What's your plan with the engine?

Educate me some on the motor cause I'm not really knowledgeable in mustang engine setups through out those years, what makes this motor perform better then the other engines of that year?

DOHC 32 valve 5.0L much stronger than the SOHC and much more power can be made. Now what is it going in?

JB
4.6 not 5.0 engine.

Keep in mind the older 5.0 was a pushrod 302, just an upgraded firing order and balance.

It was replaced by the modular family, 4.6 with 281 cu in . The 4.6 came in different versions, 2V, 3V and 4V.

This engine is basically first generation 4.6 four valve with dual OHC per head. It kicked out 305 HP at a time coming from the 5.0 making 225 hp.

The modern 5.0 is not the same as the old push rod engine. It's been nicknamed Coyote and makes around 400 stock.

My how times have changed.

I knew better than to say 5.0, I remember when they came out and was disappointed they lowered the displacement to 4.6 thinking it was just too small to make any real power. Those were the rage of cars when I was in high school, just a few years old and prime for a high schooler to afford, just a set of headers and muffler and they sounded really amazing. Then when the 2003/04 Terminator Cobra was released, OMG 390 HP, we thought that was then end all be all of Mustang power potential. I'm glad we were wrong.

I'm familiar with the Coyote, and knew the 4.6 was overhead cam, but I didn't know if the "cobra" mustang used the 4.6L or was it some other special motor.

Between the coyote, LS, and Hemi motors, they have all been putting out some wild numbers while still being street friendly. Makes me think, why do i keep the old 350 chevy motor in the camaro.

Yes I know what you mean. I have a 347 in my '86 GT. I have had the thought of going coyote but I'll just stick with my stock block grenade.

Did you mention where the Mod motor is going? Are you replacing the engine in your Mustang or is this a new project?

Not in my Mustang. It's going in a future project, probably a "pre-retirement/retirement" project.

There was a thread in Free Parking where I alluded to it. It'll be in a different Cobra, just a snake of another "flavor."

Well I looked and couldn't find it easy enough so I'll just ask, are you building a cobra replica? It'd be cool if you did. :)

I like the sound of that, what manufacturer are you planning to go with? I obviously have a bit of a vested interest in them, hard to believe I've had mine for over 12 years now.

I thought I had a few pics and posts about working on my '86 GT. Racing season never started for me this year. I just need to get it back together and in the trailer before winter storage.

I had a fuel pump issue as I let it set empty for months when I replaced the fuel lines. This caused the gears in the pump to rust enough to be seized up.

I blasted them polished them and put it back together.

Of course, not in the right order as I spent that weekend at work. So it got put together in the correct order.

KIMG0097.JPG

Currently, it's all reassembled, installed and working.

On to the next little project. A aluminum diamond plate panel for our Local's 1949 fire engine. The center piece is for a IAFF Maltese cross. It's going to need a little bit of polishing or brush work for the scratches.

I tried to polish some scratches out of it but couldn't get the right finish as the diamond marks came back. I used 90° angle grinder and some scotch Brite rolocs .KIMG0104.JPG

Then hitting it with some 320 and DA. Nope, didn't care for it. So I tried a 3" roloc in the drill press.
KIMG0105.JPG

This is how it turned out.

Factory Five is a great choice, there are so many already built out there any situation you run into you can find answers and better ways to do things. I almost wish I'd have gotten one from them, but wouldn't have been able to drive it for years vs buying one "done" then rebuilding it little by little over the last 9 years or so.

I'm in way worried about "playing it off as original." Unless I was to win the Powerball, there's no way I could ever think about purchasing the real thing. Going with a Factory Five allows me use what I already know, foxbody mustang/SN-95.

Finding this '96 Cobra, allowed me to also buy something that I always wanted, a Mustang Cobra. So what I'm doing is basically combining two things on my bucket list into one. Adding a third thing on the bucket list would be a supercharger. . . . . all dreams for the future.

Factory Five Cobra would be a dream car of mine! Awesome if you decide to go that route! They really seem to offer a good well thought out kit.

Hey Eric, how is the pocket spare tire holder working out? My car trailer doesn't have a spare tire holder as the previous one got ripped off a long time ago. Only concern is loosing the pocket for tie down point, but it can be removed so I guess it's not a major issue. Is the spare tire mount tight in the pocket to keep it from clunking around in the pocket?

It's for a buddy's trailer, the trailer I used for the road trip to Tennessee to pick up the donor car. I test fit the bottom section in the pocket before welding the top section on it. It fit tight then so I was fine with it. If it has an issue with clunking, a ratchet strap could be put on it to snug it up.

My buddy's trailer is a metal deck trailer and has tie downs welded to the deck surface. This mount doesn't affect securing the vehicle. He was talking about buying another locking hitch pin to prevent someone from walking off with it out of the stake pocket.

In all honesty, if you have a welder and some skill, you could add an extra stake pocket anywhere on the trailer for a mount like this.

I started with centering one tab on the rear end. Once it was where I wanted, I welded both sides of the tab.

DSCN0035.JPG

Once the top tab was on, I used a bolt with a stack of washers to locate the second tab.
DSCN0036.JPG
I did each side in the same manner and moved from one side doing one tab as to not forget anything.
DSCN0037.JPG
Well I screwed the pooch on this one. Totally not going to work as I started to put the rear end back in the car.

Old brackets cut off. Having a plasma cutter sure is nice.

KIMG0118.JPG

I went back over the tabs and cut as close as I could. I was trying not to burn a hole in the axle tube. Then out came the grinder.

After the grinder was close enough, some finish work with die grinder and roloc sanding disc. Hopefully, the new spot I ground down will be okay.

KIMG0121.JPG
Cleaned up, primed and painted. New tabs are on order from Summit as are tube ends. I'm going to have to cut one end down and weld in some new ends. Hopefully, I cut the "right" end off and not the "left" end.

New tabs showed up today after ordering them from Summit Racing last night, less than 24 hours. They will go on tomorrow if all goes according to plan.KIMG0133.JPG

Since I was trying to change the shocks on my truck today and make room in the garage to do it, I jacked up the donor Cobra. I figured I would sit up on some HF movers dollies and slide it back. While I had the front end up in the air, I decided to take the wheel spacers off this thing.

KIMG0130.JPG

The lugs holding the wheels on came off easily and then the wheel. That's when I noticed the lugs holding the spacers on, 3 different ones. Good grief.

So I tried to put the wheel on the rotor, nope. These aren't spacers, they're adapters. Holy milk cows. Did I mention this was a drug seizure vehicle ? Yeah drugs are bad for your brain. Adapter back on, wheel back on. Project for another day.

KIMG0131.JPG

I did get the front shocks and steering stabilizer changed on my truck, in the house garage. Add the back shocks to the to-do list tomorrow along with the tabs getting welded on.
