Re: garage refurb

You should know better than to set up a ladder like that!

Not trying to be an A$$, but safety first right.

I know but sometimes you have to get the job done. Once I was up top working, my weight is on the roof. I'm well under the weight rating of the ladder so I wasn't worried about it being at that low of an angle. . . . laddered are weight tested horizontally, atleast ours are test at the FD that way. I'm sure you noticed the ratchet strap at the bottom preventing it from kicking out.

Re: garage refurb

No problem man. I used this method while putting the siding/shingles up before. When I can't use the strap, I use the front tire of my F150. :D

You just gave me the idea for my repairs to the fascia. I hate heights. Your firefighting jobs are not in jeopardy.

Off topic a bit, but I hate climbing ladders around the house to work on stuff but never once thought or hesitated to climb onto the roofs of burning houses or 5 story warehouses. Something changes in me when the alarm sounds and I gear up. Any other time you won't catch me on anything taller than a 6' ladder.

Re: garage refurb

I got up on the roof today and pulled back some of the old metal flashing. Then I bent up a new piece to wrap the corner so I could put up some J-channel. Once the siding is done, I'm going to cut back that old stuff and cap it with some coil stock.

Getting this corner done allowed me to get back on the siding. I got to play the ladder shuffle today. Since my plank is only 12' long, shorter than the siding, I felt it was easier just to move the ladder. Almost done.

I started to permanently mount the conduit since the siding is almost done. I have one more strap to put on near the weatherhead after a few more courses of siding.

Re: garage refurb

Thanks ODIS, your compliments are always appreciated.

I reached one of my goals today, 88° and humid enough for the thunder to rumble, I finished the siding. :willy_nil

I still have to cap the top of the walls but after tonight, the temps are supposed to drop. I didn't want to be up on the roof when it was this hot any ways.

As I was putting up the last piece, the big rain drops started to fall but only lasted a few minutes. You can see them below. . .

A view from the back corner,

and one last one without rain drops.

Thankfully, the lines of the siding matched up at the corner.

Re: garage refurb

Not much to update but I did start to work on the top cap today. I did the other side up this far, about 20'. You can see above the weatherhead, it's not done yet.

Re: garage refurb

OH OH pardon my error in the last post. I stand corrected by myself. THIS is the correct way to use ladders.

Re: garage refurb

Is the top cap made out of trim coil or is it premade?

Nice work.

Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2

It's made of coil trim/stock. I screwed it down over the existing cap, which is part of the standing seam roof. That's the reason is merely screwed over it and "for looks" rather than completely redoing it with all new metal.

Re: garage refurb

DONE.

Well atleast the exterior siding project is. . . . . unless I make a change.

Here's the front with the top capped.

This is what it looks like up top on the standing seam. I merely covered the old metal up when I capped it. What I did was more cosmetic than anything.

Re: garage refurb

Here's an older picture for comparison as to what I worked on today. Notice the vertical section between the lower shingled roof and the upper standing seam.

I proceeded to cut off the old metal, frame it out at the bottom and add some coil stock that I bent with the brake.

Re: garage refurb

After cutting and cutting with snips by hand, about 36 feet of metal, I had this pile on the ground.

The finished product.

I placed screws every 12 inches because I was afraid that some of them may loosen over time. Some of the wood was not in the best shape, some was replaced and the rest was fine. If I were to replace all the wood, it would have entailed ripping off the entire roof and going way farther than I wanted to.

Re: garage refurb

In case you're wondering about my car trailer. I didn't need it for extra ladder height. The power company is replacing poles this week. The farmer down the road is going to three phase, so they are replacing several poles. In post #1367, you can see the new pole laying in the grass along the road. Since I live at the corner, have a nice big driveway and get along great with my local power guys (AEP, see them on "fire" and "wires down" calls at work), I moved it to give them some room to work and a place to park.

Looks awesome Nutts! Were you going to do anything with the front columns under the overhang? You could something decorative or just leave as is they still look good. Just curious..

I was going to leave them as is, well atleast stain them to match the front porch on the house. Since they have warped/twisted as they dried out, different things have been running through my mind as what to do.

I'm sure if I decide to do something different, the idea will pop in to my head one day, probably while standing in the shower.

Re: Garage Refurb

I think you need to put on an addition to the garage. You're running out of things to do outside.

The wife and I were talking about a certain '76 Trans Am* tonight. I told her if I were to buy it, I would have to add a bay on to the garage.

* 16k miles, all original except tires and battery. I'm not buying it and not providing anybody with any other details about it. :dunno:

And on to another project. . . .

I'll leave the guessing to you guys. (ignore the box of Pushmatic breakers)

Re: Garage Refurb

I'm game, NUTTSGT, I'll take a guess. It looks like you're getting ready to run TV cable and/or Internet cable from your house to your shop. Maybe too many fittings and not enough conduit, but the trench looks right. I just ran a cable from house to shop, myself.

House (finished late one night, picture not too clear; ignore septic line and check out conduit to left)IMG_0668 (480x640).jpg

Barn IMG_0617 (640x476).jpg

PS Looks like Vernmotor beat me to the punch. It was suggested that I run TWO of each cable since the underground spools were 500 feet, each, and I only needed about 150 feet. So, no string, but extra cable!!

I have 5 sticks of conduit not pictured. I decided to put an LB on each side of the wall to make the transition. The two smaller ones will be inside, while the larger ones (look better IMHO) will be seen outside.

I considered painting them a sand color to match the siding where need be. :dunno:

Re: Garage Refurb

Fortunately, I guess, the cables came out under the stairs in the shop and at the engineered truss level of the unfinished part of the basement. I don't need to make the inside look too nice; no LB's. Ran the cables through the trusses to the techie's boxes. IMG_0679 (640x472).jpg another late night finish and poor picture. . . . Only problem is that with the full duplicate of cables, I'm not sure which two at each end I'm using. Maybe the techie can ring them out. Gotta have modern conveniences in the shop. . . .

Re: Garage Refurb

You're running a conduit just for internet? Why not go wireless? You can even get a wireless repeater (bridge) if your current wireless is too far from that end of the house.
