Did the early Saturday morning Bagel run and stopped by a local garage sale. It's a 1982 Honda XR 80 that was covered in dust and was sitting for at least 20 years. Practically brand new after a good clean... Here is the best part. $100...I'm not really a motorcycle guy but am looking forward to getting it running and and having alittle fun...definitely my score of the season...;) BTW,

If anyone knows how to get this thing started I can use all the help that is offered..I know nothing about these things

I had my childhood Honda XL75 still at my parents' place. The neighbor got it up and running for my neices and nephews last summer so they could ride it.

Nice catch!

You need three things for the motor to run... Oxygen, Fuel, Spark... Without one, you got nothing.

Spark can be a bad plug, wire, kill switch, etc.

Fuel and Air is pretty easy

Ok....since you're not going to sell that worthless, non-running POS to me.....

It needs the pilot jet cleaned. Remove the carb, take off the float bowl, and clean things out. The pilot jet is the small (about 3/16" diameter, 1" long) jet that you remove with a straightslot. Remove it, blow it out with compressed air, or better yet use a piece of wire off a wire brush to clean it right. If the bowl is really mucked up, clean everything, including the main jet (hex head right in the center).

Like the others said, fresh oil, fresh gas, clean/re-oil the air filter, and that thing should be good to go. About the only thing that could throw a wrench in the deal is if the tank has rust and needs to be really cleaned well.

And yes, you ****, big time......

I started the tear down and there was rust in the tank. I removed it, cleaned it out the best I could and poured a rust remover I bought at HF in it. It looks like the tank is cleaning out well. What weight oil do I use in it?

I started the tear down and there was rust in the tank. I removed it, cleaned it out the best I could and poured a rust remover I bought at HF in it. It looks like the tank is cleaning out well. What weight oil do I use in it?

If there is still rust in the tank, take some bolt washers rocks but them in there along with some solvent and swish it around, it will help break up the flakes of rust etc.

I bought a 78 KE250 a while back that some one left gas in it for how ever many years, i did not put a liner in the tank i just replaced the fuel filter when it get dirty.

take the carb off and dissamble it soak it in solvent overnite

I put a zillion miles on one of those in the day. Those things are bullet proof. Use any 10-40 motorcycle oil, not the "energy conserving" car oil. Wally World should have some in the motorcycle part of the automotive aisle. Be careful if you use a wire(VERY SMALL) to clean the jets, easily damaged. Good old spray carb clean will do just fine. Put a cheap in line fuel filter on it too. Worth the coupla bucks.

EDIT: and BTW...You **** ;-p

That is my real passion...Its a 68 Satellite that is far removed from the grocery getter I bought a few years ago..Looking for high 11s this summer...No not for sale..

Just saw your username, got it.

Building a 408 for my 69 Dart. Looking to run 11.20s and have it be a an almost daily driver from May to October.

An inline fuel filter will be very wise with the tank being rusted. I've rarely had to soak the carb. What condition was the float bowl/float in?? If the low speed jet is really varnished up, spraying it isn't going to cut it. If you're careful with the wire, you aren't going to hurt the jet....

What did the air filter look like?? That's a good indicator of how it was taken care of.

You don't want to sell it to me for $500, eh?? It'll save you all this work you're having to do!! elohel....

Well, the suckage points are high on this one for sure! I think we need to establish a new phrase other than "You ****" for situations that go far above and beyond the you **** range. Any ideas?

I have restored lots of old bikes and if you can find someone with a ultrasonic cleaner have the carb cleaned by them. The main issue is the pilot jet, they are just such a small opening that they clod VERY easily. If your not going to ultrasonic clean the carb then go buy a new pilot jet for $5.00. Check out the carb boots for cracks as they get very brittle in 30 years.

Nuts in the tank with some WD-40 works great and put in a inline filter like the Dr. suggested.

BTW I would take the $500.00 from DR. and run. LOL

thanks. I used carb cleaner and blew outb all the ports. It seems to be fine and looks practically brand new but I will have to see once I have it back together. I will probably need some advise on how to get to the pilot jet since I have no idea where it is. I am going to re-paint the exhaust and put her back together this weekend. I'll post a few pics when she is done.

Any suggestions on what to use to polish the rims? They look like thay have alot of life in them but there is some oxidation... TX

Do you have the carb off already? See my post above on where the pilot jet is located.

This isn't an XR80, but it's very similar....this is with the carb bowl removed and the carb upside down:

Rims are chromed steel....try some chrome polish, of if they're rusted, some really fine steel wool.

Clean that pilot jet and go ride that thing!!

my way of cleaning the tank was small very small rock like from a fish tank a little wd 40 then sealed it up so no leaks then wrapping it up in a lot of blankets and stuff it in the dryer with no heat (and the s.o. not home) turn it on and go have a few cold ones it will clean up real good.

clean the needle and seat and blow out all the holes with a bit of compressed air. you might have to let the jets soak for a bit. if you use compressed air on the jets then hold them tight and make sure you can see through them and the hole is round

20W-50, and best if formulated for m/c (aircooled) engines. (Ex Honda MC dealer/ factory trained mech here.)

Got it running and sold it to my garage for$500in shop credit. Building a 56 desoto hemi and need the resources...
