Hi Eric,

I've been slowly working my way through your thread from the start. I've been waiting to chime in until I caught up, which I've just done.

In a funny coincidence, I happened to read this post...

I was right, this is taking alot of tape. I killed one roll but was prepared for that. I bought a few rolls when I bought the lumber. I had all the checkers marked out and a two rows of tape around the edges, I got ready to paint. I thought about it for a second and decided to mask off the center before getting a drop of paint where I didn't want it.

I used some blue painters tape which was getting old. It didn't want to stick too good so I knew it would be good to use it up. Then I painted the black checkers and the edges.
03122013sophieworktable006-1.jpg

Today, I will mask over the black and paint the white. I know it sounds bassackwards but the black is oil based and the white will be latex. I'm not sure how well the oil based would stick to the latex if I made a mistake while painting.

The last top, I put a coat of varnish, not sure what (don't remember) though and it turned the white yellowish. Hopefully it won't happen again. :dunno:

At about the same time I watched this...

Not sure if you've seen Project Binky, but it's worth a watch. They masked up a checkerboard on the roof, just like your workbench, so they've got good taste.

Great work on the shed too, it looks great!

Haven't watched project Binky in over a year. It got too street car for me when I thought the original design was a Rally car.

Wasn't bad actually. Never done one until this one. Next time, it'd be a piece of cake.

Working on a small project in the garage lately. Daughter and her fiancee bought a new microwave for over the range top.

This microwave is taller than the old one and the overhead cabinet is 18". It'd virtually make it extremely hard to use the back burners.

So started to build a new shorter cabinet.KIMG1361.JPG

I'm going to try to get some matching stain today. Then I will start on the doors.

Eric, I think a lot of kitchens were designed for nothing more than a hood over the stove. Our kitchen came that way but luckily the cabinet over our stove is only 15" tall. I just replaced the 2.0 cubic foot microwave with a 2.1 cubic foot one and it's taller by 1/2" so I had to cut the backsplash tiles. When this micowave dies I have to find another one with the same dimensions because making the tile grow isn't an option.

Yeah I agree Bob. This house was built in the 50-60's before microwaves were around. It has a range top and small in the wall oven.

Their new microwave is about 2" taller than the other one.

Took a look at the to-do list and checked the weather. Time to get a few things done to the dump trailer.

First up, removing the tongue jack. It was rusty and I guess poor prep. Sanded with roloc disc, wire brush and wiped clean. Hit it wit primer and then some Rust-Oleum implement paint.
KIMG1370.JPG

The primer was a slight issue. I had some but bought another can, just in case. Ill be returning it. Check out the difference in the labels.KIMG1369.JPG

Then I moved to the tongue box. Again poor paint quality and not impressed with it. The lid was starting to rust so it got wire brushed and coated with some bedliner.KIMG1371.JPG

Move to the inside of the bed, 5 tie downs are factory. One at each corner and 5th front middle. Fine and dandy for tying down equipment. However, lumber, not so much.KIMG1372.JPG

It's a 14' bed, so halfway I'm adding a set. This should help with 8' lumber or sheet goods. I backed up to the addition and brought over the welder. Things like this is why I added an outlet by the door.KIMG1373.JPG

Welded in, primed and painted. Ready to use at some point.KIMG1374.JPG

Only real issue, I thought the back of my hand was getting hot from the radiant heat. Nope, it was a big welding berry burning through the back of the glove.KIMG1375.JPG

wonder why it says gloss and not primer? The part numbers are the same and even says Gray Primer on both can. weird.
Weird is right. There was a single can marked like the older can I had. When I took the new one back this morning, I grabbed that one.

I'd like to think someone in the label shop screwed up.

I started to trim paint around the overhead door. I broke out that odorless Zinser primer. Its supposed to be oil based but ran like water. I guess I will be getting another can of Kilz.

Someone just had a thread about using earplugs when welding since he dropped a nugget in his ear. He said he usually wears earplugs except just this one time.

How old is that can of Zisner’s? Could it have been frozen At some Time? Prior to your purchase?

Sometimes it’s just easier to get an extra can instead of trying to match

I've had horrible luck with Zinser oil base primer. Used it on the shop and the Duck Haus. Primed both of them with Zinser and they peeled like bananas. Used Dutch Boy over the top of both. The Dutch boy doesn't stick to the Zinser, and the Zinser doesn't stick to the wood.

I believe I used it around the door between the garage and addition. However, I don't remember if being this "thin" or watery.

I did something yesterday that I have been putting off for a while now. A month ago or so, I power washed the posts for the front overhang. So I needed to get a coat of stain on them and drug out the leftover gallon can from the porches on the house.KIMG1386.JPG

KIMG1387.JPG

I think I might put a second coat on them in a day or two.

I need to get a silicone ring. This gold one won't come off in the summer. Unfortunately, taking it off isn't always possible.

I wouldn't hesitate to cut it off if need be, just a trip into the fire station.

So I mentioned prior to stand by for a future project. That project started yesterday, of course, after a trip to Menards. I had a box of coil stock that I used at my parents but it was too light of a gray. I needed a box of charcoal gray. So now I have a box KIMG1420.JPG

KIMG1421.JPG
I cut a piece 10' long as my brake is 10'6" in length. Then I cut a few strips out of it and tried to bend one up.

This is my work area, the sill and lower wall. I'll be adding metal ribbed siding as wainscoting since I am doing all my metal fabrication on this side.KIMG1422.JPG

First piece in as a test. I have the correct metal screws but I'm going to use stainless steel pan heads so they don't stick out as much.KIMG1423.JPG

As normal, I got sidetracked today. Switched gears a little bit. The three pieces I had bent up, I installed. Since it was a nice day, I opened the overhead door and realized, I should get the area around the door painted. So I got a coat of white on what I primed the other day.

Since I was painting, heck why not. KIMG1427.JPG
These are two pieces left over from the shed at my parents. They are perfect size for the shelves on the pallet racking. Two coats of Kilz oil based primer and they will get painted white tomorrow.

This creates another problem, blocking the ceiling light once the shelf is installed. So I dug around and found this furnace whip that a friend gave me.

KIMG1429.JPG

Swapped a couple of wires around to make it a switched outlet. I have a single LED fluorescent style light to mount underneath.

I didn't spend any time in the garage the last fee days as it was too nice outside. I went to my parents with the JD, dump trailer and chainsaw. I started to collect firewood and work on draining the swamp again.

I'll snap a picture of the wood I have brought home so far but it needs split yet. Since its raining today, it's going to be back in the garage.

Yesterday, I did get the cabinet in that I built, shown above.

Old cabinet coming out.
KIMG1433.JPG

New cabinet in place with microwave hung up. I still have to make the doors and filler panels but they can use their new microwave.42009.jpeg
