Well, I made a few phone calls today.

Liberty's Gears; About $1200 to fix my TKO and a new TKX is about $2800. They are about 12 weeks out to fix mine.

G-Force; they have some used pieces and possibly can fix mine or get me parts. I just need to know what gears are in mine. I can also take it up to the NMCA race in August and have one of the G-Force guys look at it as the shop owner will be there racing. I can either find out what I need or sell it back to them as parts. He said Leonard would cut me a check right there.

I also called a place about a item called a Clutch Tamer. Looks interesting and might save me more future breakage. Might be a wise investment for $179.

Sounds like you were busy today with the race car, hope you get back behind the wheel sooner rather then later, hate to see you sit all summer and not racing.

I was busy in the garage yesterday and at the firehouse today. Made a few phone calls during some down time.

Tomorrow is going to bring a small road trip.

I have a TKX on order for my cobra/godzilla combo, it sounds like a really good option and for the size is very strong compared to the old T-5. Time will tell and I really hope it works for me. Looks like you have yours sorted so looking forward to the story. What can you tell me about the clutch tamer?

Very interesting, thank you for the information. So what trans did you pick up?

JB
It's a Tremec TKX. Basically the next generation of transmission from them.

When I asked the guy at the Tremec trailer what the difference between my TKO600 and this new TKX was, he pointed to several upgrades. He said what was wrong with this transmission (TKO) they fixed with the TKX. If you get some place that has a cut away display, check out the differences between them.

Daughter came out to the house and we ordered pizza, which her dog decided to run in and play in the creek while they picked up the pizza. If you didn't see the Yellow Lab turned black thread, this is the same knucklehead.

So we eat pizza and she stayed longer than I thought, got nothing done in the garage. I hopped in the shower and was out like 10 minutes when we got paged in for mutual aid for the neighboring city. I could see the smoke from home about 12 miles as a crow flies.

That's out Ladder Tower on the left.

flick.jpeg

After being on scene for 15-20 minutes, they requested an engine & 3 personnel for manpower. So I went with two firefighters from the other shifts. Fortunately, we have some really good young firefighters, smart guys. By the time we made it back to the station, cleaned up, trucks back in service it was about 2am. Since today was my duty day, I rolled out of my bunk about 7:52, hopped in the shower and started a new day. Hopefully one the the young medic guys work tomorrow or I'll be here for the first 12 hours too. Sometimes it make for hard progress in or on the garage.

For the rest of the story about the fire.

I hate those types of fires. Water pressure, correct apparatus placement, Fire location.

How long will they department have to do fire watch? I’ve been involved in more than one that involved several days up to 2 weeks+. Maintaining one engine and one aerial ladder 24/7 until it’s completely out.

Good to hear about the TKX, I have one on order that should be here anytime, I liked everything I read about it and was surprised at how close it was dimensionally to the T-5 I currently have. That fire certainly looks like it could have been much worse had ya'll not gone to help.

They were on scene till about 1130 that morning. Not sure if they found a cause but the insurance company also sent in an investigator to work on it.

Big fire mean big water. Basically you have to offset and overcome the BTU's generated by the fire. We set up our Mercury nozzle and worked off a 2 1/2" line on the back side. We put a good hit on it that the two smaller 1 3/4" handlines couldn't do.

Here's a file photo of the nozzle. It's a ground monitor that can be left unmanned in conditions call for it.

We have similar to those we keep on had here at work for emergency situations (read either chemical release or hydrocarbon/fire), seeing one of them hooked up to a 5" hose really makes you wonder how close to the situation you want to be. In the unit I'm in we upgraded our 6 remote operated turrets to a different control system as well as installed 2,000 gpm nozzles. I've been close to a situation where we had 3 of them going at once and the ladder truck all watering down to one small area. Lots of runoff water gets created in a hurry. Sorry for the distraction, thought it a good time to share.

Stay safe,
JB

Side project for the station. I've modified a few of these over the years. They are sections of floor grating. The hack contractor that remodeled the station back in '88-89 did some shoddy work. All the grates are the same size, but they couldn't form up the pour for the floor and make these fit correctly.

This one fits under the rear of the Ladder Tower and not normally walked on or over. However, we are having an open house this weekend and it will be open to the public. I thought I took a picture of the finished project. I added some 1/2" bolts to the sides to widen the grate. Why bolts ? Cheaper than steel rod or rebar. Just has to be wide enough to bridge the gap.

I'll get another picture of it in place Saturday during the open house.

So today, I pulled the headers off the Mustang for a little modification.KIMG1061.JPG

I'll be removing the O2 sensor bungs. I had plugs in them but they actually create enough interference when installing and removing the bellhousing.KIMG1062.JPG

So I made a small cutting template with cardboard. I hammered the edge to mark where it needed cut.KIMG1063.JPG

Then using my plasma cutter, cut out the square. KIMG1064.JPG

Then cut a future patch from some exhaust tubing. After so more fitting, grinding, it'll get welded in place.KIMG1065.JPG

Got back on the headers today. Trimmed up the patches and tacked them in place. Once in place, I proceeded to weld them completely.

Once that was done, I ground down the welds with a flapdisc. Then I checked with a flashlight for any pin holes. The first header needed a little touch up.KIMG1136.JPG
Both headers done and ready to be put back on.

If you're wondering, no they won't be getting painted. This is like the fourth time I have welded on these header in the last dozen or so years. They are MAC headers with the HTC coating. Originally, tubes 3 & 4 were slip fit and used clamps. The first weld job was to permanently attach the tubes.
You can see where the slip fit was on #4 by the rust line.
KIMG1138.JPG

Then I decided I didn't like the way the tubes were welded in to the head flanges. They were welded on the inside, creating some restrictions. I ground down those welds and rewelded the tubes to the flanges on the outside.

The third time the welder was taken to the set of headers was repairing a last minute thrash to get it back together.KIMG1139.JPG
Above you can see the patch on #8 header tube. In order to get the header to clear the T shaped oil pan, we had to beat the tube in. It wasn't a proud moment for me, but to go racing, it had to be done.

It killed me enough that I pulled the motor out later, cut off one of the wings off the oil pan. I welded a new pan wall in and painted it. To this day, the pan doesn't leak and it still impresses me.

The tube had a section cut out and I bought an exhaust J-tube. I cut out a matching patch from the J-tube and welded it back in.

That's 3 and R&R the O2 bungs made number 4. These headers still fit, don't leak and have plenty of life left in them. I've got to hand it to MAC, they built a good set of headers.

I did get the pass side header on last night after I posted the above. KIMG1152.JPG

After supper, I checked to make sure both tail lights were working. I was told that one wasn't working. Then pulled the ignition release out...or whatever you call the doggone thing. That thing under the steering wheel (on Fords) that you have to push in to turn the ignition switch all the way back.

So I got all the drawer liner in. I also cut down some socket rails for a better fit.KIMG1180.JPG

I went outside to mow and then when I put the John Deere away, I decided to finish something else off the list.KIMG1181.JPG

So we have another project going on. If you remember last fall, before I got started on my addition, my parents put up a new building, 24x32. I was under the impression, after it was built, that they were going to tear down the little 10x12 shed. While going out to eat with them last week, my step-dad asked me if I would be interested in siding his little shed. I told him yes, as we had saved some some of the extra metal siding from the other build.

I stopped by and looked at the shed. he was gone but Mom was there. Whoa, that shed is in worse condition than I remember. It needs all new sheathing, walls and roof. It's rotted through after 40 years. I advised them the best thought, if it were mine would be to tear it down and start over.

So the game plan, is to build them a new shed. It's going on the old foundation which is RR ties with the center filled with stone. I came up with a basic drawing, a materials list and got their approval. I made a trip to Menard's today. Here's a start for all the framing.

2x4 walls and 2x6 rafters. In the box is a roll up door. I've never installed one so it'll be time to learn.

KIMG1187.JPG

10 and 12 footers for the bottom, top and double top plates. I started laying out for the studs on the long walls. I will be building the walls at my place, load them into the dump trailer to haul them over and set them up. It'll be 10' wide with a 6x7 roll up door. 12' deep with vinyl siding and metal roof over 1/2" OSB. Due to this sitting at the edge of the woods, I want the extra strength of the OSB under the metal siding with falling tree limbs.
