Hey Eric,

It's great to see you're all buttoned up on the outside of your addition. Looks like it's always been there!

Now, since all the work is indoors, it'll be so much easier to sneak out and get a bit done... with light and heat!

Kudos on a job well done!

As I mentioned before, I needed to move the attic access hole. I decided to keep it away from the garage door tracks all together but I side have to keep it on the west side. It's just under 4' on this side from bottom chord to the top chord on the trusses.

You can also see where I taped the joints in the insulation. Not sure how much it'll help but figured it couldn't hurt.

attachment.php

I won't be using this attic space for nay real storage but I figured now would be the time to get some power up there for some lights. Instead of a plastic or porcelain bulb holder I splurged on a couple of LED light strips. There will be two of them, they were $10 at Menard's. They will plug into the outlet and it's a switched outlet. If need be, I can unplug one of the lights if I need to power something up there. Since the main reason for the outlet is the LED lights, I put them on a 15A breaker. I think this might be the only 15Amp breaker in my garage.

Once Spring rolls around and I can get the dirt work done, it'll look like it has been there for a long time.

No reason to sneak out. The wife knows where I am at when she is home and during the week, she's at work.

Coming this November, we are taking over EMS for the city.....as of right now..... So my time in the garage may be limited until we get our staffing where it needs to be.

"Looking good, Billy Ray."

Thanks for the compliment.

Attic access hole and cover are done. Hung up a LED strip light in the attic space for lighting. I had 2 but after seeing how well one lit up the space, I only put one up. The extra light will be going in the actual attic that I store stuff in.

attachment.php

While I had it warm and was going to be working out there, I spray foamed the door gaps. I wanted to try to keep an eye on the expansion so I could cut it back or clean it up. I trimmed it up last night after it cured.

This doorway will get trimmed out in the near future before paint.

attachment.php

Started on the east wall hanging plywood. Bottom row is up with about a half dozen nails. I'll break out the framing nailer and finish putting in the nails once all of it is up.

attachment.php

I'm going to continue hanging plywood today on the west wall, then the south wall. Once all the lower course is done, I'll be ripping some sheets to fill the just under 17" gap for the top course.

looks warm and cozy in the new garage!!

did you also just move the attic access? did you need to replace the old garage door you backed into or were you able to fix it?

good luck with the job and stay safe and healthy too!!

It's getting warmer over on that side. I've been building hotter fires trying to warm that side up. Once I get the duct work in, it'll start heating up nicely.

Yep. moved the attic access. It moved down about 3 truss spaces.

The garage door is good enough for now. I think I'll use the new panel that I ordered for my garage on the house. Then take the house garage panel and put in place of the one I hit with the John Deere ROP.

That looks great!

Great progress and the remodeled attic entrance done!

:lol_hitti

Woo Hoo!

Thanks for the compliments guys.

I have a few thigs to do today but I think I might go get the primer for the walls. I'd like to prime/paint the top edge of the plywood before I hang the foil faced foam on the ceiling. If I don't go get it today, that means a weekend trip to Lowe's or Menard's. I'd rather go during the week day.

The other thing is the heat, if I cut in the upper wall, I'm not sure what I should do next. I'm thinking I need to go ahead and get the heat over to the addition rather than try to finish the walls/ceiling.

Looking really nice!!!!!!!:beer::thumbup:

Supposed to get some snow this weekend!

Yeah, and I'm off today, a regular scheduled duty day. I need to bring some more wood inside before the snow flies. But the weather report is why I considered getting the heat done next. . . . stay inside and work like a hermit.

Progressing very nicely

I would get the heat done next and then do the painting, it will dry quicker and working in a warm shop in winter always gets my vote.

Heat is done, although it might need some adjustments over the Winter.

I forgot my pictures on on the camera out in the garage, not my phone.

So now that I'm in the garage and eating lunch, I'll do an update.

I took off the 90° front outlet of the wood stove. I will be adding a Tee and a section of duct work going up through the attic.

attachment.php

Next up, a crappy picture but you get the gist of it. I had to cut the ceiling out of the way. What I found was a section of wire, that got moved, a Cat5e which could also be moved. Then there was a coax cable line, that got cut and pulled out. Had to trim back one of the ceiling joists.

Then I had to make my way into the attic, tallest spot about 3 1/2 feet tall. The path I had to cross was about 25 feet, which over the project, I made atleast 20 trips across this space, killing my knees.

To complicate the situation, I forgot about putting a blanket layer of fiberglass in this space, so all that had to be moved out of the way.

attachment.php

Another low light picture, that camera does terrible with low light.

I figured out where the duct was coming through the wall into the addition, drilled a 1" hole for reference. This opening included cutting away an exterior garage wall and the new wall of the addition. A serious pain.

Once back in the addition, I laid out the opening for a 4x10 duct opening and cut my nice new wall.

So once the hole was cut, it was a matter of connecting ductwork, taping joints, pulling fiberglass insulation on it and not trying to fall through the ceiling. . . . oh did a mention a tirade of cuss words ? My arm has a bruise, the should has scratch/scrape marks, my left hip is sore, I was coughing/hacking up **** (dirt/dust/fiberglass) until I went to sleep. My clothes got washed with a super long cycle 1hr 45 min to try to get the fiberglass out of them.

This is the result.. . . a dinky register opening in the wall.

attachment.php

Seriously, this is a good thing. Even though , this stage of the project was a PITA, it was worth it. Here's how the wood stove looks now. Granted the addition floor needs to get heated up like the rest of the garage and that will take a few days of burning wood. However, I moved the thermometer on that side and it showed 66° where the rest of the garage was 71°F.

do you have some plywood or even a 2x12 to crawl on or are you having to hit each 2by with each knee to get from one end to the other?

nice work!!

Hitting each 2x with each knee. Due to the angle and the location of the opening, getting a really long piece up there wasn't going to work. The worst thing is, I only need to get up there for some access stuff. If I were to build it out again, I did some work to that ceiling years ago, I'd add a walk plank or rat run for this reason.

The main attic I use for storage has a completely new floor in it, I detailed that years ago, which was also well worth it.

take some screws and some smallish pieces of plywood up with you next time and screw a few in and you'll have the start of a path you might need again. it won't get better on your knees as you get a bit older so thought i'd offer another way.

i'd love an attic, but sadly I own a flat roof cement block home.

cheers and have a great weekend

No pictures for today but I did finish nailing everything up with the framing nailer, which made quick work of a few nails.

Did a general cleanup and put a bunch of stuff away.

Caulked all the seams and a few nail holes.

Tomorrow will be finishing out the door way between the sides and trimming out the door frames.

Possibly priming the walls too. It's be nice to get two coats on so it could dry while I'm at work on Monday.

UPDATE on the heat. Working awesome.

Totally agree, I'm paying the price for years of "abusing" my knees when tabbing with heavy Bergens, over difficult terrain, in the military. Most of the cartilage is gone and bone on bone means painful knees and my consultant said I'll need knee replacements in the next 5 years.

Sorry to hear that your knees are that bad, I hope you can get them straightened out.

BTW, have you posted in the other thread in my Sig?

Shutting up shop earlier than I planned today. I wanted to have it primed but I want to enjoy the rest of the day and watch some TV or surf the 'net.

I did get the doorway finished and with it close to the O/H door, hard to get a decent picture or two.

This is what I started with, an opening where two walls met, met by a SWAG.

attachment.php

A closer shot

attachment.php

Since there was a gap between the wall and I had some sill seal left over, I put it to good use.

attachment.php

Then I covered that with left over 1/2" plywood from the walls.

Once the opening was done, I capped them with some 1x4s that I picked up the other day. That was until I should have measured twice. General rule, cut your long pieces first, check. All the verticals were up and I went to cut one top pieces to 38".

No problem, 38" long, done, put it up, 1/2" too short. Yep, not sure what I was looking at. Better check the back side, that's a little wider. I cut that one and put it up. I thought I have some more pieces of 1x4, so no problem....except they were all 36" or shorter.

What to do what to do. Being this side was the one with the replaced and patched OSB, it kinda look like **** and I should cover the entire area.

I broke out the tape measure and some more scrap plywood and came up with this patchwork.

attachment.php

attachment.php

It'll all get primed with the walls then painted too. I'm going to caulk after the paint is on. I want to get the edges all sealed with a coat of primer/paint before the caulk.

nutts: I sympathize with your 1/2 inch short cut!!

I know you won't use that new attic space much, but crawling over 2by's to get to the other end sounds painful at my age and something I wouldn't do. I have gone into an attic that had plywood or a 2x8+ and taken a couple big beach or bath towels and put them under my knees which helps a bit. did I mention I hate and don't use those knee cup style strap ons cause they cause me more pain than not using them.

I know you are young now, but sadly you won't be forever and you need to keep your knees (and body in general) happy.

take care and it's looking great!!

I'm not that young anymore, I'll be 52 this year and we have been here since 2000. I know I could easily do things back then and not feel them the next day or two.

Thanks, That's why I'm quitting early today. Enjoy life a little rather than work my *** off 5 days straight.

Picture taken with the phone, second coat getting rolled on. You can see the difference in the upper right hand corner.

attachment.php

Once again, like many other places in the garage, I'm using oil based Kilz primer and putting on two coats. I'm very happy with this stuff and have one complaint about it. The stuff just stinks and you need some ventilation when you use it. I just get it rolled on and leave the garage for the day while it dries.

I work tomorrow, so it can dry for a couple of days and I'll be painting the white on Friday. I'm going to paint all the walls, top to bottom then give the bottom a coat of gray. Once it's dry, the blue strip will go on to match the rest of the garage.

Keep moving like you do and you’ll tell younger longer is what I’ve heard and believe.

Nice work on the garage and it’s almost ready.

I'm pretty sure I can out work a few of the younger guys at the station. Looking at a few of the guys on our eligibility test for hiring this summer. I know I can out work some of those guys.

Some of my previous crews would ask why I parked so far away in the parking lot. My response was I didn’t want you complaining I outworked since you were tired from walking all the way from your car. As l looked at their cars parked at the back door.
