I've heard of the 302's doing that but haven't ever actually seen one, but hanen't looked either. That is impressive, makes for some cool paper weights. Does the 351w have the same issues as the 302's?
JB

No, not to by the extent the 302 block does. It can handle a lot more power.

Eric, I just stopped by to catch up as it's been awhile and I haven't had to call on you for any help lately.

Thanks for sharing the trip down memory lane. I'm sure you are finding it hard to believe those pictures are from over a decade ago. Great job on all the reno you've done.........

Thanks and stop by the thread any time.

As far as help, I'm glad to help anyone out the best that I can, all they have to do is give me a shout.

signed up just to say your thread was a terrific read, wonderful documentation and thank you for sharing your experiences and stories regarding your shop's transformation. After marathoning your thread from the beginning, it is truly hard to believe that while your labors were across many years, I consumed it in under a week.

Ironically, while I am happy you are finally getting back to the purpose of this shop (your car!!) I would be lying if I said I didn't miss the construction side of things. Either way, congratulations on working hard and living the dream - and being an inspiration for the rest of us!

I haven't done much in the garage lately as it's been a little hot for me and having Bones out there prevents me from opening the overhead doors. Since nothing is pressing, I've put stuff off till it cools down a little.

Well, I started to plumb up the Flexzilla air reel I bought a while back. I took apart the air line after marking it's location. I used the circular saw to make several cuts and cleaned it out with the chisel. Then I added a ******, a tee and replaced teh vertical line.

I thought I snapped another picture but apparently not. I was trying to figure out the exact way I want to plumb it. I need to make a run to town tommorrow to grab a few things to finish. I'll grab a few more pics too.

I hear you load and clear about the heat Nutts. It doesn't make room for a lot of ambition.

I'll be curious how the flexilla works for you on the reel. I have three in my shop and two of them coil up nicely while the third one can not be "tamed". It just refuses to do anything but twist itself into knots. I might have to go to a reel to tame it.

I can work in the heat but since I have nothing pressing, I choose not to since it's my stuff and not making any money doing it. :bounce:

I already have a smaller Flexzilla in the enclosed plastic reel and it's been fine. I decided to go with a bigger reel for the other side and it'll allow me to reach outside farther to do tires without adding another section on it.

I spent a little time in the garage today before the grass finally dried so I could mow. Here you can see the 2x6 that I notched out for the vertical air line.

I made a trip to town and grabbed a section of hydraulic line to use for the flexible line between the hard line and reel. The Flexzilla reel came with a short section but at 5 feet lone, it was too long for my liking. The hydraulic line and swivel set me back about $15.

I still need to put some blocks and straps on the new airline and finish plumbing the other end of the Tee. I decided to use a Tee in case something in the future changed rather than a 90°. I'm going to make another short section coming out of the Tee, to another Tee with a plug on the other end. Then I'll put a short ****** and ball valve coming out the bottom, just gotta cut and thread some pipe.

Good luck with Bones!

Thanks John. He can really try my patience at times and then be just the most loveable turd. I guess it's part of that unconditional love that a dog will give you. No matter how mad he makes me, he helped through one of the hardest times in my life, for that he gets a pass and has already earned a special spot in my heart.

Hey Nutts, I just found your thread about 2 weeks ago and read through it all. You have come a very long way and I would consider you so much more than just "a hack with a hammer". I think you could better be described as a jack of all trades. I'm younger (23) but try the same approach with trying new things and figuring it out as I go. Also, I am just a stone's throw away from you in Upper Sandusky (closer to Kirby). I think I am going to have to make a detour on my next trip to the Sportman's Den in Shelby and at least drive by, if not stop in to check out your awesome garage.

My golden was the same way "Devil Dog" for the first two years I had him at times but a big lovable lap dog at other times

Then after 2 1/2 years, his true personality showed up. Very gentle, not a mean bone in his body. Loves any attention he gets. Very lovable.

Hi Eric,

I posted some comments way back on page 18 when you were just getting started and have just finished reading the entire thread all the way through... All I can say is Wow!:bowdown::bowdown:

When you look back at all the work you've done - as you yourself have commented about - do you ever wish you had just rented a bulldozer and started from scratch. (Sorry, I don't mean that to come across the wrong way.) It has been a tremendous journey to follow, but what a LOT of work!

I take my hat off to you!!! You have some amazing patience and tenacity to see this build all the way through and you have a workshop with a lot of character and history now too!

The work you've done is an inspiration!! Thank you for taking the time to tell the story!

Thanks for the compliment and yes it has been a long journey.

There are times I thought about making it all come down but that would require funds upfront. Doing it like I did, allowed me to do it in stages or as I had the cash. Many times, I forced myself to work OT to pay for stuff. I would use my HD card and get 6 months same as cash. I don't like owing money so I'd work the OT to pay it off.

Wow, Nice job.
Rough beginnings but I can see the old service station being the deal clincher :)
That's pretty cool :)

Since the weather hasn't been cooperating lately, I decided to make a small update to the garage. I've needed an outlet onthe outside for a while and getting the new enclosed trailer got the gears turning to get it done.

Since the breaker box in in this corner, no need to put the outlet somewhere else. Pop a few pieces of siding off, figure out where it's going. I did center it on the wall.

I got a little creative bending some conduit to fit from the box to the LB. My second bend didn't look as pretty as the first one but it still works.

Unfortunately, while putting siding back, I managed to break an edge and also poked a hole from a nail that wasn't in far enough. Fortunately, the couple pieces of siding I swapped out this Spring, I saved and were perfect for replacement.

Cover on and wired up. I used a GFCI outlet and put it on a 20 amp breaker.

I read page one and two way back when they were new and somehow never checked this thread again until now. I read the entire thing and want to say: You have done an awesome job on your property. I know how much work it is to post pictures too. Thank you for the education.

Thanks for the compliments. I myself have looked back at the thread and realize some of the stuff I have done and forgot about. I have also learned much myself. There's been many times I told the wife, I learn on the garage so the house looks better.... ;)

In the latest Menard's flier, I spotted some T8 LED replacements on sale for $11.99 2 pack. I decided to grab a few and swap out the lights that I always use. There are four 2 bulbs fixtures that I turn on when I go into the garage.

The old T8 lights which have only been up a few years. Notice the shadow on the floor in front of the fan.

Afterwards with the new bulbs, the shadow is harder to see.

I grabbed 3 more two packs so I could change the ones above the work bench area but I failed to realize something. Those three fixtures are 4 bulb .. . brain fart. I changed one of the out and I need to grab three more boxes but I already grabbed the last packs they had. I could go to the next closest store as their inventory still showed some in stock.

So these replacement bulbs work directly in older fixtures? I thought the balast needed to change. That would surely be handy to just swap out the bulbs.

These bulbs in particular state on teh side of the package that they work with instant on ballasts.

Here is a link to the Menard's page for them.

http://www.menards.com/main/electri...57357690414-c-7482.htm?tid=354541940022906553

taken directly from the description...

The most common applications for the GT-LITE 17-watt 48" T8 linear 5000K LED light bulb are direct replacements for 32 watt linear with instant start ballasts.

Cool! Nice to have tons of light. We need to start shopping for fixtures so that the barn can have better light rather than the 6 naked bulbs in there.... Alway enjoy your thread.

Since the bulbs were on sale, I decided to make a trip to the next closest Menard's and picked up three more packs of bulbs. This will allow me to finish up the fixtures that I use the most in the garage and since Winter is coming, might as well start saving money on lighting now. I'm not sure how long it will take to see a ROI though. . . 17 watts now vs 32 watts before.

The fixture in the foregeround has already been swapped over. It's hard to tell in the picture but it is somewhat brighter and whiter than the back too.

All three have been swapped out.

Like I mentioned earlier, small details now....

When I first set up the fastener storage, I thought it would be okay. Now as time has gone on, I have come to the realization that the small red bins aren't really big enough for some of the nuts and bolts.

This is what I started with...

011011001.jpg

I updated and bought some more more blue bins from HF. I should have bought something different and bought all the same size in the beginning but I didn't, lesson learned. What I have upgraded to now,

Eric, was thinking of doing something similar but afraid that the bins would fill up with sawdust and more, was planning on putting them behind doors to helpo keep that issue at bay. What's your experience on that front?

Cheers,

David

Generally, the wood done on that side is metal work, most wood work is done on the other side so sawdust is minimal if non-existant. When I swapped out the blue for red, I dumped fasteners from one to the other. There was a slight amount of dust in those red bins, just enough to see it and you could probably wipe it with your finger to see a mark. . . . IMHO, not enough to create any issues in the 6 years since I put them in service. . . .

Wow, it's been 6 years since I started this thread, boy does time fly.
