garage storage system with sliding doors

I'm in the market for a garage storage system in one car garage. We have received estimates from a couple of companies, but I'm looking for new ideas. Ideally, we would like to utilize about 130 to 150 inches of width (against drywall) and about 80 to 85 in Height and maybe 17-24 inches (depending upon availability of sliding doors) in depth. I have looked at New Age and a couple of other companies (websites only - just starting this search) I have found on this forum. Because things are so tight in the garage, we would perhaps like sliding doors if these are available. DIY is out of the question for me, but we do have a handyman who could undertake assembly. Thank you in advance for your help.

Parents of a friend of mine bought some sort of modular closet system from Ikea many years ago for garage storage. They have sliding doors and I believe are around the height you mentioned. They are retired now but moved a lot for their career and as I understand it these survived a few of those moves.

I don't know if they're still made but worth looking.

Around 25 years ago I helped a guy removed a bunch of sliding hollow core doors from his basement and used them to make garage storage. Took some DIY skill but was certainly an easy project. I'm sure your handyman could handle it.

You might explore using business-type sliding door cabinets. When my employer was replacing its cabinets, I bought a few for about $15 each. Large sliding doors, and about 18 inches deep. I have a couple stacked on top of each other, so you might be able to reach your overall desired height too. Next step for me is to paint them red or blue- the corporate beige is so dull!

If you post your actual location instead of what you did, below your screen name, it helps people offering advice to know if there is a vendor close to you, or other helpful advice.

I'd use Whirlpool/Gladiator brand shelving, it assembles w/no tools, and then if you want sliding doors, install some-type of perimeter frame/closet-sliding door track, and get some hollow doors, and install 'em to the track. None of that should be very expensive. The Gladiator shelving is available in a number of sizes, by depth and length. The height overall is about 72" for the one I posted, check for the others. Just run your stiles taller, and span the distance you need with a rail wide-enough to provide space for the doors you choose. You could even make some doors from plywood, framed with 2x2's, or something similar.

4-Tier Welded Steel Garage Storage Shelving Unit (77 in. W x 72 in. H x 24 in. D)

Home Depot $229

You could store engine blocks on each shelf, if you wanted: 8,000 lbs capacity, weight distributed. I have 5 or 6 of these, and I am very-happy with them, and I do store heavy things like engine parts on them.

One tip, cut a piece of plywood or masonite to fit inside the rails, on-top of the wire shelves, it will be much easier to remove & replace things on them. You don't need anything thick, like 3/4" plywood, you're not having it be the sole-support of the weight, the welded-wire mesh does that. You're providing a smooth surface to allow goods to slide-across the surface is all.

Two of the above units would be 156" W and you can get shorter ones. Proof of their utility (attach.)

Be aware there are different manufacturers/vendors of these types of racks, they are not "all the same!" Some have metal shelving, and those are rated at significantly lower load ratings. The stiles and shelf rails are lighter gauge metal. There are fewer load-bearing cross-members, some have only one, instead of two, going front-to-back, below the welded wire shelf inlay.

Northern Tool sells something similar (Ironton). There are other sellers (Whalen). Costco sells them sometimes, but you have to catch them when they have them. You also want to check the specs, as the things I warned-about (differing weight limits, thinner steel members, number of supports for the welded-wire shelf inserts) may-be the case.

I just checked the Costco website, they have the Whalen two-shelf support, 2,000 lb/shelf, 77" W X 24" D X 72" H units for the same price as Home Depot is offering for the Gladiator, but you have to buy two to get that price, and it's a delivery item, I'm assuming it's 'delivery to the store, pick-up there,' all things to check-out.

https://www.costco.com/whalen-industrial-rack,-77”--x-24”--x-72”.product.100178373.html

You don't want to pay freight on these, that will probably add about 1/3 to the cost of the per-unit price.

What a great idea to have sliding doors for garage cabinets -- not sure why there aren't a ton of options that have that since it works much better for areas like on the side of where the cars are parked.

Sadly, I don't know of any options, but subscribed to thread to see what options pop up. I've standardized on Gladiator cabinets throughout the garage and am very happy with them, but they don't have any sliding door options that I am aware of.

I once considered something like this, but decided I didn't really-need it.

Roll-up bamboo shade 36" W X 72" H for $56 (a 48" W X 72" H is $78):

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Orienta...fj-1k_aa4YbnrfgLhGBoCmFYQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Relatively inexpensive, easy to hang, and you can size the width to the width of the shelves you use. Below is a 72" W X 72" H one, for $113:

Put-up a header to hang it from, and it's 72" wide, so it closely-fits the open area in the Gladiator 77" W X 72" H shelving unit, between the end stiles. If I knew your location, I could even give you a 'tax-included' price. At 7% tax, it would be an out the door price very-close to $713, to provide Gladiator shelving for an area 154" W X 72" H and your 'cover the shelves' roll-up pieces, not-including the wood you use for a header from-which to hang it, and if you decide to use side stiles, to 'capture' the sides of the bamboo roll-up. Think of it as a narrow-slat tambour door.

Great thread, I hope you get some good suggestions - but don't hold your breath :(

I have a very small garage so it would be really nice to use sliding rather than swinging doors. I've done a decent amount of searching and haven't found much commercially available.
  • There's that family handyman setup. And in general you can just take that concept and customize it. This may be the route I take and just design my own custom setup.
  • As mentioned Ikea closet doors are an option. I think some older styles are discontinued but I believe they still have other options. Last time I checked they weren't as cheap as I'd expect.
  • I've seen a handful of soffit cabinets with sliding doors that just use tracks rather than any kind of rollers or hardware.

Thanks to Leonard Y, Colin Len, and Lynden for their extraordinarily helpful posts. I sent the excellent DIY link posted by Lynden to our handyman.

You are welcome. I actually haven't looked at my thread in a while. didn't realize there aren't any construction photos. Here a couple of the tracks.

I bought the tracks from Outwater but the shipping was expensive.

The sales woman was really nice and had them cut to 6 feet so it didn't require a freight truck.

Good luck.
