then it was time for a full length section to run across the wall, an easy piece. This is when I hit the small snag, I only had 3 straps left. :dunno:
I must not have taken into account the straps needed for vertical drops. I'll make a trip to the hardware in the morning and pick up more, along with more black spray paint.
This is where I stopped this evening.
02062013airline006_zpsd283530d.jpg

Just another section, a 90 and the vertical drop will finish it off. ;)

Have you ever wondered how much gas we waste as a nation of DIY'ers going back to the hardware/paint/beer-liquor/lumberyard/whatever store because we either didn't estimate correctly, screwed-up a part, or just plain needed to get out of the house? LOL

NUTTSGT, don't beat yourself up about running out of pieces; we've all done it countless times! Very soon now, you're going to have a safe, solid air system for your shop.

I know I've made the extra rip one too many times. I try not to do it or put the extra off for the next day if I'm working. There are times if one of us needs something during the work day, we'll go out in the fire engine and get what we need.
I know it sounds like mooching off the city time but it does allow us to walk around stores and see what's been changed inside the store, check for blocked exits, missing/out of date extinguishers or closed roads that we weren't informed of.

Granted, I hate making a special trip to pick something up but I know what I'm saving doing it myself, more than pays for that fuel. Many times if I take a longer trip in the evening to Menard's/HD (25 miles away) I'll grab stuff for the next project on the list. . . . two birds, one stone.

Re: garage refurb

Yeah but, plumbing always takes three trips to the store. I dont care how well I plan ahead every time I do plumbing it is three trips or more. Last summer working on the sprinklers, each time I went back to pick up more stuff, new problem, shortage or a different piece, I would pick up a bunch of extra stuff in an effort to avoid a future trip. It never worked. When I finished I took all the spare parts back, the refund was over $100 and nothing in the pile cost more than $5.00.

I don't even want to think about the gas. I am lucky I have two big orange boxes with each less than 5 miles away.

Oh and I have been watching and you are diong a spectacular job on the building.

Thanks. I generally keep the extra stuff as not to have to make trips to town for an emergency repair and to have "stock" on hnad for repairs. . . . .

About a year ago, I hear a knock on the garage door, I open it and it's the neighbor's adult daughter. She said her mom was at work and an outlet was sparking. I went down with a couple of tools, shut the breaker off. I told her I would be back in a minute. I came back with an brown outlet and cover plate to match what she had in the house. She couldn't believe that I had the stuff to fix it in the garage

Not alot for tonight other than the thought that the plumbing is done, atleast making airline. I just need to do a few more stand offs and straps for the last vertical drop, add quick connects and a guage at the blast cabinet drop. Then I can test it for leaks and probably tear it back apart. :lol_hitti

uh-oh
This better. . . .damn PB. I switched to the new version and it wasn't showing the pic I just loaded up.

Since the airline runs under the conduit for the welder outlets, I need to plane some of the blocking down as the line tapers back against the wall.

Nice work... Again! Haha. I'm not liking the "new" Photobucket. I held off using the old version for as long as I was allowed. Oh well, time to get used to it!
